[cobirds] Fall Count

2023-09-16 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Our 44th annual Fall Count recorded 10,823 birds of 162 species. Count of
individuals lower than average, species count up 7 from average. We had 3 new
species: Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Common Tern, and Dickcissel.    Say's Phoebes
have increased over the years, with the 66 seen last weekend far more than any
previous year. 17 Solitary Sandpipers, highes count by one. 506 Western Grebes,
which seems to have increased over the years.
Only one Franklin's Gull, lowest count except two years when we didn't
record any. Half the duck species dropped from average: Ruddy, Com. Merganser,
Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Wigeon, even Canada Goose. Redheads show a drastic
drop, which started in 2013: 11 this year, average 96. But 207 Shovelers, third
highest in 43 years, topped the average of 94.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/16/23

2023-09-16 Thread meredith
Just read through the reports from our other three stations for today -
What a wide variety of experiences we had today!

The ~24 hours of drizzle and the first almost cold morning seem to have
brought in some birds - we had only our second good day of the season. We
banded 50 new birds, which included two semi-rarities - A Philadelphia
Vireo and a Blackpoll Warbler. Coincidentally, the last Blackpoll was
caught on 9/17/17 - almost exactly six years ago in another year when the
lake water early in the season was really high.

Here's the breakdown of the 50 new birds:

Philadelphia Vireo 1
Rock Wren 1
House Wren 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 9
Blackpoll Warbler 1
Yellow Warbler 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 31
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Clay-colored Sparrow 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 1

If you would like to visit, we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a
time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon)
and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends. Click here

 to
make a reservation.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Pineridge Natural Area Banding Report 9/15-16

2023-09-16 Thread Josephine Tagestad
What an interesting time! After very low numbers early this week, we had 21
new birds on Friday, and then a single new bird (and two recaptures from
this season) on Saturday. Hopefully we'll see a little more activity next
week! We did have a Cooper's Hawk in one of the nets today, but she shook
herself loose during extraction. Definitely livened up the day, and we
still count it as a win to have seen one of these lovely raptors up close,
even if we didn't get to band her. We also had the station's first
education groups-- some fifth graders on Friday, and the Trailfeathers
birding group on Saturday-- and thankfully everyone got to see at least one
bird despite the low numbers today!

This report is for 9/15 through 9/16.

*New bands:*
Swainson's Thrush - 1
Black-capped Chickadee - 2
MacGillivray's Warbler - 1
Wilson's Warbler - 15
Lincoln's Sparrow - 2
Spotted Towhee - 1

*Recaptures:*
Wilson's Warbler - 2 (banded this fall)

This banding station will be operating Tuesday through Saturday, weather
and trail closures permitting,
from sunrise until about 12:30 PM. This week we are opening at 6:30. Peak
hours for seeing birds in hand aren't yet established, but so far we have
low to moderately steady activity from about 7 to 9 and another small push
at around 10:30. Park at the Maxwell Natural Area parking lot and walk
south along the trail towards Dixon Reservoir, and you will see our table
and awning on the little hillside to the left of the main trail. Consider
signing up for your visit at this link
;

registration is free and helps us plan ahead for visitor numbers. I hope to
see you there!
