[cobirds] Harris's Sparrows - Walden Ponds - Boulder Co
Two Harris's Sparrows were present today at noon near the western edge of Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat proper. They were mainly lurking in the junipers and Russian Olives near the barbed-wire fence on the west side of the "Ricky Weiser Wetland". [cobirds] Harris's sparrows at Chatfield Arb, Jefferson County
Birding today at Chatfield Arboretum with Lynn Wilcoxson's DFO group we saw 3 Harris's sparrows, 1 adult and 2 first-winter birds. They were close together low to the ground in a bush near the north end outlet of the western-most pond, right near the trail. They cooperated for 10 minutes, then flew up into a tree above us in a beautiful display. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows, Boulder County
I still have 3 and perhaps 4 Harris's in the yard. Last year, a pair were here until May 9. They have come into gorgeous breeding plumage and sing often, Cheers, Pam Piombin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows, Boulder County
Hi all, I still have at least two and possibly three Harris's Sparrows coming to my feeding areas. Birders welcome, but call first as the best viewing is from inside. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows at Rocky Mtn. Arsenal
Along with the usual suspects at the feeding station at the arsenal (juncos, finches, house sparrow, American tree sparrows, white crown sparrows) there were at least two first year Harris's sparrows. I assumed it was the same bird, but when looking at the photos I took it seems to confirm at least two different individuals, as the chest markings are very different, but I never saw more than one at a time. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows - BCLP - Jeffco
After leaving Red Rocks this morning, I made a trip to Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP) this morning. Both the adult and 1st year Harris's Sparrows were feeding with a flock of American Tree Sparrows near the Boat Launch area. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows - BCLP - Jeffco
This afternoon around 4 I found both the first year and adult Harris's Sparrows at the Boat Launch area in Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP). They were with 2 Song Sparrows feeding on a bit of bare ground at the entrance to the parking lot. Along with some American Tree Sparrows, the birds were going from the willows to the bare ground at the edge of the parking lot near the entrance. At one point the adult and first year bird perched side-by-side --- too bad I didn't have a camera. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows - BCLP - Jeffco
I was able to locate the two Harris's Sparrows in Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP) this morning. The two were seen in the same places as reported previously. Both were with mixed flocks of sparrows - Tree, Song, White-crowned, and juncos. Adult Harris's Sparrow - along the edge of the road just east of the Boat Inspection site. 1st year Harris's Sparrow - in the area near the Boat Launch area along the lake shore. [cobirds] Harris's Sparrows - BCLP - Jeffco
After visiting Red Rocks, I made a foray through Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP) this morning. I saw two Harris's Sparrows - one an adult and the other a 1st year bird. Also had a good look at a female Prairie Falcon. Along the North Road (left after the stop sign on entering BCLP), about 100 yards past the the Boat Inspection Shed at Whitetail Picnic Area, I observed a mixed lock of sparrows on the south edge of the road. The majority were Tree Sparrows with a few Song and a juvenile White-crowned or two. As I watched from my car, a beautiful adult Harris's Sparrow flew down and joined in the feeding along side the road. The 2nd Harris's was just east of the Boat Launch area along the lake shore. I had parked in the large parking lot just west of the Boat Launch and was walking along the shoreline of the lake looking for a Stub-tailed Wren I had seen the evening before. I only had a glimpse of the Stub-tailed Wren flying from one shrubby area to another on the shoreline the evening before. Didn't get a good enough look to call the bird anything other than a Stub-tailed Wren. While walking the lake shoreline hoping to refind the wren, the 1st year Harris's Sparrow flew across the trail, then perched near the top of a shrub for some great looks. This is the same area we had a Harris's last year and a White-throated Sparrow this fall. No wren but 2 Harris's Sparrows for the morning. Seems like the area around the Boat Launch is a good spot to look for sparrows in the winter. The female Prairie Falcon was perched on a low post near the top of the dam above Mountain View. She was quite cooperative and sat perched on the pole while I studied her through the car window. She was still perched in the same spot after I turned around and left.
