[cobirds] Raptor Alley Survey (Nunn, CO)
I ran another Winter Raptor Survey this morning along the Raptor Alley route in Nunn. I had thirty raptors, a little above average (Avg=24) among seven species, which is about typical. Today's species: - BAEA - 3 - GOEA - 2 - NOHA - 7 - RTHA - 4 - FEHA - 6 - AMKE - 7 - MERL - 1 Missed out on Prairie Falcon and Rough-legged, the latter seems to be in low numbers here in NOCO this winter (https://science.ebird.org/en/status-and-trends/species/rolhaw/trends-map?season=nonbreeding) Here's the link to the HMANA Raptor Survey data for those interested (includes Colorado and National data): https://wrs.hmana.org/public_html/index.php Robert Beauchamp Fort Collins -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Nunn - Raptor Alley
Conducted the first HMANA Winter Raptor Survey for the season this morning along the Raptor Alley route near Nunn, CO. Weather conditions were good and picked up 24 individuals comprised of 7 species (BAEA, RTHA, FEHA, NOHA, PRFA, AMKE, & MERL). A non-raptor highlight along the route were a pair of Curve-billed Thrashers. [cobirds] Evening Grosbeak Vocalizations
Many of us are aware of the 11+ types of Red Crossbill vocalizations in North America; I recently learned that Evening Grosbeaks have at least five types of vocalizations, which differ by geographic area (we have type 4 here in the Rocky Mts.). Like Crossbills, these differing vocalizations, along with geographic isolation and other factors, could inform speciation among these populations. In his recent webinar for LA Birders, Lance Brenner provided a comprehensive overview of vocalizations by both Crossbills and Grosbeaks in North America. Here is a link to that webinar: https://www.labirders.org/webinars/crossbills.html Audio recordings of Crossbills & Grosbeaks uploaded to eBird over the past decade have provided tremendous opportunities for researchers to understand geographic differentiation of populations by voice. With the irruption of grosbeaks this winter, I encourage you to record audio of grosbeak calls and upload them to eBird to add to this database, Good birding! [cobirds] Raptor Alley - Nunn
After reading Ajit Antony's post on the 18th regarding HMANA's Winter Raptor Survey, I uploaded the Nunn Raptor Alley route into their database and drove the route earlier today. Raptor Alley is included in the Eastern Plains Colorado Birding Trail <https://coloradobirdingtrail.com/site/raptor-alley/>. The diversity of birds was decent, though the numbers were a bit low. I only saw a handful of active prairie dogs on today's chilly day, which may have impacted some of the foraging of larger birds. Lots of Horned Larks, with a group of about 800 on CR33 at CR94. Among them I heard only two Lapland Longspurs, and briefly scanned for bunting, but no luck. Here are the raptor numbers: - 1 Golden Eagle - 2 Northern Harrier - 2 Bald Eagle - 7 Red-tailed Hawk - 1 Rough-legged Hawk - 2 Ferruginous Hawk - 2 American Kestrel - 1 Prairie Falcon Here is the link to the Hawk Migration Association of North America if you are interested in their work: https://www.hmana.org/winter-raptor-survey/ Robert Beauchamp Fort Collins -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Nunn CBC Results
A team of six of us completed the Nunn CBC yesterday. First off, it was a gorgeous day out on the grasslands. Temperatures were mild for December and we had little wind, which made for good birding. 30 species included: - Cackling Goose (new for the count) - Canada Goose - Golden Eagle - Bald Eagle - Red-tailed Hawk - Rough-legged Hawk - Ferruginous Hawk - Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon) - Eurasian Collared-Dove - Great Horned Owl - Downy Woodpecker - Northern Flicker - American Kestrel - Merlin - Prairie Falcon - Northern Shrike - Blue Jay - Black-billed Magpie - Common Raven - Horned Lark - Mountain Bluebird (new for the count) - Townsend's Solitaire - American Robin (112 was a high count; Fort Collins also had an AMRO high count this year) - European Starling (also a high count) - Lapland Longspur - Snow Bunting (last count sighting in 1996) - American Tree Sparrow - Dark-eyed Junco (Slate-colored) - Song Sparrow - Western Meadowlark - House Sparrow There are still many more counts between now and January 4th to participate in. [cobirds] Crow Valley Update
Visited CV campground this morning (on the way back from Jumbo). It was a little breezy, but the trees along the entrance road into the first picnic shelter were birdy. I ran into John V. and we had a variety of warblers (Wilson's, Yellow, Townsends, Redstart (John), Tennessee). Also at least three species of empid. Feels like a good time to monitor that hotspot. [cobirds] Jumbo/Red Lion Update
