[cobirds] White-winged Crossbills (Larimer)
On Sunday afternoon, July 23, 2023, there were two White-winged Crossbills along the Laramie River Rd close to Chamber Lake. The pin of the eBird checklist marks the location of the crossbills. https://ebird.org/checklist/S14546168 Nick Komar Fort Collins CO -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] White-winged Crossbills - Larimer
Michael Kiessig and I drove to Fort Collins this morning to look for the White-winged Crossbills in Grandview Cemetery. We found them in the SE corner in a snowbank. We watched them for a number of minutes from about 20 yards away as they moved up and down from the snowbank to a split rail fence. Finally they flew up into the tree branches and then flew into the nest tree with the female leading the way. It was around 9:15 a.m. when we spotted them. Thanks to Dave Leatherman for keeping the birding community informed. [cobirds] White-winged Crossbills, Larimer
Just a quick note to say that I just saw at least one pair (one yellow and one pink) of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins, Larimer, west end of Mountain Avenue. They were with a group of about a dozen Red Crossbills, feeding in Colorado Blue Spruce in Section E. They were also seen for a time on the ground with eating snow. If you find the flock (Section E is roughly just north of dead-center (sorry, let's say "middle" instead) of the cemetery, and can watch them for at least 45 minutes, my bet is you will see them come to the ground for frozen water every so often. Watch for one crossbill to initiate this by flying down from the very top of a cone-laden tree to a lower branch along the outside edge, then further down, etc. Eventually the whole flock seems to follow suit and you can get great looks while they "bite" the snow.
