Re: [cobirds] rehabber recommendation resource?

2021-06-03 Thread Marjorie Joy
As a volunteer transporter for CPW SE region I’ve been told that many
rehabbers don’t want their locations and contact information posted. The
recommended process is to call your local Wildlife office and let them make
arrangements for transport. Regarding the centers you listed, you might get
their permission to post their phone numbers.

In Pueblo, the Raptor Center at the Wildlife and Discovery Center (formerly
the Nature Center) takes calls from the public. And I believe Second Chance
Wildlife Rehab does as well. They both have websites and Facebook pages where
you can find their contact information and hours of operation.

If you can’t reach any of these places, like after hours or weekend, State
Patrol will take wildlife emergency calls and get you a wildlife officer or
park ranger.

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers,

In the CFO and other similar Facebook groups, injured birds are a very
common theme and the vast majority of posters do not have information
about how to find/contact a local rehabber. Is anyone aware of a resource
that people could be directed to that could be pointed to in these points
for people to find help for the birds quickly?

[cobirds] Pueblo County, Pueblo Nature Center access, no bird sightings

2020-06-01 Thread Marjorie Joy
Hi all,

The parking lots and trails at the Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center in
Pueblo (previously called just the Nature Center) are closed for an indefinite
period of time after a major flood event left much of the area under a foot or
more of mud and debris. Cleanup will take some time. Details and many photos
are on their Facebook page, along with contact information for offers of help
in cleaning up and donations.

Apparently, the main river trail is usable but muddy. The area can be accessed
on foot or bicycle from the Osprey Picnic Area in Rock Canyon in Lake Pueblo
State Park or from Pueblo City Park. There may be other “unofficial” access
points as well.

Re: [cobirds] big age difference in owl nestlings?

2020-05-08 Thread Marjorie Joy
I’ve not had experience with that happening for owls in the 10 years I have
been monitoring raptor nests for CPW. However, I have seen something similar
with kestrels in a nest box behind my house in Pueblo West. About 6 years ago,
3 young kestrels fledged from the box, one every other day as usual, and 2
weeks later a 4th one popped out to join the other 3. Since we can’t see into
the box, there’s no way to know for sure that there was actually that much
difference in age, but the late one looked much less mature than her siblings,
with a few pinfeathers and a slightly shorter tail.

Re: [cobirds] Question about raptors and Collared Doves

2014-12-30 Thread Marjorie Joy
Dave and all,

I have a fair number of Eurasian Collared-Doves in my Pueblo West yard, and
also see some (not nearly enough) piles of feathers. I've seen them actually
being eaten in my yard and the neighbor's by Cooper's Hawks and once by a
Merlin. Once I surprised a Sharp-shinned Hawk with one when I went out the
front door; the hawk went right and the dove went left. I was surprised at this
as they were pretty much the same size. I thought it was pretty ambitious of
the Sharpie. I expect Red-tailed Hawks, Northern Harriers, and Great Horned
Owls, all of which frequent this area, get a few as well, although I haven't
actually seen them in the act.

My neighbor is a dove hunter and shoots all three species that are found here;
he says they all taste the same.
