The Black Forest CBC counted 1948 birds of 39 species; average 1748 birds, 38
species.  Our 25 observers went out in 13 partis.
Two new top counts: 75 Red-breasted nuthatches - way above prior high of
35; 217 Red Crossbills - more than  double previous high of 130.Besides that,
some minor peaks  29 flickers (previous high 23, ave. 19); 26 ravens (=
previous high)    We always enjoy this count, as well as our other CBCs.
Starting this year, Jeannie Mitchell will run the count.

2023-01-11 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The Black Forest CBC on Jan. 2, 2023, encountered adverse weather. Only 4 of
us went out, and we had 4 counting at 2 feeders. The fog and the snow made
conditions unsafe, so that none of the walking parties covered their (mostly
ponderosa pine) territories, and the drivers elected not to navigate roads so
foggy other cars couldn't see a stopped birder's vehicle.
We ended up with 31 species (close to the average of 35) but only 364 birds
(1538 average). No notable observations to report.

No one reacted to my description of a mystery flock that Urling and I saw. We
watched about 100 small birds feeding on a brushy hillside. The birds in back
kept flying over the front ones -- until they all took off for parts unknown. I
thought they sounded like Rosy-finches, but Urling saw stripey breasts.

Do any of you have experience with flocking birds that act this way?

2022-01-13 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
The 51st Black Forest CBC, held on Jan. 2, recorded 40 species and 1,635
individual birds. Average number of the 51 counts: 35 species and 1608 birds.
We had 21 observers in 8 parties, plus 7 feeder-watchers.
I don't detect much of a pattern of high and low counts.
We found fewer than average of some ponderosa species -- 49 Mtn. Chickadees
(ave. 64) and 75 Pygmy Nuthatches (ave. 89), but more Steller's Jays (57 vs.
30). The 24 Red-tailed Hawks way above the average 10, but 7 Rough-leggeds cf.
10 average.

Two invasive species dropped: Starling 94 (ave. 143); House Sparrow (2 vs.
23). Two increased: Rock Pigeon 74 vs. 25, Eur. Collared-Dove 32 vs. 6.

[cobirds] Black Forest CBC (El Paso, Elbert, & Douglas

2022-01-03 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
We enjoyed a pleasant day yesterday on the Black Forest CBC. The temperature
cooperated, and we even ate lunch outdoors at Davis Ammons' ranch. We got  most
excited by seeing the first Rough-legged Hawks in 3-4 years. We saw 3 of them,
2 Bald Eagles, one each Golden Eagle, Red-tail, and Ferruginous. Quite a lot of
Horned Larks poplulated the roads, but no longspurs.

We saw one mystery flock of 100 or so birds. Small, sparrow/finch shaped. We
watched them on a brushy hillside as they leap-frogged over each other for 2-3
minutes. Far away, in poor light, we couldn't see them well. Then the whole
flock flew in a tight formation we-know-not-where. I had the impression of
rosy-finches, based on shape, call note, and behavior. Urling disagrees, so I'm
not sure what to report. Suggestions welcome.

Hugh Kingery
PS: Urling & I will work on responding to Nick Komar's challenge to name the 10
best birds of 2021.

2021-01-10 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
On the Black Forest Christmas bird count, on Jan. 3, we covered the usual
places with the usual amount of effort, so I think we can fairly compare to
prior years. My records show this as the 50th count, with the first one in 1957
-- initiated by Dick Beidleman.
This year we counted 34 species, 1156 individuals, both below the averages
of  35 species & 1574 individuals.
     We found more than the average for these species: Downy, Hairy, & Flicker;
Steller's, magpie, and both chickadees; White-breasted & Pygmy nuthatches; and
Red-winged Blackbirds. We had an almost record for Black-capped Chickadee (46
-- in 2012 we had 47.    We recorded below average numbers for crow, Horned
Lark, Red-breasted Nuthatch, starling, and House Sparrows (none this year).
In our section the ponderosas had no cones, so the count of Pygmies (132)
surprised us; the count has had as many as 180. The count this year recorded no
crossbills.

On the Black Forest CBC, we counted 1545 birds of 42 species. The species count
= second highest of 28 counts. We had only 23 counters - feel free to join us
next year for a couple of challenging hikes or some rewarding drive-arounds.

We had a good variety of raptors on the count:
1 Bald Eagle
13N.Harrier
1 Sharp-shinned Hawk
1 N. Goshawk
53Red-tailed Hawk
19Rough-legged Hawk
14Am. Kestrel
1 Merlin
2 Prairie Falcon

 The variety otherwise seemed typical.

2014-01-12 Thread Hugh Kingery
We who went on the Black Forest CBC despite unwelcoming weather -- from
minus 2 degrees F up to a balmy 9 degrees -- enjoyed a larky day. Snow covered
the fields and brought a record number of Horned Larks into the roads where we
could count them -- the 971 topped the previous high by 200 birds. Among them
Aaron Shipe found 4 Lapland Longspurs. Otherwise the count had a fairly high
number of birds (2,054), courtesy of the larks, and a low species count (35).
The pines continue bereft of cones, so we had very low counts of
chickadees/nuthatches/winter finches. I can't offer any information about the
effect of the devastating fire -- our count leader, Judy von Ahlefeldt, lost
her house to it. In her place, Jeannie Mitchell coordinated the south half of
the count (El Paso County).
