Re: [cobirds] Chico Basin

2021-03-09 Thread Patrick O'Driscoll
Chuck and Donna --

If I might interject here. I'm not a "member" at Chico Basin, but I've been
on the emailing list of Ranchlands (aka Box T Partners), the ranching
leaseholder at Chico Basin and the folks who run the birding program, for a
while now.
Last week, Monday, March 5, they sent word that birding is reopening to
general public visitors like us (those who are not already "members") on
March 15. Here's the message I received:

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your patience as we have thought through our approach to
birding at the Chico. The interest this year has been unprecedented! We
will be opening to day visitors starting *March 15*. The fees will remain
the same ($15 per person), and check-in will be as it was historically. The
kiosk will be moved just outside of the main headquarters cattle guard by
March 15 and sign in and out will be in person. We will provide all the
necessary sanitation measures to do our part to continue to eliminate the
spread of Covid.

We have also decided to open our annual birding membership to 15 additional
members. This will be first come first serve. If you are interested please
email me directly.

Thanks again for your interest and support!

Esther

I assume this went to all on their emailing list, or perhaps to those
who've indicated in some way that they're birders. (I once volunteered
there several years ago for one of the cleanup days around the banding
station and other spots.)

This indicates essentially the same arrangement as pre-pandemic. The only
change is that the kiosk has been moved out of the ranch HQ yard.

Here's what I did: I gave them a call and got on the waiting list last
summer, and then got an email offering me the opportunity to purchase the
membership last week. I was surprised because she said sometimes it can
take over a year to hear back. The membership gives you access to the
property and per the info I just received, you can bring up to 5 guests but
they all have to be in your vehicle. Each guest must purchase a day pass

RE: [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch El Paso and Pueblo Counties Closed to Birding and Birders

2015-05-02 Thread Bill Maynard
Duane,

You have posted incorrect information. The electric fence at Chico HQ is to
keep lifestock in a selected pasture for a short period of time and it is not
intended to be a restriction for birders. Grab the plastic handle and unhook
the electric cord, drive across and reattach. At different times there will be
electric fences in various locations but they are all intended to delineate
pastures not restrict access. The fee you mention is correct, but it has been
this price for over five years and it is $10 with groups of 5 or more with a
leader plus there is an optional yearly fee too. School groups, with prior
arrangement with the education staff, is still free to school groups and the
instruction is excellent.

Birding and Birders

I went to Chico Basin today to try my luck at a little birding. I found that
the price of admission has gone up to $15.00 and the access has been restricted
to just the bird-banding area. I used to enjoy access to the entire complex,
but the ponds area and headquarters area is now closed to birding. The road is
roped off to keep the cattle in and keep the birders out.

If you have a long drive to get there (like I did) you might consider stopping
somewhere else that still allows access to Birders.

RE: [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch posts from yesterday

2012-04-24 Thread Lynda Ackert

Brandon,

I for one thank you for posting early in the day. Although my
husband and I cannot always chase...when we can, we try! Truth be
told...when people can and choose not to post early in the day it drives
us crazy. After all, the main reason we follow the cobirds group is so
that we can chase!

THANKS FOR POSTING EARLY BRANDON!!

Subject: [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch posts from yesterday
To: cobirds@googlegroups.com

Hi all,
Since I received e-mails from people asking is there any point to post
sightings early in the morning from Chico Basin Ranch, that most people
wouldn't go chase, like Black-throated Gray Warbler and Northern Parula. The
main reason I posted early, is to let the word out that there are interesting
migrants currently at Chico, so everyone who reads the post early enough (who
might be wanting to know, if there might be birds around today), can perhaps go
out to their local migrant spots, and maybe find more interesting migrants. I
know very
few people will actually chase a bird at Chico, the day it is found, though I
think it is important to let cobirds know, when interesting migrants are
around. Hopefully this explains it. I did hear one person did see the
Kentucky Warbler fairly late in the afternoon yesterday!
Some rare migrants seem to be coming through right now, and I'm guessing it
will be a very interesting weekend on the eastern plains of Colorado, with the
unsettled weather.
