[cobirds] Huerfano County update: 11 swans a-stretching
While walking the dog at Martin Lake, Lathrop State Park, we saw what we thought was 10 swans all huddled together far out on the ice...it was not until the they all, very briefly, simultaneously lifted their heads that we counted 11! Too far away and no vocalizations were made, so not even going to hazard a guess as to Tundra or Trumpeter. Merry Christmas everyone! [cobirds] Bent County: Red-throated Loon, Least Tern, Piping Plover
Went out to John Martin Reservoir this morning. Was a great birding day! Red-throated Loon (a lifer for Paul), Least Terns, one Piping Plover...who was about 500 yards outside the nesting area, Marbled Godwits, a lone Least Sandpiper...all in the same place! Blue Grosbeaks, Northern Shrike, Scaled Quail, and a Bobcat rounded out the day! Our thanks to the Goffs for stopping to tell us of they had seen the loon...we we're ready to leave...thank goodness we did not! Just remember those little Piping Plovers and Least Terns do not read the signs...so be very careful and stay well back! ;-) Sent from my iPad -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Huerfano County Update: Two Yellow-billed Cuckoos
This morning I had set the goal for myself to sit on the side porch and try identify all the birds I was hearing by song. All my best intentions flew out the window when I heard my Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling. Off the porch I went in hot pursuit. The first Cuckoo was giving the coo song...faintly and then louder and continued to give that call the entire time. When the second Cuckoo arrived the call was so much deeper and more throaty...almost thought it was a bird mimicking a cuckoo. Almost like a cuckoo with a cold...or like a person who smokes heavily. This bird gave both the coo song and the kowlp-kowlp song. It was not until I saw both birds fly off together that I could confirm two cuckoos. Exciting to have them back this year...especially as I understand that the western sub-species of this bird is in decline! We hope for successful nesting again this year...lots and lot of caterpillars in the area so food should be plentiful. Birds are observed for 30 minutes or more. [cobirds] Las Animas County: Hepatic Tanager pair
Had a wonderful time at the CFO convention. Learned a great deal and met some very nice folks. We took Hwy 12 home and decided, even though it was 2:30 pm, to stop at the site just out of Trinidad for HEPATIC TANGER that was seen there by a CFO group two days earlier. We delighted to see a male and female! I have posted photos on my Facebook page and submitted reports for both. I would be very interested in finding out if this is one of the few known breeding sites for HEPATIC in the state or if it was unknown before the convention! [cobirds] Huerfano County: Hepatic Tanager
We were running late...on our way to CFO convention but just had to stop at Rouse Road to check for Hepatic Tanager...were rewarded with wonderful views. Too far for photographs...but we're able to watch it for around 15 minutes!
