[cobirds] Spring counts
We have revived the Spring Counts that have gone on for 42 years -- starting in 1980. Here's the list, with some leaders particularly asking for participants. I hope you can go on one of them. [cobirds] Spring Counts - ANC Cat (Jeffco) & RMA NWR (Adams)
We had terrific birds on our two Spring counts last weekend For the Audubon Nature Center trails, we counted 72 species, and on the 'Drive Around' from Waterton to Roxborough Park Road, we counted 41 species; all told on the two, 83 species. Lots of swallows (630), 128 House Wrens, & 124 Yellow Warblers. Only 3 species of warbler. Most surprising: on the prairie south of Titan Road, an Osprey perched on a power pole, and below it on a fence line, a Bobolink sang. At Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, we had whopping 117 species, about 4200 birds. This included 1900 swallows, 830 sparrows (268 of them rolling flocks of Lark Buntings), only 50 House Wrens and 39 Yellow Warblers; 7 species of warbler, including a Black-throated Green & 2 Northern Waterthrushes. The afore-reported Vermilion Flycatcher, and a Summer Tanager. All the rarities but the one in places not open to the public. [cobirds] Spring Counts - Audubon Nature Center trails (Jefferson) & RMArsenal NWR (Adams)
Swallow dominated our spring counts. As we walked along the Audubon Center trails on Saturday they streamed over and over and over, all headed downstream, all too high to identify. Our estimate came up with 7 85 but we think we underestimated. Sunday at Rocky Mtn Arsenal we also saw large flocks sailing all over the refuge, again mostly too high or too far away to identify. On both Saturday and Sunday we IDd 5 species - no Banks. We finished on Saturday by watching a Prairie Falcon perched atop a power pole, plucking feathers off a Western Meadowlark & consuming it. The developer for Sterling Ranch reportedly exterminated the prairie dogs in the colony on South Roxborough Road -- we saw none -- but we saw three Burrowing Owls. (We talked to a woman who saw 7 there on Thursday.) Along the trails we counted 25 Yellow-breasted Chats, 121 Yellow Warblers, but only 83 House Wrens. Total species, 81-- higher than for most of our spring counts. For Sunday I don't yet have a list -- A. J. Gest kept it for us and has to compile it. Highlights however included 4 Northern Waterthrushes, a Tennesee Warbler confirmed by excellent photographs by Prat Pratyaydipta; 3 Stilt Sandpipers & 2 Long-billed Dowitchers, and an Eastern Phoebe that's taken up residence along the Highline Canal. Lots of towhees, both Green-tailed & Spotted. Hugh Kingery Franktown, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
