[cobirds] Brambling continues Thursday

2024-01-04 Thread Tim Mitzen
We arrived at 9:30 am at there had already been a brief sighting at
38.9083274, -104.8597967 which was the house of the original report in
December. After 2+ hours there was eventually another brief sighting one
street over on Pinon Valley Rd, then the Brambling which was eventually
refound and seen by many in the backyard of the house on the corner of
Pinon Valley and Meadowgreen Dr. feeding on the ground at 38.9089208,
-104.8593032. There were no feeders in this yard (as Santi noted, we
confirmed, there are many backyard feeders in this neighborhood) but there
was a noted increase of bird activity in this area when we saw it...juncos,
White-crowned Sparrows, House and Cassin's Finches, Siskins. Although
pretty diagnostic in flight, the sneaky bird easily slipped by many
observers' searching eyes between sightings, hopping between backyards and
eventually appearing to the east.

All of the neighbors we encountered asked us if we'd see the "finch" or
"bird" yet today...so it seems over the last few days the locals have
become accustomed to the birders. I think the MOB was even photographed by
a car of passing bird-watcher-watchers. 🤣

[cobirds] Re: Black Forest CBC

2022-01-14 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hugh,
I have seen large mixed species Rosy Finch flocks on the brushy slopes of
North Table Mountain here in Golden in winter feeding the way you
described. I'm not sure if other finches would do this too, but the
"rolling over" of the back ones flying over the front ones as you described
is my exact experience also. It can make it surprisingly difficult to key
in on getting views of the individuals.

[cobirds] Ruddy Turnstone - Kiowa

2019-05-08 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hello!

There was a Ruddy Turnstone this afternoon at the west boat ramp (furthest
north) of Neenoshe Reservoir, Kiowa County. It was feeding along the shore to
the north of the boat ramp with a small flock of Baird’s Sandpipers before they
were spooked by a raptor. I didn’t stick around much longer to relocate due to
the cold wind but worth checking for if you’re in the area.

 Cheers,
Tim Mitzen

[cobirds] Blackpoll Warbler - Wheatridge Greenbelt - JeffCo

2019-05-04 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hello!

Had a some decent migrant passerines at Wheatridge Greenbelt this morning
which included a male Blackpoll (initially spotted by Aaron Shipe) and
singing male Townsend's Warblers along the fence-line/dirt path SE of the
Prospect Park footbridge. Later a Cassin's Vireo was spotted sporadically
singing above the wet area between the Prospect Park bridge and Bass Lake
along the footpath as well. Some appreciated diversity for those of us not
in SE CO right now!

Other migrants included Bullock's Orioles, Yellow Warbler, Brewer's Sparrow
and Green-tailed Towhees.

Cheers,

[cobirds] African Collared-Dove; JeffCo

2019-02-27 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hello!

Earlier today my ears perked up to the song of an African Collared-Dove
providing an interesting change from all of the Eurasians around. I was
unable to see the bird and haven't ebirded it but it sounded like it was
along Goldco Circle near Ford St in Golden. Not the most exciting find for
many but yet another record along the Front Range.

Also of note in area was a beautiful adult Goshawk circling low around Ford
and Iowa yesterday afternoon.

Cheers,
Tim Mitzen

[cobirds] Palm Warbler, Scoters - S Platte Res, JeffCo

2018-11-13 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hello!

This morning at South Platte Reservoir, Lindsay Purifoy and I had a Palm
Warbler near the small parking lot on the SW corner. It was
skulking mainly in Rabbitbrush, dried thistle and a very small juniper
nearby. Lots of birders were out and others got to see it as well and get
pics. On the reservoir both female-plumaged Surf and Black Scoters
continue.

[cobirds] Palm Warbler - Golden - JeffCo

2018-10-12 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hello!

One Palm Warbler continues for a 3rd day (at least) along the Clear Creek
Trail just east of Golden today.
The location (39.760985, -105.221082) is about 100 meters east of the
junction of the trails under the Highway 58
overpass and frequents a bare weedy area below a big black trash bag caught
in the fence above.

On a short crane-filled walk this afternoon (350+ birds flying over), along
the Tucker Gulch trail in Golden this afternoon, we ran into a flock
containing two separate Palm Warblers at (39.760985, -105.221082). This is

[cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler - Kiowa - plus SE CO

2018-05-03 Thread Tim Mitzen
Lindsay Purifoy and I did some birding in the Lamar area (and en route) the
last few days. Daytime temps varied from sunny near 70 to overcast and
50's and bird movement seemed to follow what was seen in the Denver area
these days with migration gaining a little more momentum. Good to run into
Brandon Percival and Duane Nelson after so many years!

Black-throated Blue Warbler - Kiowa - male seen on the north side of
Neeskah/Upper Queens Reservoir feeding low to mid-levels of bare looking
trees where the lake access corridor has been cut (as seen on google maps).
Best accessed from the dirt road between Rd C and Rd E (according to
google at least) and then walking east to the cut swath

Palm Warbler - one singing near the boat ramp of Neeskah Res/Upper Queens
(Rd C and Rd 47 Intersection) --- also Red-eyed Vireo

Northern Parula - one at Lamar Community College (north end) and one other
at the above BTBW grove area

Summer Tanager - part yellow part red kind - Lamar Community College grove
(north end)

White-throated Sparrow - Lamar Community College grove

Red Crossbills - a flock of at least 9 seen feeding high in some
cottonwoods on the northern limit of Lamar CC grove. They seemed to be
feeding on the Cottonwood catkins alongside the warblers.

Cheers and good luck to those heading down that way this weekend!

[cobirds] FOY Broad-tailed Hummingbirds - JeffCo

2018-04-09 Thread Tim Mitzen

As a follow-up to Kevin's post today about hummingbirdsthey're
definitely trickling in now.

At least one male Broad-tailed Hummingbird has been frequenting my feeder
almost daily since last Friday April, 6th (put the feeder up on April 1st
with the cold weather we've been having but have been out of town since
then so maybe he has been visiting longer).

Either way, glad to see them again!
