[cobirds] Gilpin winnings

2021-09-14 Thread David Suddjian
DFO visited Gilpin County yesterday 9/13 to see what we could find. A few
species were good for Gilpin as per eBird. At the cemeteries along Upper
Apex Road west of Central City we saw a Western Kingbird (only Sept Gilpin
occurrence in eBird), and a Sage Thrasher (only three prior eBird records,
all Aug-Sept), and at Central City Reservoir there was a female
Yellow-headed Blackbird (only one prior County record, form September). Fun
from a county perspective. Yes, I realize there are other records that may
not be in eBird, but it gives a good measure of what's up with these
species.

While at the cemeteries we witnessed a spectacle of migrants. Initially and
for a little while we encountered very few birds and it was pretty quiet.
Then all of a sudden - there were birds. The cemetery area just south of
Upper Apex Road had, as if from nowhere, hosted about 60 Mountain
Bluebirds, 75 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 25 White-crowned Sparrows, 4
Vesper Sparrows and a few others. They were coursing all over, and the
white-crowneds singing a fair amount. The yellow-rumpeds more or less
following the bluebirds, as they do. We strove for Gilpin weaterbirds and
wound up with Mallard, Great Blue Heron, Killdeer, and Spotted Sandpiper -
a Gilpin goldmine, as it goes up there.

Would you please clarify us about your segment/interview re Chico banding

The only conference I can find happened this past weekend, so I'm uncertain
as to what I should register for.

Thanks for your help. I hope to get out this week!

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/14/21

2021-09-14 Thread Nancy Ransom
What an exciting day! We caught two rarities today: a Nashville Warbler and
a Philadelphia Vireo. We also caught our first white-crowned sparrow the
season, and boy are they definitely royalty for a reason. Another slower
day with only 29 captures, but the variety made up for it for sure! Thank
you to volunteers Jacquie Evans and Eric Tokuyama for doing an awesome job
today!

Chico captures for 9/14:

Wilson's Warbler 14
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Nashville Warbler 1
Hammond's Flycatcher 1
Lazuli Bunting 1
Philadelphia Vireo 1
Blue Grosbeak 1
White-crowned Sparrow 1
Gray Catbird 2
Brown Thrasher 2
Ovenbird 1 (caught for the third day in a row)
Western Tanager 1
American Robin 1

We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually
returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about
11:30am, weather permitting. Thank you for your continued support!

[cobirds] Costa's Hummingbird in Bent County update

2021-09-14 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

The immature male Costa's Hummingbird in my yard in Las Animas since
9/10 is still present this afternoon. It's behavior today has been
different. It has spent a lot of time flycatching high in trees,
sometimes being out of sight for longer periods of time. I'm not sure
whether this indicates it is stocking up on calories before departing
for points unknown.

I will update cobirds tomorrow morning if the bird is still here.
Birders are still welcome.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Banding Update 9/10/21

2021-09-14 Thread Nancy Ransom
I thought I had already posted this, but I guess I exited it and didn't
save it as a draft woops! Today was pretty interesting, with no captures
our first round, but a surge of captures in our second round. A pleasant
surprise was a hatch-year Sharp-shinned Hawk, and all of our visitors got
to get a great look at the bird. We also captured our second Ovenbird of
the season! Today we had 42 captures, bringing our number up to 382 birds
for the season. It was extremely hot so we had to close early due to
temperature. Thank you to all the birders that came out today! And thank
you to Kara for being an awesome volunteer.

Captures for 9/10:
Wilson's Warbler 21
Orange-crowned Warbler 4
Hammond's Flycatcher 1
Chipping Sparrow 2
Lazuli Bunting 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 6
Ovenbird 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Gray Catbird 3
Sharp-shinned Hawk 1
Brown Thrasher 1

Also, I wanted to mention that I will be featured on the Western Bird
Banding Association's Virtual Conference that is happening tomorrow
morning, where I will be talking more about the net set-up here at Chico,
and there is also a banding demonstration. It will be featured at 0810 PST!

[cobirds] Chestnut-collared longspur, Chatfield sand spit, Douglas county.

2021-09-14 Thread Scott Somershoe
I had a Chestnut-collared fly by the sand spit about 11am. It was calling as it
flew by. Very distinct call. It was going south. I haven’t relocated it. A
couple other folks happened to be here and it hasn’t been refound. However, I’d
walk the weedy barren fields around the parking lot for the sand spit and all
around that area. If I recall, there was 1-2 CCLO here last year.

Also 5 immature Sabine’s gulls way out. I can’t make one into a little gull
though. No LT jaeger yet today.

CCLO was green big year bird #260.
