[cobirds] Immature Harris's Sparrow at Monte Vista Refuge

2018-11-13 Thread mvjohnski
Well the snow and cold seem to have slowed down the birds a bit. Very few
cranes around the Valley and only saw 2 this morning on the 1S road east of
the 3E.

Home Lake is nearly all frozen, except for a small pool where Canada Geese,
American Wigeon and other ducks are keeping it open. A Kingfisher was
perched along the canal and a Great Blue Heron (yesterday). It was 5 below
zero this morning!

At the 8S observation turnout at the Monte Vista Refuge, was an
immature Harris's Sparrow (Rio Grande County). We only have a handful of
records for the San Luis Valley. Check it out and look for it in the brushy
areas.

Sometimes it seems that when I leave my camera at home, I am sure to see
something cool. Well it happened last Friday near Fort Garland when a
Northern Pygmy-owl flew into a nearby tree. All I could do was look and
appreciate it and remind myself to take the camera as if it were like
dressing up. Unfortunately, the owl was on a private ranch.

It also was a day to start thinking about Christmas Bird Counts. They are
not too far ahead.

Enjoy the birds!

[cobirds] Blackburnian Warbler - SW Longmont

2018-11-13 Thread Scott E. Severs
This morning at 8am I observed a 1st winter Blackburnian Warbler in conifer
trees east of Airport Road along Dry Creek Greenway (Kristen Schall
Greenspace), where a spur trail leads north to Staghorn Drive.
Another non-Yellow-rumped Warbler (sharp chip) was also present in the pine
crown that I didn't have time to ID before I had to leave.

[cobirds] Palm Warbler, Scoters - S Platte Res, JeffCo

2018-11-13 Thread Tim Mitzen
Hello!

This morning at South Platte Reservoir, Lindsay Purifoy and I had a Palm
Warbler near the small parking lot on the SW corner. It was
skulking mainly in Rabbitbrush, dried thistle and a very small juniper
nearby. Lots of birders were out and others got to see it as well and get
pics. On the reservoir both female-plumaged Surf and Black Scoters
continue.

Cheers,
Tim Mitzen

[cobirds] Goshawk, Douglas

2018-11-13 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
A Northern Goshawk swooshed through our yard yesterday afternoon. Most of the
birds feeding ignored it -- jays, juncos, etc. It made 2-3 passes, then
disappeared.

[cobirds] Hungry and cranky Bald Eagle, Arapahoe Platte River

2018-11-13 Thread Brian Johnson
Today while out for a walk along the river I was five minutes from my car
and the end of my walk near the Bowls underpass when I saw a Bald Eagle and
got quite the show. The eagle, a full grown adult, came flying over the
river chasing a Canada Goose. The goose was either knocked out of the air
by the eagle or forced out of the air into the river, either way I have not
seen this before. The eagle did not follow up it's attack, probably since
the goose was now with others in the river, and circled around the river.
As it was doing this the eagle spotted the local Red-tailed Hawk and
apparently decided the local hawk should not be around and flew in pursuit,
successfully chasing of the hawk. The eagle finally calmed down and landed
in a tree allowing some so-so photos. Eventually the eagle flew off, giving
me quite the show. It's winter and the eagles have returned.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow at CU South Campus Tennis Complex

2018-11-13 Thread Matt Hofeditz
At around 10:30 this morning, while exploring the CU South Campus trail in
Boulder, I came across a Golden-crowned Sparrow loosely associating with a
flock of American Tree Sparrows. It was directly south of the parking lot
for the South Campus Tennis Complex, in the willows thickets that extend
along the east side of the trail, occasionally flying down onto the trail
itself. It was calling often, and would perch up on top of the willows
making for some great views. Photos are on my eBird checklist.

Good birding,

There is now an eBird "stakeout hotspot" pin marker where Scott found this
rarity.
It may show up on the hotspot map today or not until tomorrow.
