[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 4/24/22

2022-04-24 Thread Meredith McBurney
Started the morning with two striking adult males - a Ruby-crowned Kinglet
and a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - two typically early-arriving migrants coming
through right on schedule. Overall, a pretty standard early spring day,
with 13 new birds banded and two returns from prior years:

Black-capped Chickadee 1
House Wren 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, hybrid 1
Song Sparrow 2 new, 2 returns (1banded in 2018, 1 in 2021)
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 5

We are open 6 mornings per week, closed on Mondays. Registration is
required to visit on the weekends - there are three 1 hour sessions,
starting at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. Go here
to register. There are school groups
every week day, arriving about 9:30. Individuals may drop by early
mornings during the week although there are groups visiting early on some
days.

Observation start time: 07:30:00
Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8.5 hours

Official Counter:Carol Cwiklinski, Emma Riley

Observers:Carol Cwiklinski, Natalie Vande Vuss, Steve Small

Visitors:
Steve Small, Carol Cwiklinski, and Natalie Vande Vuss volunteered to
observe today. We also had a number of familiar faces stop by and bird for
an hour or two at a time today which was great! We had a total of 41
visitors at the ridge today.

Weather:
Cloud cover was heavy with precipitation seen in all directions for most of
the day. Winds were from the SE in the morning, shifting NE as the day went
on. Wind speeds stayed mild until a storm front from the W moved in at the
end of the day.

Raptor Observations:
Number of birds was still lower than we expected today but we had a great
diversity with 14 raptor species seen! We had two dark SW move early in the
morning. Birds moved close to the ridge and over the western ridge all day.
The NG we had today was distant, much like the other NG we have seen
recently. We're eagerly awaiting a close adult NG! We are also hoping for a
good SS push soon. Today marks the 2000th migrant of our season, a number
that hasn't been reached at Dinosaur Ridge since 2005. We are excited to
see what the end of the season has in store for us.

Non-raptor Observations:
Bird activity picked back up today after the last couple days with
highlights including Double-crested Cormorant (3), American White Pelican
(8), and Sandhill Crane (3). We also had multiple Broad-tailed Hummingbirds
today. White-throated Swifts were out in full force again today.

Predictions:
Partly cloudy with calm to moderate ENE winds. It will hopefully be a good
day!

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at
Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around
3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Max and Lainie Miller reported and photographed a Tennessee Warbler
yesterday at Barr Lake (Adams County). Several of us saw the bird high in
the trees at the main picnic area next to the Nature Center parking lot
this morning. Appreciate the birder who gave us a head's-up!

Hello John and others,

Yes, our April presentation will be available on Aiken Audubon's YouTube
channel, which can be found at the very top of the Events page of our
website: https://www.aikenaudubon.com/events/

Please be patient - our website guru is out of town for awhile.

On another note, were you affected by the recent MV fire? I was saddened to
hear of it.

[cobirds] Shorebirds in the Grass | Boulder Audubon Speaker Series

2022-04-24 Thread Sydney Rayl
*Shorebirds in the Grass*
Did you know that many familiar shore and wading birds don't nest by the
ocean at all? These "upland" shorebirds and waders lay their eggs in the
soft grasses of some of our most verdant prairies, or sometimes on bare
sand flanked by tufts of grass. Join us for the next Boulder Audubon
speaker series with Steve Jones, where we'll journey to the Nebraska
Sandhills to explore the lives of piping plovers, long-billed curlews,
marbled godwits, willets, upland sandpipers, black-necked stilts,
white-faced ibis and several more. Along the way, we will learn all about
why and how so many of these species are thriving in this oasis on the
western plains.

Steve Jones is author of* Nourishing Waters, Comforting Sky; The Last
Prairie; *and* Owls of Boulder County*. He is co-author of* The Shortgrass
Prairie, *the *Peterson Field Guide to the North American Prairie, Colorado
Nature Almanac,* *Wild Boulder County, *and* Butterflies of the Colorado
Front Range.* His consulting work includes more than three-dozen breeding
bird and resource inventories for city, county, and state open space and
wildlife programs. He has led field trips and taught nature classes for 40
years, and he taught in the Boulder Valley Public Schools for 33 years. Learn
more here!

*When*: Tuesday, April 26, 7:15 pm.
*Where*: Zoom link will be provided *here
* on the
day of the event. We encourage you to join a few minutes early to avoid any
technical issues.

We hope to see you there!

Re: [cobirds] Summer Tanager - Barr Lake- Adams CO

2022-04-24 Thread Evan Wilder
Almost certain we just refound this Summer Tanager. Just north of the banding
station this time, in a clump of trees near the path. A little south of the
bench.

It had a mostly red head (pale, not the brilliant red of adults), a thicker
bill than Western Tanager, darker wings and yellow below the wings. My wife
spotted it and we only got a quick glimpse at about 9:10 as it stood on some
higher branches. It then dived down to the foliage below and we haven’t
relocated it.
