Re: [cobirds] Veterans Now Free at All CO National Parks!

2020-11-13 Thread Todd Deininger
As I understand the guidelines you will need to apply for a Veteran ID Card
or some other form of id the shows your status to show at the park.

It is a quick process to apply for the VIC, I did it on my phone the other
night.

The free entrance also applies to Gold Star families.

2020-05-15 Thread Todd Deininger
The whip-poor-will put on a great show last night (5/14). It started
calling around 8:24 and called continously for about 25 minutes. It
eventually flew down to the roadside and began calling right next to us. At
one point flew a circle over our heads. Then the wind picked up and it
stopped calling.

#my2cents - Keep the RBA going. Is someone really going to head out from
Denver to see the horned grebe in San Miguel Co.? The RBA helps us get a
better understanding of the status and distribution of the birds moving

Re: [cobirds] Subspecies of White-winged Crossbill (and other species) and eBird

2018-01-10 Thread Todd Deininger
So how do we treat SSp, such as Mallard or American Coot? Yesterday I swung
by LUNA and counted Mallards (
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S41784615), I put them all down as
northern, should I have just left it as Mallard. Same goes with AMCO.
Aren't all our coots red shielded? My recent trip to AZ (
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S41501896) I accidentally put AMCO
into both boxes, which one should I shift it to?

On another note, where does one find SSp. info that ebird is using. Of late
I have notice the northern House Wren has been popping up on checklists.

[cobirds] Anti Hunting Comment

2017-11-18 Thread Todd Deininger
According to the Rules of COBirds

"Pro-hunting vs. anti-hunting discussions are not allowed. This does not
prohibit discussions on the status and effects of hunting on a species or
group of species"

I believe Ted Floyd's comment should be removed from the list. I am amazed
that the role hunters have played in the increase in population of water
fowl is not understood.

[cobirds] Palm Warbler & Harris Sparrow, First Creek at DEN Open Space, Denver

2016-12-04 Thread Todd Deininger
After dropping my wife off at DIA I decided to check out the new open space
in Denver, First Creek at DEN Open Space. At around 3pm 1.2 miles north on
Buckley where the power lines cross the road I found a western *Palm
Warbler* in the large Cottonwood east of the road with a flock of *House
Finch* and *American Tree Sparrows*. I continued on to the 2 mile mark and
on the return trip I did not see the Palm Warbler again, but I did not
spend much time looking.

I also found a *Harris Sparrow* east of the light rail track in the trees
next to the creek.

[cobirds] Surf Scoter and Black-bellied Plovers, LUNA, Weld Co.

2015-10-21 Thread Todd Deininger
I stopped by LUNA after work and saw the Surf Scoter reported yesterday.
Also, 3 Black-bellied Plover were on the spit. They disappeared around 5pm
after something spooked the large group of Ring-billed Gulls, 46 Franklin's
Gulls and 1 Herring Gull for the second time. We could not see what
spooked them.

My last CO Tri-colored in 2006(?) was at Lower Latham and later saw the

[cobirds] McIntosh Lake, Boulder County restricted area

2015-08-10 Thread Todd Deininger
Hi all, I was talking to one of the city workers today and they have had
some complaints about off trail activity at the lake. If you bird
McIntosh, please be aware that the area south of the gravel trail is off
limits to the public. This is on the NW gravel trail that goes from
Mariner Dr./Airport Rd. west. There is no fence or markers, but the giant
map before you get onto the trail is hard to miss.

On another note, I observed an Osprey carrying nesting material to the
tower today.

[cobirds] Gray Jays, Lake County, 10/17-10/19, and some Pitkin

2014-10-19 Thread Todd Deininger
The Gray Jays were very active in Lake County this weekend. I spent the
weekend exploring some 4WD roads with a quick jaunt into Aspen and on every
road I took I came across Gray Jays along side the road. Total six
different locations across Lake County, plus two in Pitkin County.

Not much in the way of water fowl on the lakes in Lake County, *Common
Merganser* was on most all bodies of water except Crystal Lake (only
shovelers here). A lone *Clark's Grebe* was on upper Twin Lake. 13 *Western
Grebe*, 7 *Eared Grebe*, 4 *Ruddy Duck*, and 12 *Gadwall *on Turquoise.

On the Pitkin side of Independence Pass a *Northern Goshawk* was soaring
above the peaks.

in the nw corner plus a couple unidentified hummingbirds, one of which
might have been a Calliope. We did not see the big flycatcher and only had
a brief glimpse of our hummingbird, which also went unidentified.

Total of 42 species for the cg and a brief drive thru Briggsdale.

[cobirds] Golden Ponds, Longmont, Boulder Co. and yard birding

2014-09-12 Thread Todd Deininger
I spent about a hour this morning at Golden Ponds. I was only able to
spend time around the ponds north of the river. The willows around the
ponds were most active with *Wilson's Warblers* and Black-capped
Chickadees. I did manage one *Orange-crowned Warbler * and a few
*Yellow-rumped
Warblers*. I estimated about 200 Barn Swallows with about 10%
juvenile *Violet-green
Swallows. *ebird flagged the 8 *Northern Rough-winged Swallow* that were
perched in a small cottonwood between the first two ponds. It did not flag
the 2 *Evening Grosbecks* that were flying NW into olde town Longmont.

I did find a vireo spuh, but I had no time left to wait for it to come out
in the open.

Around lunch time an imm. *Calliope Hummingbird* made an appearance at the
agastache. I quickly filled up a feeder, but it ignored it. Of other
note, very active *Red-breasted Nuthatches*, at least 3, and a small flock
of *Bushtits*.

