If your readers say don't chew on it, but you edit it in spite?
Or if the comments say you're wrong, but you edit so you're right?

I think it should be OK to add your own stuff if you are so inclined.
But I also think it would be nice to have Peter as this years editor,
and allow him to cherry pick and organize the content as he sees fit.

Thank you all for making me actually spill my morning coffee.

Now only to film a barbershop quartet of librarians singing it via YouTube.

Re: [CODE4LIB] auto-anthologizing

2007-02-15 Thread Binkley, Peter
I was thinking of this as similar to the code4libcon process: put up
lots of proposals, set some kind of target size, and open up voting,
maybe with some tampering by the editor(s) to make sure the final
product has some balance. I had thought about an All-Star Game rule as
well: every blog in Planet Code4Lib gets at least one posting (in the
interests of boosting sales).

So I don't see any problem with nominating your own stuff (as I did,
indirectly), but I'd rather not see nominations removed - you may not be
the best judge of your own stuff, after all. But maybe we could allow
author's comments on the nomination list (Please don't vote for this,
that one's better) to guide the process. Can that wiki do tables? I'd
like to add a wordcount column as well (people can use the FF wordcount
extension) so we can get a sense of the size of the thing.

Wait, so should I not have been adding posts from various blogs myself?
I thought the idea was that any of us could nominate posts from others'
blogs by adding them to the wiki, and then we'd all vote... or did you
just mean that you think Peter (or The Editors, Whomever They Shall Be)
should have ultimate say of which voted-on posts go into the final
collection, and in what order, etc.?

[CODE4LIB] xISBN moved

2007-02-15 Thread Eric Hellman

The xISBN service has now moved out of OCLC Research and is now being
supported by the Openly Informatics Division of OCLC. For more
information about about the xISBN service, please visit
http://www.worldcat.org/affiliate/webservices/xisbn/app.jsp

There was a delay in the transfer caused by the snowstorm in Ohio.

We have one problem reported- a poorly documented feature (to
redirect to opacs) was not implemented in the replacement service; we
expect this to be fixed shortly. If you want updates on this issue,
please subscribe to the xidentifier-l mailing list.

In looking at the usage patterns, we've noticed that a very small
number of users are trying to just suck up all the xISBN data using
the webservice. While this may have been reasonable when the data was
static, it is not appropriate now that the data is being frequently
updated. We are now able to supply the COMPLETE xISBN data file every
month to customers who need this for their application, if this
applies to you, please contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED]; one of
the national libraries is already working with us in this way.

Another usage pattern seems to be pulling data for the contents of a
library catalog; if you are interested in a batch-update facility,
please contact us.

Some uses appear to be very commercial. If you have a commercial
application not allowed by the existing terms and conditions for free
use, please contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a commercial
agreement.

The new web service is rated at 10 million requests per day, so don't
be afraid to send traffic to xISBN. If you expect to use more than
1,000 requests per day, you must contact us. The existing xml
response format does not allow for us to indicate in the response
whether an application over the limit or not without breaking it, and
we've chosen not to break anyone's application.

+1

I updated http://code4lib.org/wiki/Code4LibBlogAnthology

Alas, this is Sean Palmer's one-file wiki [1] meant for quick note
taking and brainstorming. It won't handle concurrent edits and
doesn't have a syntax for tables. I would suggest moving the content
to code4lib.org's drupal instance if you really want control over the
look and feel. Other people with accounts will be able to edit it. If
you do move it be sure to leave instructions on the wiki to the new
location.

I might lose a friend by suggesting this...but perhaps we could tag
things on delicious w/ say 'code4lib_anthology_2006'. This would
provide an indicator of who submitted it.
