Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 16:30:00
Total observation time: 8.5 hours

Official Counter:Ajit Antony

Observers:Andrew Jensen, Kathie Moses, Liza Antony, Steve Small

Visitors:
A birding couple from Winter Park looking after their grandchildren in
Conifer had heard of the hawk watch and came up for a few hours.
A running club of 10 members from Golden ranging from 8-14 years with their
leader.

Weather:
Good cloud cover intermittently, winds mainly from the ESE, good visibility
with some haziness. For specific hourly weather data go to Hawkcount.org.

Raptor Observations:
The 1st migrant was the CH at 8:38 AM MST which was the only real close
bird just east of the watch. A few of the Osprey came low enough to be
visible with the naked eye – good binocular looks.
We had 32 BW today and according to Steve the highest this watch has ever
had in a day is 35.
Non-migrant raptors: Golden Eagle 5 all flying West, RT 1-3, TV 3, AK
flying east.

Non-raptor Observations:
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's) 1, Western Meadowlark heard, White
Pelican 15, Say's Phoebe 2, Spotted Towhee 1, White-throated Swift, Barn
Swallow, Violet-green Swallow, Tree Swallow, Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay 3,
Mourning Dove 4, Northern Flicker heard, Common Raven 3, Great Blue Heron
1.
Kathie Moses had never seen a BW and wanted to see one and after a while
wanted to find a hawk before Steve did – she was able to combine both
ambitions in one bird!
Thanks to Andrew for helping and aging the GE with his scope, and a
heartfelt thanks to Steve for finding and IDing most of the raptors,
without whom we would have had a meager count indeed.

Predictions:
The forecast is for rain at 44% risk after 9 AM MDT, 72% after 12 noon and
82% chance of rain after 3 PM with a chance of thunder after 12 noon –
with winds from the N>NNE – so the count could be ended early.

Osprey, Peregrine Falcons, Prairie Falcons, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned

uncommon but also counted each season. Non-raptor species include Rock

American White Pelican, and Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are
always welcome. The hawk watch at Dinosaur Ridge is staffed

[cobirds] Solitary Sandpiper and White-faced Ibis - Belmar, Jeffco

2023-04-24 Thread Chip Clouse
Cobirders,
I really should come to Belmar Park in Lakewood more often, especially now
that I moved 9 minutes north. Great for birding while walking my Maybelle
too.
Anyway, tree-lined pond to NW had the Ibis and the Sandpiper was in the
main pond of the WSW peninsula. Usual suspects also around to the tune of
28 spp. so far. More trail to walk...

Good Birding,

Chip Clouse

It will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Urling and I donated 175 books from our nature library -- surely one or two
will appeal to you.

[cobirds] Parula /yellow throated warbler, Boulder

2023-04-24 Thread 'Deborah Carstensen' via Colorado Birds
I went to the area described by Nathan and others on the Boulder Creek just
east of 17th St. With some time and persistence and luck I saw the northern
Parula and the yellow throated warbler, both with really excellent views
people. People also noted how many other birds are in that area and it’s true,
it’s just filled with a fun variety of birds. I was joined by Edie and Susan
for part of the time and it was fun to have extra eyes.

[cobirds] Denver Field Ornithologists monthly program tonight at 7 PM!

2023-04-24 Thread Sharon
DFO presents "Birdsong and Habitats: updates from DFO-funded avian
research" via Zoom webinar Monday, April 24 at 7 PM. Register here:
https://dfobirds.org/Programs.aspx
You will receive a link to the Zoom webinar.

Two researchers will share their work. Leah Crenshaw is a grasslands
researcher and master's student at the University of Northern Colorado. She
is analyzing grassland birdsong to determine the effect of the build
environment on breeding success.

Olivia Taylor is a student researcher at the University of Colorado
Boulder. Her work measures the effects of geographic isolation on
differences in song between populations of Black-capped Chickadees as a
means to understand how isolation influences birdsong evolution.

As always, this program is free and open to all. This is the last Zoom
webinar of DFO's annual cycle. Programs will resume in August.
