Birders
Tammy spotted 3 large groups of cranes flying south very high just now. At
least 100 birds.

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes, Jeffco

2015-10-12 Thread Kay Niyo
Just heard and then counted about 40 sandhills flying S over Hwy 93 just
west of N Table Mt. They kept circling as if looking for a spot to land,
but kept going south toward Golden conversing as they flew. Such cool
birds.

Re: [cobirds] Sandhill Cranes--Jeffco

2012-10-05 Thread Norm Lewis

We had two flocks of about fifty each pass over Barr Lake yesterday during our
monthly museum birding outing. They were found in the usual way; heard first
and then seen. It is remarkable how much carrying power that call has.

While on the subject- the songbird activity at Barr Lake (much walking both
directions from the Visitor Center plus a couple of hours below the dam) was
practically nil- a few yellow-rumps, a couple of solitaires and little else.
The cranes were a treat, and there are many good raptors working the area,
especially harriers of all sexes and ages. Barr Puddle (it can hardly be
described as anything else at this point) has hundreds of western grebes and a
few lingering cormies and pellies. We ran into Doug Faulkner, who reported
seeing some dowitchers, but we were unable to find them. A few killdeer were
the only shorebirds. We did have a possible winter wren below the dam along
the ditch, but it gave us the usual totally unsatisfactory milli-second view.
They are seen there most winters.

Nathan, perhaps you can explain why the cranes' calls carry so effectively?
