[cobirds] Gray catbird
I was happy to read that the Conservancy bird banding group found several gray catbirds at Chatfield. At home, about 10 miles south of Chatfield, I have been hearing burbling, mimicry and mewing in the scrub oak clumps, but could not see who it was. First catbird in 15 years of living here! -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Re: Partial leucistic dark eye junco
I read a bit about leucism causes and effects. Seems there is conflicting evidence about whether this is genetic or not. White patches can be caused by genetic mutations in the root cells of the feathers, or by environmental damage -- like predator claws! Some studies of mate choice in juncos indicate that the girls like the flashy white tails on the guys, but the guys do not care if girls have white. So this may or may not be genetic, and may or may not affect breeding (or survival) success. So I guess I just have to wait until next year, to see if I have a new crop of piebald juncos. That would be fun! On Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 9:22:46 AM UTC-7, Ghislaine Griswold wrote: > > Crappy photo through living room window and screen, sorry. [cobirds] Catbirds are back!
I still have not seen them up close, only some silhouettes. It was quiet yesterday, but this morning every third bush was bursting with their enthusiastic and endless, mimetic, rambling songs. [cobirds] Western tanager, briefly
I saw my first Western Tanager of the season. In my yard just south of Sedalia, off Highway 105, near West Plum Creek. Unfortunately I was working in the yard near the bird feeders and scared it off. Still a treat to see that brief blaze of yellow-orange-red! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Gulls flying over Sedalia CO?
This morning I was sure I heard gulls calling from high up, somewhere between me (Sedalia/west Plum Creek) and Devils Head in Douglas County, seemed to be flying south along the foothills. I used to live in NJ, so I thought I knew gull noises. Does anyone else hear gulls? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
