[cobirds] CSR banding, El Paso Co, Tues.

2018-09-04 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

No rarities to report today from Clear Spring Ranch, but birds did arrive in a
big way just after dawn. Waves of sparrows could be seen coming over the
fields, and into the brush, (and my nets). I had
125 birds in bags in less than 90 minutes.

The big number was Chipping Sparrows (no surprise - when they come in, they
come in together!) 108 banded. Also 10 Clay-colored Sparrows, 2 Brewers
Sparrows,
6 Lark Sparrows, 4 Savannah Sparrows, 4 Lincoln/s Sparrows, a Green-tailed
Towhee, and only a handful of Yellow and Wilson’s warblers. Today was for
Sparrows.
148 birds banded today. Whew.

Happy Migration,

Steve Brown

[cobirds] Piping Plover still at Prewitt Reservoir (Washington County)

2018-09-04 Thread W. Robert Shade III
Steve Kingswood and I spent a couple hours at Prewitt today. It seems like
the height of fall migration for shorebirds (16 species) with an estimated
150 Stilt Sandpipers and 3 Pectoral Sandpipers. The Piping Plover was on
the dry sand close to the first area you see in the southwest end north
side. It does not have orange on the bill in basic plumage but the very
light color and yellow legs make the ID certain. Black Terns everywhere.

The northern shore of Jackson Reservoir has a 100 yards of shoreline
exposed with fewer numbers than at Prewitt, mostly Baird's, Least, and 6
Perctoral Sandpipers. No Buff-breasted.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Barr Lake Station, 9/4/18

2018-09-04 Thread Meredith . McBurney
Lots of activity today - even with a brief closing mid-morning for wind, we
banded 77 birds. Like Ira Sander's front yard, we had our first Nashville
Warbler and Green-tailed Towhee today, plus a lovely Ovenbird. Here's the
breakdown of the 77 new:

Western Wood Pewee 1
House Wren 4
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 8
Nashville Warbler 1
Yellow Warbler 5
Townsend's Warbler 1
Ovenbird 1
Common Yellowthroat 3
Wilson's Warbler 48
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 1
Song Sparrow 2

We will be open 6 days per week (closed Mondays), weather permitting,
through October 14. We are opening nets at 6:30 and should have birds back
at the station by 7:15. We will close most days by about 11:30 (closing
earlier now because of heat). School groups arrive most weekdays at about
9:30. The best time to visit (fewest people, most birds) is before 9:30
weekdays and Sundays.

Come visit!

[cobirds] Bent county --- Carolina Wren

2018-09-04 Thread 'Mark Peterson' via Colorado Birds
COBirders,
Early this morning I made a quick stop at Van's Grove
(https://coloradocountybirding.org/BySite.aspx?SiteID=1092) and along with a
handful of mostly migrants I heard a CAROLINA WREN singing from the northeast.
If you want to look for this bird, there is a two-track that goes along the
east side of Van's Grove and splits as you go north.  It was up the right fork
which parallels "Van's marsh" and the power lines.  The bird was between the
third and four power poles.

[cobirds] Timnath Reservoir rarities-possible Stint - Larimer

2018-09-04 Thread Nicholas Komar
In addition to the Buff-breasted Sandpiper, there were several other rare birds
sighted at Timnath reservoir this afternoon (Sep 4). A pair of Caspian Terns
rested on the south shoreline, one adult and one juvenile. An over-summering
Greater white-fronted goose was among Canada geese in the northeast corner.
Also in the northeast corner were two Cassin’s Kingbird, and a Gray flycatcher,
first reported yesterday by Andy Bankert.

And finally, as the light faded this evening in the northeast corner, I noticed
an odd Sandpiper that to me resembled a juvenile Semipalmated with a very short
bill. I think this is a possible juvenile Red-necked Stint. If I refind it, I
will try to photograph it and explain why it may be a Stint in this venue. A
Stint would be a vagrant from Asia, and a first state record, if corroborated.
