[cobirds] Mew Gull (Larimer)

2016-11-20 Thread Nicholas Komar
A first-cycle Mew Gull was with the gull throng along the north shore of Lake
Loveland yesterday at dusk. A seasonally rare Mountain Bluebird was nearby in
the trees along the beach. Here is a photo of the gull with a Ring-billed Gull
of the same age.

[cobirds] Mew Gull, Larimer

2015-12-10 Thread David Wade
Greetings birders,

An adult Mew Gull was foraging on the ice at the south end of Douglas
Lake/Reservoir north of Ft Collins today. I assume this is the same one
Andy Bankert first reported and Dave Leatherman caught a glimpse of 5 or 6
days ago. It was actively searching the ice for little tidbits of food
trapped in the ice, at least that's my take of it. It was one of the first
few gulls I looked at and easy to identify because it's white crescents
just jumped out at me. I also saw 3 - 5 Bonaparte's Gulls that ebird
flagged as rare, late I assume.

[cobirds] Mew Gull (Larimer)

2014-04-18 Thread Nick Komar
The Horseshoe Lake gull hangout in Loveland did not disappoint this evening.
Gulls observed from the west side (Engelman Place) included:
California Gull (315- all adult but 2)
Franklin's Gull (40 pink-breasted adults)
Ring-billed Gull (20-mostly immatures)
Herring Gull (5 including 1 adult, 1 3rd cycle, 3 1st cycle)
Thayer's Gull (1 adult, 1 pale 3rd cycle)
MEW GULL (1 1st cycle)

Other birds of note:
American Avocet-3
American White Pelican -110
White-faced Ibis - 22

At dusk, most of the gulls moved from the shallow inlet area to roost in the
center of the lake. The Mew Gull flew off with Ring-billed Gulls towards Lake
Loveland. The ibis flock arrived at dusk and circled the gull flock in the lake
center, seemingly intent to join the roost. Finally they actually alighted on
the water with the gulls! Of course, when they realize

Hit Lake Loveland this morning with Nick Komar. Very cold but rewarding. Among
the highlights, 5 lesser black-backed gulls, same number of California gulls, 2
thayers gulls, and one Mew gull. Also saw a lone pelican and one bald eagle.
