[CODE4LIB] Systems - to librarian or not to librarian?

2023-02-21 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
Late to the conversation, but my two cents:

I would remove or make "MLIS a plus" . Like you, I've also noted the
challenge that Libraries are facing while recruiting candidates with
technical skills. Additionally, I am unaware of any library school that
actually teaches library systems technology. As far as I can tell, most
library systems folks learn on the job- I've certainly done my part in
training library employees about how authentication and systems work and
interact with each other.

[CODE4LIB] Digital Asset Management systems

2022-08-26 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
Hi:

We are looking at Digital Asset Management systems and I am curious what
systems other institutions chose and why. If you can, please let me know. I
am happy to compile results and send to the group. If you would prefer your
response be anonymized or not included, let me know.

Thank you all so much!

[CODE4LIB] Useful stats

2022-05-05 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
In our Annual Report, our ERL has always provided a detailed list of database
/resource usage. It is a ponderous pile of figures which few actually review.

I'm looking at presenting usage data differently this year, and wondering how
others may have approached this.
Total ebooks, or articles downloaded- number of logins or searches to our
discovery layer...?

Any inspiration out there?

Thanks!

Re: [CODE4LIB] Email ticket system

2022-05-04 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
We've been using LibAnswers and it hasn't been working. Every email sent to the
system becomes a new ticket (even if it is from the same people on the same
topic with the same subject line, etc.) From what Springshare has said, it
isn't Springshare's fault. They have said that the way our email server manages
headers is cutting off vital information that LibAnswers uses to decide if the
ticket is new or not. Our IT department disagrees. Springshare's solution has
been to tell us to only respond to the ticket within the LibAnswers interface.
Not realistic.

The system seems to work fine when it is a single reference librarian chatting
with a single end user. But for some reason, the multiple stakeholders aspect
of our tech issues just doesn't work.

We had ZenDesk prior but the cost was prohibitive and they kept changing the
cost structure, and charging more for less services.

Regardless, we are now looking for a new ticketing system.

Greetings everyone -

We're looking at implementing an email ticket system for our Library (well,
technically we're an archive, despite the name.) We would be interested in
hearing what systems other institutions are using and their experiences with
them. Right now, our strongest candidate is LibAnswers from SpringShare. So
far, most of the other systems we've looked at are geared towards IT or
Business/CRM.

As we've been investigating, a couple of important pieces of context that have
cropped are:

   - We are an independent unit at the University of Michigan. A lot of
special collections / archives tend to be part of a larger library at their
respective institutions, but we are not.
   - As an archive, we are non-circulating

Thanks!

Matt,
We use a SharePoint list for this. Its only for internal use, not for patrons.
I guess it could be modified to be used by the public though. Staff click a
link and submit a webform and SharePoint sends an email notice to any technical
services staff who subscribe to notifications. We've made some tweaks to it
over time and it actually works fairly well. If that interests you I would be
happy to talk off-list

But... first sentence - in bold- states that they are not getting rid of
customer support for stand alone EzProxy- and that is reiterated throughout the
communication. Your highlighted portion mentions sales alone.

I read this as, if new libraries want EZProxy, they can get it- just hosted.
For those of us who already have it as a stand alone- no worries, they will
continue to support.

I just want to make sure I am understanding the question. when you say file
sharing/transfer do you mean):

1.) File transmission software like cyberduck or (as Mike Kastellec just
suggested something Like Globus -- which looks pretty awesome!)
2.) Or an electronic lab notebook for shared experimentation and research like
https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flabarchives.comdata=01%7C01%7Celizabeth.leonard%40SHU.EDU%7Cf5d9d1ced7314d695d6908d799e48794%7C51f07c2253b744dfb97ca13261d71075%7C1sdata=iLEs4ZpeQXh%2FNwRf3BiNM83BpLFwk%2F%2Bfq%2FdUpMVCa%2Fk%3Dreserved=0
3.) Or the storage infrastructure cyberduck/Globus/FileZilla would connect to?
a.)Backblaze, Onedrive, university hosted SFTP site, etc

(it seems like you mean 1, but I want to be sure and I already wrote out the
rest of the email so there you go :)

If you are looking for file sharing/transmission software (1)

Cyberduck is great -- we use it to connect to our backblaze b2 accounts and
manage a decent amount of digital collections data and has a good number of
integrations that can help to connect to a large number of cloud providers and
as well

Filezilla and WinSCP are also good and have similar feature sets to Cyberduck.

If you are looking for a an ELN(2) Harvard put together a good resource
comparing a number of them here:
https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdatamanagement.hms.harvard.edu%2Felectronic-lab-notebooksdata=01%7C01%7Celizabeth.leonard%40SHU.EDU%7Cf5d9d1ced7314d695d6908d799e48794%7C51f07c2253b744dfb97ca13261d71075%7C1sdata=kSh03EkTM6o7QTq%2Fy5YZA7esAM5HsIdtatnNqHNARJU%3Dreserved=0

If you mean file storage infrastructure (3)

Your organization probably has pretty strict rules about where your researchers
can place/share any non-public data (HIPPA, FERPA, PII, etc..) and would have
guidelines for others types of data -- I know ours does
(https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fits.wsu.edu%2Fdocuments%2F2018%2F06%2Fwsu-cloud-acceptable-use-matrix.pdf%2Fdata=01%7C01%7Celizabeth.leonard%40SHU.EDU%7Cf5d9d1ced7314d695d6908d799e48794%7C51f07c2253b744dfb97ca13261d71075%7C1sdata=Q33W3zggaAHKJG9AkhhTV4H3OJ3NEWYMcRin2iUnYEU%3Dreserved=0
). I would look to your central IT department to see if they have any
agreements for cloud providers for the specific type of data you are thinking
might be included. In the past, at least from my most recent experience, most
cloud providers need a separate agreement above the most basic OneDrive,
box.com agreement and comes at a higher price.

