Hey COBirders,

Today was my first day for banding at Clear Spring Ranch in 2017. I had hoped
the low ceiling, mist and SE breeze might deliver some migrants, and that
happened, but not really until I was closing at about 1030.

The only real migrants to appear were 3 Lincoln’s Sparrows (banded), a small
flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers (only one banded, a second-year male Myrtle),
and 3 House Wrens, maybe migrants. Pretty quiet so far.

more soon,

2016-09-24 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

The wind did bring in some new birds this morning for banding at Clear Spring
Ranch, but nothing unique. What was unusual was catching many species that I
thought were gone for the season, having not seen them for 7-10 days. Among the
catch for today a Hatch-year Dusky Flycatcher, a HY F Lazuli Bunting (last one
9/15), a HY Savannah Sparrow (last one 9/14), a HY Vesper Sparrow (last one
9/10), an adult F MacGillivray’s Warbler (last one 9/18), and a recap (from
8/25) Yellow-breasted Chat (last one 9/16).

A couple of seasonal milestones - today I banded Chipping Sparrow #900 ! (only
about 800 more than any other year!). Of those, about 175 were adults, for
about a 5:1 ratio of adults to juvs. I have 1875 total birds for the season
(previous high count - 525 in 2015, through 10/31!) It has been an exceptional
year. Almost every species I catch has much higher numbers than any previous
fall. The oats across the road were finally mowed, and 12” of stubble left in
place, but there are very few birds coming out of the field anymore. Why are
there so many more birds at CSR than in other years? You got me - I’m just
recording the phenomenon!

Oh, and I’m not done. I plan to be out there for another month.

more soon,
Steve Brown

2015-10-17 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBirders,

A good arrival of sparrows and Ruby-crowned Kinglets this morning at Clear
Spring Ranch. Best was my third White-throated Sparrow of the week. Also a
couple of Sandhill Cranes flew over - but not hundreds, this morning.
Last day for my banding season is tomorrow.

Rough total for banded birds this season at CSR (since 8/1/2015, all at the
riparian willow-marsh area, near the sod house) - 450 birds.

Notable species counts-
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 8
Yellow Warbler - 31 (plus several recaptures - some probably local breeders,
some returning migrants)
Wilson’s Warbler - 57
Orange-crowned Warbler - 7 (plus two recaptures from last year)
Common Yellowthroat - 31
Yellow-rumped Warbler -1
Chestnut-sided Warbler -1
N Waterthrush - 1
Yellow-breasted Chat - 5 (plus several recaptures from previous years)
Gray Catbird - 25
Chipping Sparrow - 72
Song Sparrow - 39
Lincoln’s Sparrow - 11
White-crowned Sparrow - 45 (Gambell’s, 2 Mountain) (two recaptured returns from
last spring)
White-throated Sparrow - 3