I visited Jumbo and Red Lion on Friday. Water levels on Jumbo are real low and while that afforded a lot of shoreline, there were not many shorebirds, mostly Baird's and Spotted. Curiously, while the campgrounds are open for day use, "no overnight camping" signs are posted everywhere. Wondering if that is due to overly dry conditions and fire concern or if there is something else going on. I visited two parts of Red Lion. One is the marsh boardwalk/blind beneath little jumbo reservoir. Most of the Russian Olive and other understory growth has been removed, so not much habitat for song birds; I also dipped on the Bell's Vireo. There appears to be only one report from this year in ebird, David D. had a pair about a week ago. The R.L. pond is teaming with ducks (pintail, shovelers, teal, etc) and ibis. It had a handful of peeps, but difficult to get close to the pond, as access from the parking lot was posted as closed. There might be some good stuff back in there, just unable to access. The normally wet areas along CR95 were dry. Robert Beauchamp Fort Collins -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Nice variety of grassland birds at Reservoir Ridge Nat. Area (Ft. Collins) this morning. Four Dickcissel vocalizing. I wouldn't normally have seen this, except for safe-at-home quarantine. A plethora of birds swarming the oranges at the feeder including: Black-headed Grosbeak Rose-breasted Grosbeak Lazuli Bunting Western Tanager oodles of Bullocks, dripping from the trees, also 4 sparrow species 2 warbler species, among other normal fauna, which likely attracted the Coopers Hawk and Northern Harrier. [cobirds] Jumbo Reservoir & Surrounds, Logan Co
I explored portions of Sedgwick, Logan, & Washington counties earlier today. Jumbo Reservoir, Little Jumbo, and Prewitt were all rather full with little or no shoreline, resulting in no shorebirds. Similarly, Red Lion SWA was overly full of water, which yielded lots of dabbling ducks, but few shorebirds (excepting a bevy of WIPH). The entrance road to Duck Creek SWA was teaming with Upland Sandpipers, I was easily able to locate 9 individuals on the drive in; it makes me wonder how many more are in the massive fields nearby. With full reservoirs, I'm thinking that seasonal playas throughout the eastern plains will be a good treat this spring for migrating shorebirds. If anyone has suggestions of good plains playa hotspots (in addition to what Gary Lefko is posting (thanks Gary!)), I would love to hear about them. [cobirds] Pawnee National Grassland Update
I shot out for a peregrination within the Pawnee this morning. It’s still a bit early in migration out on the plains; here are some details for what’s happening in northern Weld county. A goodly number of Sharp-tailed Grouse just east of Grover. I had two groups of 7 or 8 birds along CR 130 (out btw CR 95 & 105). They were perched up on trees and power lines, providing good views. A couple of Golden Eagles, along with numerous horned and meadow larks. The playas I passed had some water, but not much. No shorebird activity….yet. Adams & Bunker Reservoir #1 was full of water, along with a nice assortment of dabbling ducks. The creek through Crow Valley campground, however, is dry, as is the marshy area just north of the campground; nothing unusual in the campground, except for the palpable excitement among the hordes of boy scouts camping there. Crossing fingers for some spring precipitation to refresh the creeks and playas among the plains <http://pljv.org/for-habitat-partners/maps-and-data/maps-of-probable-playas/> and a sweet spring migration. [cobirds] Re: Fort Collins Black Friday Birding Frolic
We had a fabulous turnout for the first annual Fort Collins Black Friday Birding Frolic, despite the windy conditions this morning. Twenty-eight folks turned out, including a few elementary aged birders, a couple scouts working on their badge, and others enthusiastic to be outdoors today. We began on Rigden Reservoir (Arapahoe Bend NA) where a flock of seagulls (the bird, not the band) provided some good views while they fed on small fish and crayfish on the east shoreline. Ring-billed, California, and Herring Gull, sadly no Bonapartes. There were also a good number of Common Goldeneye on the water. By the way, never call a gull a seagull around serous birders, it really gets their goat. :) Another highlight, particularly for the kiddos, was a Great-horned Owl that was flushed from the riverbank. Some of us then headed over and walked the Poudre River Trail between the ELC and Prospect Ponds. We ran into another enthusiastic group of birders looking for the Winter Wren (no luck), The Fox Sparrow (no luck), and the Rusty Blackbird (no luck), but were treated to a close up view of a Red-tailed Hawk snacking on what can only be described as a small furry mammal (too big for a mouse, vole perhaps?). We also had a hybrid Snow-Canada Goose in one of the ponds. 