Yesterday I went to the ponds at Weld County Rds 61/74 in search of
American Golden Plovers (I ended up getting 9). After they flew off I
noticed a sparrow sitting in a small tree. At first glance it looked
different than any of the other fall sparrows I had seen, but I figured it

[cobirds] Possible Bell’s Vireo- WELD

2020-05-13 Thread Joey Angstman
In the middle of a video conference I noticed a tiny bird working it’s way up
my neighbors tree. It was all grayish-white and smaller than the female House
Finches nearby. Size was more similar to a hummingbird, a little larger. The
bill and color was not right for Warbling Vireo, nor was there a distinct
eye-line/ contrasting crown. The color and shape wasn’t right for gnatcatcher.
The bird really was all one color. I would appreciate any thoughts on this as
it really was super intriguing.

Hi,

The one place I’ve seen most of these species is Bobcat Ridge Natural Area
which is in Larimer County between Loveland and Fort Collins so it would be a
bit of a drive (1.25 hours-ish depending on traffic).

Estes Park/ Rocky Mountain National Park would also have a lot of these
species, but it is still a bit of a drive.

Maybe someone else has something closer. Best of luck.

[cobirds] Need ID Help from Crow Valley (Weld County)

2016-09-06 Thread Joey Angstman

Hi,

My friend (Dan Horton) and I visited Crow Valley on Monday to see if we
could find migrants that are coming through. We did in fact find some
birds, but also realized we have don't know what they are. We were able to
narrow it down a little bit, but definitely need some help with a couple
birds. Please check out the posted pictures and let us know if we were on
the right track.

What we think we had:
1) Townshend's Warbler (warbler pictures)
2) Least Flycatcher (flycatcher pictures)
3) Cassin's Vireo (vireo pictures)

We were also having a very in depth conversation on the difference between
immature Townshend's Warbler vs immature Blackburnian Warblers. Can anyone
offer some helpful tips for differentiating between the two (other than
Townshend's being extremely more likely)?

2016-04-17 Thread Joey Angstman
Still no luck for me. Viewed the lake at 6:30 from the east side across from
the swim beach all the way to the north end, but did not spot the bird.

Prothonotary Warbler still at the same spot around 3:50. At 4 it started to

[cobirds] Lory State Park birding (Larimer)

2016-04-05 Thread Joey Angstman
Hi there,

My dad and I are looking to do some birding in the Fort Collins/Loveland area
this Thursday. While I have lived and birded in FoCo for several years I tend
to stick to natural areas in town with the occasional trip to Bobcat. I was
wondering if anyone could recommend a dog-friendly yet birdy trail somewhere in
Lory State Park. Cheers.
