[cobirds] Mottled Duck - Larimer

2022-05-03 Thread David Wade
Hello folks, I had the great luck today of finding a Mottled Duck in the
Cobb unit of Wellington SWA. It appeared to be paired up with a female
Mallard so hopefully, it will stick around for a little while. Josh B
fortunately got some photos. https://ebird.org/checklist/S108872804

I saw it on the northern most pond of the SWA. The closest access can be
found on off of Larimer Co Rd 58. There is also access from Larimer Co Rd 3.

Cheers,
David Wade

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Report, 5/3/22

2022-05-03 Thread Meredith McBurney
We had a slightly delayed and very slow opening this morning - it was
chilly and cloudy and the nets were frosty after yesterday's rain. Things
picked up a bit about 9:30, providing our first morning dominated by
warblers, including our FOS Redstart and Virginia's. Here's the breakdown
of the 20 new birds banded today:

House Wren 2
Virginia's Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 10
American Redstart 1
Wilson's Warbler 1
Spotted Towhee 1
White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 3

We are open 6 mornings per week, closed on Mondays. Registration is
required to visit on the weekends - there are three 1 hour sessions,
starting at 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30. Go here
to register. There are school groups
every week day, arriving about 9:30. Individuals may drop by early
mornings during the week although there are groups visiting early on some
days.

Observation start time: 08:15:00
Observation end time: 16:30:00
Total observation time: 8.25 hours

Official Counter:Carol Cwiklinski

Observers:Darcy Juday, Janet Peters

Visitors:
We had 12 visitors to the ridge today including two bird whisperers who
brought with them the only American kestrel of the count. Brenda Beatty
helped spot birds today. She enjoyed being back on the ridge.

Weather:
We arrived to fog and mist. Later the fog lifted but a thick haze remained
for the entire day. It was cool with steady winds. Excellent cloud cover
helped us find birds. Storms threatened late in the count but stayed west
of us.

Raptor Observations:
The raptor flight was slow but steady and birds flew remarkably low and
close to the ridge. We had excellent looks at many birds. Our last bird was
a beautiful immature peregrine falcon at eye level on the east.

Non-raptor Observations:
A small flock of migrating blue jays and barn swallows were present as well
as the usual. Lots of hummingbirds were seen and heard.

Predictions:
Stormy weather is possible tomorrow.

More site information at hawkcount.org:
https://hawkcount.org/siteinfo.php?rsite=123

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at
Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around
3 PM from March 1st to May 7th.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading
east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west
side of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left,
head through the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the
crest of the ridge. (Distance: 0.56 miles, Elevation gain: 259 feet)

[cobirds] Migration weather: 5/4

2022-05-03 Thread Bryan Guarente
After today’s north to northwest winds, we started coming back around to
southerlies that connect us once again to Mexico (Veracruz area), but this
time with less precipitation impeding the pathway from further south.

>From nightfall:
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/04/0200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.02,39.61,774/loc=-105.019,39.614

Through to sun-up tomorrow morning:
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/04/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.02,39.61,774/loc=-105.019,39.614
(Green circle is Littleton)

The pattern looks good for migrants to show up from Pueblo (coming from NM)
to Cheyenne (coming more from Veracruz). Keep your eyes peeled for new
birds to make their way to us and have most of the birds that are currently
here stick around.

Then there isn’t a good push of migrants possible until after the COBC. So
that means find the birds that are around now, learn where they are hanging
out, then take advantage of those birds in your big day plans.

May 7th 6am (COBC day at sun-up)
https://earth.nullschool.net/#2022/05/07/1200Z/wind/isobaric/850hPa/orthographic=-105.02,39.61,774/loc=-105.019,39.614

Enjoy tomorrow if you can get out. Keep me posted with any data points
whether you consider those data good or bad. All data is good data.

Thanks.

[cobirds] Higbee Valley Road (Otero County)

2022-05-03 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Four of us were on Higbee Valley Road in Otero County at 6:40 this morning,
high 30's with a breeze. At the cemetery there was a male Golden-winged
Warbler (coming back out at 1, we didn't re-find it). A bit farther down at
the first ranch where there's a bridge we saw a male Summer Tanager and
three White-winged Doves. Many Bullock's Orioles, Canyon Towhees,
Ash-throated Flycatchers, Eastern Phoebe, Lark Buntings, a real surprise
were three Pinyon Jays (I don't think eBird liked that too much), first of
year Black-headed Grosbeak, and a splendid Black-throated Sparrow made it a
very diverse species day.

Re: [cobirds] Pelican Mortality at Union Res (Boulder Co.) *CPW Update*

2022-05-03 Thread jay...@gmail.com
All:

Finally connected with CPW, wanted to pass along what I learned.
Unfortunately highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N1), or HPAI, is here
in CO and is widespread. Not really anything can be done about it, other
than monitoring and observing. CPW would like to hear about suspected
cases, their criteria is 3 dead birds of the same species within a two (2)
week window in the same area. They would like to analyze the bird, as long
as they can get it within 48 hrs and the bird has NOT been frozen. Contact
your local CPW District office if you notice anything.

I did get Clayton from CPW connected to the head ranger at Union, so those
two entities can connect more easily if any other birds are found. As a
small bonus for myself, I've gotten to know the ranger I first spoke to and
it turns out he lives one street over from me.

Here's a link to an Audobon article on HPAI:

[cobirds] Banding, CSR, El Paso Co, Tuesday

2022-05-03 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

The scene was decidedly Hitchcockian when I arrived at the Clear Spring Ranch
banding site this morning. Hundreds of mixed blackbirds, at eye-level, lined my
net lanes. But I wasn’t afraid, and managed to only have to extricate a dozen
RW Blackbirds throughout the morning - all females. After being flushed, they
moved back and forth to the hay stubble field, foraging, then flying in huge
numbers to the tops of the cottonwoods and willows, not moving off across the
creek until after 11:00. Mixed in with the 500+ RW Blackbirds were over 100 YH
Blackbirds, a couple dozen BH Cowbirds, 30 Com Grackles, and a couple
Great-tailed Grackles.

Also arriving in larger numbers and foraging in the hayfield today were
Mourning Doves (at least 50, most days I see 2-3), and a large sparrow flock at
sunrise - with 75+ Chipping Sparrows, and a few Lark, Savannah, Song, and
White-crowneds mixed in, including a FOY Mountain White-crowned. They kept me
busy, with 60 birds processed this morning (after 60 in 8 days before!)

Also seen:
4 FOY White-faced Ibis
FOY Red-breasted Nuthatch
FOY Bullock’s Oriole male
a pair of Swainson’s Hawks that seen interested n setting up shop in one of the
large cottonwoods

and banded:
FOY Yellow Warbler (spanking adult male)
FOY Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Second-year F)
2 Brown Thrashers (Ad, SY)
4 FOY Lark Sparrow
FOY Savannah Sparrow
FOY Mountain White-crowned Sparrow
2 FOY Spotted Towhee (F) - much later than usual

So things are finally looking like May!

Happy Migration
Steve Brown