26 species total. By the end of the morning, the remaining birders were salivating for thanksgiving leftovers and a mid-afternoon nap. Enjoy the rest of the weekend! The Fort Collins Audubon hosted their monthly bird walk at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area this morning; rescheduled to avoid tomorrow's snow storm. The highlight among the thirty four species was a juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. This bird provided good views as it foraged among some freshly drilled sap holes. We also had eastern and mountain bluebirds and lots of creepers, ruby-crowned kinglets, yellow-rumped warblers and four hermit thrush. While on the trail we heard that Josh B had located Surf Scoters on Rigden Reservoir. A visit to the reservoir in the afternoon presented 3 SUSC and one Palm Warbler. There is a empty nesting pole in the center of the marsh. I observed the bird while standing on the access road about 50-100 feet south of the pole. Look to the open water that is southwest of the nesting pole. [cobirds] Probable Red-Shouldered Hawk, Larimer
I observed a probable RSHA yesterday afternoon near the Colorado Welcome Center in Fort Collins. Initially seen from afar when it was soaring and being harassed by two similarly sized RTHAs. Once I arrived closer, I captured a few photos that may be found at the CFO facebook page <https://www.facebook.com/groups/CFObirds/>. I apologize for the late posting. My initial thoughts was that it was a juvenile NOGO, however a review of the photos last night suggest otherwise. [cobirds] Common Redpoll, Crow Valley
I visited Crow Valley Campground this morning in search of D. Leatherman's Common Redpolls reported a few days ago and I was not disappointed. I had 12 CORE foraging among the seed bearing grasses in the marshy area at the rear of the property (north-east end). I suspect there were more, as additional flyovers had calls not dissimilar to the Redpoll. Just after noon, while out on the grassland, I saw the Fort Collins Harris's Hawk post on Cobirds, located just .5 mile from my home. So I shot back to FC, blasting through every orange light between Briggsdale and FC (all one of them), just in time to dip on the hawk. So sad, let's hope she hangs around for a bit longer. [cobirds] Geese, Equalizer Lake, Larimer Co.
There were about 10,000 geese on Equalizer Lake mid-day today, which, being a rather small "lake" provides some good views on the greater and lesser Canada geese, as well as lot of Cackling geese. Also present, a couple Snow Geese, one White-Fronted Goose, and at least one hybrid (Canada-Snow). Lots of other dabblers as well. [cobirds] ABA Birding Ethics (or lack there of)
The American Woodcock continues at Bobcat Ridge Natural Area. What doesn't continue is caution and respect to ensure the bird is not stressed by overly enthusiastic birders trying to tick it off their lists. Birders should refrain from tromping through the creek area in hopes of stumbling upon the bird. Per the ABA code of ethics, exercise restraint and caution during observation, photography etc. and stay on the trails. The welfare of the birds is more important than your checklist. [cobirds] Re: Status of a couple Larimer rarities
Thanks for sharing Dave! I went by 1520 W. Mountain Ave. (Fort Collins) this afternoon and was treated to a visit by the continuing Yellow-throated Warbler. Luke, the owner, mentioned that the bird has been more active on these warm days. In addition to visiting the feeder, it also spent about 10 minutes flittering about the deciduous tree in the back yard. I also visited "Sherwood Forest" on the CSU campus this afternoon. Of note were two Myrtle Yellow-rump Warblers flycatching from the trees located between the Forestry Building and the Oval. [cobirds] Re: Grandview Cemetery (Larimer County), 9/28/13
While I could not locate the Northern Parula at Grandview Cemetary this afternoon, there were two Great Horned Owls making quite a show of things at 5:00 p.m. The lighting at that time is great for photographing. One buzzed right by me with a squirrel in his talons. That tree was hoppin' with stuff, including Orange-crowned Warblers, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and what looked like a possible young Chestnut-sided Warbler, but I couldn't get a clean look. Most interesting bird this morning was an EASTERN PHOEBE on the right edge of a shorter tree in the very southeastern corner of the cemetery looking across the creek and bridge near parking lot area facing northeast. We were standing right next to that water pump building or whatever that thing is. Also had my first of season Brown Creeper. 25 species total.
