[cobirds] Re: Large committee of vultures in the skies above Fort Collins

2023-04-08 Thread Tony Kay

I have observed similar scenes in Costa Rica, part of the fall annual
Southern Migration accompanied by large numbers of Swainson Hawks. I would
assume this is the spring Northern Migration return of large groups
choosing to make the trip together.

Did you observe any Swainson hawks in the group?

[cobirds] Looking Ahead at Colorado Parks Access

2021-05-07 Thread Tony Kay

There have been numerous enquiries regarding Park Access, you need to be
aware of proposed changes to Park access that are slated for 2023 that are
coming before the legislature. Below is a synopsis:

*Under SB21-249, CPW is directed to create an optional, discounted "Keep
Colorado Wild Pass" that will be added when Coloradans register their
passenger vehicles, light trucks, motorcycles and recreational vehicles
starting in 2023.*

The new pass will provide access to Colorado's 42 state parks, cost no more
than $40 (half of a current parks annual pass) with a goal to bring the
price down to $20 price via high participation, and include a clear option
for registrants to choose not to purchase the pass. Similar programs in
other states have enjoyed strong participation (85% in Montana!) and helped
generate increased revenue to support responsible management of park lands.
In addition, the new revenue will ensure sufficient staffing and resources
to manage and conserve Colorado’s 42 existing state parks. So, if this is
something you support, feel free to ask your State Senator to support
HB21-249 - the Keep Colorado Wild Pass!

Duck and shorebird season has reminded me once again that I need a decent scope
to see them. Wondering if anyone has a used scope in good condition they might
want to sell. Or recommendations for a moderately priced model. I use Nikon
Monarch binocs, so that may gave an idea of what I expect— not the best, but
not the cheapest either.

Not sure whether I saw a flock of 12 snow geese or Am pelicans overhead this

RE: [cobirds] State wildlife areas require social security #--what can we do?

2021-04-02 Thread Tony Kay
Just an FYI a Senior fishing license(65+) plus Habitat stamp will cost you
$10.07 for an annual license, a regular license costs $36.08.

The only information required is date of residency and drivers license number,
you will then need to provide an address and email. After the initial purchase
you will be assigned a CID number which you will use when making future
purchases.

Jared, if not, you could get a fishing license instead at a Walmart, etc., and

annual. You can check the Colorado Department of Wildlife website to see if it

[cobirds] DFO Zoom Meeting with Hundermark and Goodrich

2020-08-24 Thread Tony Kay
Bill, Chuck and Greg,

I thought I would give you some feedback on the DFO Zoom meeting held
tonight 8/24/2020. This was by far the most productive meeting I have
attended bar none.

While it is great getting everyone together to socialize and enjoy the
presentations, tonight's presentation was special. As a participant I was
able to follow and replicate every instruction suggestion and tech advice
Greg and Chuck had to offer. For example the section on Costa Rica was
invaluable, I frequently bird there. The amount information the two of you
managed to go through in 90 minutes was staggering.

Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this presentation,

Good job,

Tony Kay

Denver.

P.S. in case Bill does not get this email, please forward to him.

RE: [cobirds] Collared-Dove ID

2020-05-18 Thread Tony Kay
Peter,

The African Collared Dove has a very distinctive call, very different from the
Eurasian, so if it sounded like a Eurasian, I would suggest pale Eurasian it is.

COBirders,

Last week I was on Old South Saint Vrain Rd. in Lyons, Boulder County, and
encountered a very pale Collared-Dove. I'm curious if people think this is
African, a hybrid Eurasian x African or just a very pale or Leucistic Eurasian?
