[cobirds] Caspian Terns Still at San Luis Lake
Went there this morning before the winds and had a nice few hours out there. In case any are wondering, I spoke with the campground host last week and he said camping was free so long as you had proper SWA pass/license. Some exciting birds were: 3 Caspian Terns 1 Herring Gull 2 BB Plovers 1 Sanderling 24 Western Sandpipers 22 least sandpipers 18 Willets 40 Marbled Godwits John Rawinski Monte Vista, CO -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Caspian Terns
John Stump and I birded San Luis Lake today and were excited to find 4 Caspian Terns sitting on a sandbar amongst many Ring-billed, and Franklin's Gulls. They are rare to unusual in the San Luis Valley. Cold wind made for watery eyes through the scope but we did get some pics for eBird. [cobirds] Caspian Terns at Pueblo Reservoir (Pueblo Co.) 10/7
Early this morning, Margie Joy found a flock of three Caspian Terns flying west from Turkey Creek, on the far western side of Pueblo Reservoir. Late morning, I was able to re-find two of them on an island out from the South Shore Marina. Margie was also able to see them sitting with gulls on this island. Other things of note, an American Avocet, Franklin's Gull, a first year Herring Gull, all near the South Shore Marina. Margie saw a young Bald Eagle and a Greater Roadrunner in the Turkey Creek area of Pueblo Reservoir, as well. When the goodies leave Chatfield, please let us know, we'll be watching for them down here, especially the Ruddy Turnstone. [cobirds] Caspian Terns at Blanca Wetlands
Today while doing some bird surveys, I chanced upon 2 Adult Caspian Terns at the Blanca Wetlands Wildlife Area (Alamosa County). The area is now open and the birds were alternately using pond 115 and 107. This is possibly only the second and third records for the species in the San Luis Valley, with Mlodinow finding one last year at Smith Reservoir. The shorebirds were well represented. Between my wife Lisa and I, we observed Western, Least, Baird’s, Spotted and Pectoral Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, BN Stilts, close to 1500 Wilson Phalaropes, Peregrine Falcons, and one Gray Flycatcher. So shorebirds are on the move and this is a great increase in numbers since we last surveyed a few weeks ago. Lots to see. [cobirds] Caspian Terns Barr Lake (Adams)
Today 9-22 at 10:30 a.m. I had two Caspian Terns at Barr Lake (Adams). Straight out from the banding station past the mudflats on a small sand island, but they were also up doing their thing around the reservoir so they could have been viewed from several areas. One appeared to be an adult and the other looked like a first-year bird with light grayish mottling on sides, more black on primaries and slightly lighter-colored black cap. E-mail me if you'd like to see photos. On the same island the Califirnia Gulls outnumbered the Ring-billed, and behind them in the shallow water were four Great Egrets. [cobirds] Caspian Terns and other stuff, Larimer
Hi all, I found a pair of Caspian Terns at the Wellington Gravel Pits off Kechter (sp?) Rd. in SE Fort Collins this morning. They were standing on one of the little gravel islands in the middle of the pond, hanging out with several Franklin's Gulls. On a nearby island I also found a pair of Semipalmated Plovers roving about. A short ways down Larimer County Road 5 south of Kechter in the ag fields were 5 Cattle Egrets. I also birded earlier at Dixon Reservoir. Nothing terribly unusual there, with the highlights being a handful of Bushtits, my FOY Clay-colored Sparrow, and a pair of Orange-crowned Warblers.