Bushtits have been very active in NW Longmont this summer. Between
MacIntosh Res. and south to my house, I have had flocks of 17 (6/24), 39
(7/23), and 19 (7/25).

2014-09-01 Thread Todd Deininger

trip.

A nice irruption of out of state birders at the convention. (Nice job Tom
W.)

Great intel on dowitcher id from Jon Dunn.

 Hello, Birders.

 What a splendid CFO convention!

Here are 25 highlights that quickly come to mind. I’m sure I could
rattle off 100, but I’d rather hear from you. If you were at the
convention, what were your highlights? I’ll start us off; you do the rest.
 Here goes:

*1.* At least 12 Mississippi Kites circling right over our heads in a
crystal-blue sky. Slacker trip, Columbine Park, Sterling, Logan County,
 Aug. 30.

*2.* Learning so much from Jon Dunn—for example, how to distinguish
Colorado’s next Long-toed Stint from just another Least Sandpiper. Keynote
address, Sterling Ramada, Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 30.

*3.* More from Jon Dunn—for example, the difference between a bird’s
specific epithet and species name. Systematics and taxonomy workshop,
Sterling Ramada, Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 29.

*4.* On an impossibly still and sunny morning, a field full of sandsage
and sunflowers, Orchard Orioles and Baltimore Orioles. Fox Ranch field
 trip, Yuma County, Aug. 29.

*5.* Also at the Fox Ranch, 1 American Redstart, 2 Dickcissels, 3 Least
 Flycatchers, 4 Upland Sandpipers, 5 Clay-colored Sparrows, and 19
Red-headed Woodpeckers. Fox Ranch field trip, Yuma County, Aug. 29.

*6.* Ample food and superb company at the kickoff picnic, with
stimulating comments from Bill Kaempfer, twittering Chimney Swifts, and
trilling Cheddar Waxwings. Columbine Park, Sterling, Logan County, Aug.
 28.

  *7.* In-your-face stares from a lovely Cassin’s Vireo; also a Northern
Waterthrush and the meanest, baddest, orneriest Western Wood-Pewee in the
history of field ornithology. Migrant traps field trip, Last Chance,
 Washington County, Aug. 31.

*8.* An unbelievably humongous female giant inchneumon (*Megarhyssa
macrurus*) on the front door of the hotel. Sterling Ramada, Sterling,
 Logan County, Aug. 29.

*9.* Hundreds of Colorado soldier beetles (*Chauliognathus basalis*), an
impressive showing, in the bindweed and other flowers. Migrant traps
field trip, Akron golf course, Washington County, Aug. 31.

*10.* Along with the soldier beetles, a nifty Gray Flycatcher, a
Baltimore Oriole and a Brown Thrasher, several Clay-colored Sparrows, and a
great many Chipping Sparrows. Migrant traps field trip, Akron golf
 course, Washington County, Aug. 31.

*11.* “COBirds Quotables for $400”—Christian Nunes impersonated Alex
Trebek, entertaining and educating all of us. Jeopbirdy, Sterling Ramada,
 Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 29.

*12.* The sight of Topiltzin Martínez wrangling a plains garter snake
 (*Thamnophis
radix*); also, fearsome plains harvest-flies (*Tibicen dorsatus*) and
plains lubbers (*Brachystola magna*) and a nice showing by festive tiger
beetles (*Cicindela scutellaris*). Fox Ranch field trip, Yuma County,
 Aug. 29.

*13.* In another wrangling episode, the spectacle of Alicia Gamble and
Topiltzin Martínez chasing down a plains leopard frog (*Lithobates blairi*),
while frugivorous robins, waxwings, starlings, and a Swainson’s Thrush
worked a berry-laden mulberry tree. Slacker trip, Columbine Park,
 Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 30.

*14.* With Christy Carello at a Mexican restaurant in town, an inspiring
“student mixer” and a whole lot of chips and salsa. Mi Ranchito,
 Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 29.

*15.* Another Christy Carello initiative, the edifying Saturday
afternoon paper sessions; Lauryn Benedict’s presentation on duetting by
Colorado songbirds was fascinating to me. Sterling Ramada, Sterling,
 Logan County, Aug. 30.

*16.* House Sparrows—that’s right, House Sparrows—duetting outside the
hotel; we learned from Lauryn Benedict that House Sparrow pairs sing duets,
so I went outside and confirmed this with audio recordings. Sterling
Ramada, Sterling, Logan County, Sept. 1.

*17.* During the break between the paper sessions, chocolate-glazed
donut holes with sprinkles; I think maybe they have crack in them?? Sterling
Ramada, Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 30.

*18.* On the drive back west with David Gillilan and Jon Dunn, a chance
 encounter with David Leatherman and Bill Kaempfer’s “departure trip”;
Franklin’s Gulls and Least Terns galore. Timnath Reservoir, Larimer
 County, Sept. 1.

*19.* Wonderful vendors; I confess, I found myself particularly
attracted to Glenn Walbek’s table, but all of the vendors had great items
and information. Sterling Ramada, Sterling, Logan County, Aug. 29–30.

*20.* Reflections at the banquet by Ron Ryder Award recipient Catherine
Ortega on the various influences in her life, among them conventioneer and
nonagenarian Bob Spencer. Sterling Ramada, Sterling, Logan County

[cobirds] Baird Sparrow, Logan County

2014-08-31 Thread Todd Deininger
Some CFO field trips have found a Bairds Sparrow.

Will try and get details soon.
