About 8 p.m. on my walk in my neighborhood, I had a Black-throated
Hummingbird pair about 15 feet from me. The male was "strafing" (harassing)
the female. She dropped to some wood chips under a newly planted tree, and
he kept dive-bombing her. She kept watching him and fending him off. This
continued for 4 or 5 minutes. Of course, I did not have my camera with me!
He perched on the tree stake with his beautiful purple band brilliantly
lighted by the setting sun to the west. I have never seen one that well
before. I backed off to run get my camera, and by the time I got back, of
course I could not find them! But you can bet that I will be watching my
feeders all day tomorrow! I have lots of broad-taileds, but no rufous yet.
Location is just south of 58th St on Van Bibber (just east of Hwy 93 and
right below N Table Mt).