We are hoping for reasonably priced solutions (I know... secure, reasonably

[CODE4LIB] OpenAthens?

2019-02-11 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
I'd love to chat with anyone who has had a successful rollout of OpenAthens,
especially those who run OCLC's WMS.

Kind of feeling my way through this process and looking to learn from those who

[CODE4LIB] IBISworld issues

2018-10-11 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
Hi all:

Hi all:

We can't get to IBISWorld anymore- either with proxy or without. When we type
in https://www.ibisworld.com or http://www.ibisworld.com/ we get the error
message:

This page isn't working

clients1.ibisworld.com redirected you too many times.

  *   Try clearing your
cookies<https://support.google.com/chrome?p=rl_error=en-US>.
ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS
(Clearing cookies doesn't fix it).

IBISWorld seems to think it is related to our transition to OpenAthens, but I
don't have an Athenized link for the resource, nor, as far as I am aware, do
the OpenAthens folk (apparently IBISWorld and the OA people are playing phone
tag).

Has anyone else encountered the error and has some idea of what is going on?

Thanks!

Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce that an Memorandum of Understanding has been
formally executed between Code4Lib and CLIR / DLF for the fiscal continuity and
sponsorship of the Code4Lib annual conferences and the Code4Lib Journal. As
Chair of the Fiscal Sponsorship Working Group, I have co-signed the MOU with
Bethany Nowviskie, Executive Director of DLF.

There were 158 votes cast for the MOU, with 154 in favor and 4 opposed. 95
individuals asked to be listed on the wiki as publicly endorsing the MOU.

This is a significant moment of collaboration and sustainability for Code4Lib,
and I believe I can speak for the other members of the committee in saying that
we are honored to have been entrusted to work on behalf of this community.
Thank you to Galen, Coral, Chad, Carol, and Morgan from the committee and to
Bethany and Sharon from CLIR / DLF.

I have attached the MOU for your convenience, and this will be placed in the
Code4Lib wiki.

Cheers,
Tim

Subject: [CODE4LIB] Streaming Audio Files on Digital Commons

Hello everyone,

We have been streaming .mp3 audio files on Digital Commons (bepress) from our
own streaming server using streaming software from Wowza since last year. In
the past, we have had no problem streaming audio and video files, but we are
now experiencing issues with .mp3 audio files only.

The only way we can get our audio files to work consistently across desktop
browsers is to revert to the flash protocol (rtmp). When we try to use an
HTML5-compatible url (using the http protocol and a playlist.m3u8 extension at
the end) the files have intermittent and idiosyncratic issues.

In an attempt to fix these issues, we upgraded to the most recent version of
Wowza (4.7.0) last week. Yesterday we were able to resolve some of these
issues by enabling a previously disabled property on Wowza.

Has anyone else experienced issues streaming video or audio files on Digital
Commons or in another platform using Wowza and JWPlayer? If so, I'd love to
hear some details as we try to troubleshoot. We do not want to use the flash
urls as the main streaming url in light of the impending death of flash.

We still believe that many, if not all, of the issues might be resolved if
bepress upgrades to JWPlayer 7.12.2, which is the most recent stable version of
the player. Digital Commons is currently using JWPlayer 7.8.4., which is
several upgrades out of date.

I appreciate any help you can give me.

I concur with Tim's assessment. If folks have limited funds for professional
development, they are less likely to become a member of an association that
requires them to join another organization as a prerequisite to membership.

I would strongly oppose any requirement that forces membership to ALA / LITA.
This is unnecessary and an expense that is a personal choice and often not
reimbursed by libraries. I also think it would servely limit who is willing to
host / lead conferences.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Experience migrating to Alma or OCLC WMS?

2017-05-04 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
The challenge with WMS' Kb (and one that OCLC has struggled with and tried to
fix, to their credit) is that the vendors generally supply the eresource files
and they are not always accurate. They've taken great steps forward to allow
community users to edit these resources and keep those changes when vendors
send the (wrong) data again.

These theoretically perform similar functions but are different in their
strengths. CZ metadata is maintained algorithmically using data from many
sources and can be enriched by libraries (though changes can also be be lost
depending on what is going on). The CZ also contains many packages of
electronic resources and can be used to maintain packages for groups.
However, the CZ should not be seen as a substitute for OCLC as there are
quality issues and many records obviously don't have OCLC numbers. All the
same, it is one of the compelling features of Alma because it dramatically
improves and simplifies electronic resource management. Short version is that
OCLC is great for physical stuff and CZ is great for electronic stuff.

I am less enthusiastic about Alma ILL -- definitely not an area of strength.

Recently moved back to the NYC area and wondering if there's any meetups or a
local C4L chapter, or just who is around. I'm planning to attend DTL2016 (

[CODE4LIB] study about the ways new librarians learn to conduct scholarly research

2016-10-17 Thread Elizabeth Leonard
CROSS-POSTED, APOLOGIES FOR DUPLICATION

Dear colleagues,

We are conducting a study about the ways new librarians learn to conduct
scholarly research. We are interested in learning more your experiences as you
began to engage in research and publication, the resources to which you had
access as you were learning, and what was helpful in the research and
publication process.

We invite you to participate in our survey if you meet the following criteria:

* You are an academic librarian in the United States

* You are employed at an academic library with a tenure or promotion
system in which research is required for tenure or promotion

* You have either not yet earned tenure or promotion OR have been
tenured or promoted within the last three years

The survey will take about approximately 20 minutes to complete.

This project does not collect identifiable information and presents no risks to
participants. You may exit the survey at any time without submitting your
responses. More information about participation and confidentiality can be
found on the consent page at the beginning of the survey.
