[cobirds] Local birds, JeffCo and Arapahoe
It continues to be pretty sweet on the back deck this morning at Ken Caryl Valley, JeffCo. The bright morning sun clears the layer of passing rain clouds and lights up the trees like green fire. And in comes the tide of tanagers, orioles and grosbeaks to the feeders. This morning I estimated 20 Western Tanagers, and counted 5 Bullock's Orioles and 2 Black-headed Grosbeaks. It was glorious. The proportion of female tanagers has increased to near 50%. A Mountain White-crowned Sparrow was singing in the front yard, and looking very dapper. I mostly get the Gambel's form at Ken Caryl Valley, and have only had a small number of Mountain White-crownedds, although they are regular. But I see them later than the migrant Gambel's at Ken Caryl, like now, after May 20. 5 Evening Grosbeaks showed up in the tops of the backyard trees. This was my 7th May record for the yard in 8 springs there. A female Lazuli was also present. Yesterday a Tennessee Warbler was along Massey Draw in Ken Caryl Valley, along with a Hammond's Flycatcher. Yesterday I saw a Rock Wren at the Littleton Cemetery, Arapahoe. Rock Wren is a rare spring migrant in this part of town. I like to bird in peace at the cemetery, and this was my 121st species for the hotspot (after 1197 checklists I've submitted there). 122 species have been reported for the hotspot. I'm missing Nor. Harrier (one report)... Yesterday a Black-and-white Warbler was along Massey Draw at Ken Caryl Valley, JeffCo. A Blackpoll Warbler was in elms at the SW end of Littleton Cemetery, Arapahoe. This morning a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak was at Wingate South Park, JeffCo, well upstream of the pond, where a Black Phoebe continued. At Ken Caryl Valley I had my first local Least Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler, Swainson’s Thrush, black-headed Grosbeak, and Western Tanager. Smuckers Grape Jelly has been deployed at the feeding station. [cobirds] Local birds: JeffCo and Arapahoe
I have been remiss in not posting more to CoBirds over the summer, but I hope to get back on track. Maybe others like me who have not posted much lately can make an effort to do so now and again. Let's keep it lively. An early *Clay-colored Sparrow* was at Massey Draw in Ken Caryl Valley (no public access), JeffCo this morning, along with the first migrant *Chipping Sparrows* I've had near my home this season. Interestingly, there are no other JerffCo records of Clay-colored entered in eBird for the 2nd week of August. So that makes an August 11 detection kind of special. On Aug 9 a female *Orchard Oriole* made a brief visit to my yard at Ken Caryl Valley, fitting a pattern with 3 prior detections there from late July to mid-August. On Aug 9 a single *Pygmy Nuthatch *was in a pine at St. Mary Church in Littleton, ARA. This was my first for Littleton. It flew off to the north and was no doubt a post-breeding dispersant.
