[CODE4LIB] Sunday in Asheville
Folks, We have a fabulous slate of social activities lined up for this year's conference in Asheville (thanks to, well, y'all). But those of you arriving on Sunday will notice there are no planned outings that night! Oh noez! Well, I'm planning to spend my post-dinner time at the Thirsty Monk [1]. It's a half-mile from the conference hotel, so it's easily walkable/stumbleable. I hope to run into some of you folks there. If you're into Belgian beer and a different pub atmosphere, do join me. -Mike P.S. If you'd like to reach me via phone, my number is: the NJ area code beginning with seven, followed by the numerically lower Santa Monica (CA) area code, followed by the sum of the prior value added to the number of the beast, padded with one zero. 1. http://www.yelp.com/biz/thirsty-monk-pub-asheville
[CODE4LIB] exercising at code4libcon next week
code4libcon is about here, yay! I'm kinda in a fitness craze right now, and will be doing some training in Asheville. Monday night, 6:30pm, I'm going to the CrossFit Asheville gym - http://www.crossfitasheville.com/ I contacted them and they said that was a good time to come. I'll likely go back on Wednesday night at the same time. (dunno if they'll charge some fee, though). There were a couple of folks that mentioned interest, and I can carpool up to 3 others. If you've never done it before, now's not the time to start and I'm sure they'll only let experienced folks partake, but I imagine those curious about the insanity are welcome to spectate. Jogging - what say folks up for runs meet in the hotel lobby at 6:30am any day next week. I'm game for a relatively short run (2-3 miles) both Monday and Wednesday. I fleshed out a daily signup on the wiki. If it's too cold or treacherous out, I'll just hit the treadmill or rowing machine if they have it. http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/C4L2010_social_activities#Working_Out I'm still debating how many pushups folks must do at the Black Belt preconference, and which kata to teach ;) Erik
Re: [CODE4LIB] exercising at code4libcon next week
Personally for me, there is no weather where you cannot jog.According to the weather reports only two days look like rain (and I am sure it probably will not rain the whole day), and the temp is fine for running-not cold at all. So forget the gym. Also, I am up for a 6 to 8 mile run-get to see more of the town. /Ray Feb 21 Mostly Cloudy 48°/39° 10 % Mon Feb 22 Showers 48°/31° 50 % Tue Feb 23 Few Snow Showers 39°/31° 30 % Wed Feb 24 Sunny 42°/30° 10 % Thu Feb 25 Rain / Snow Showers 45°/35° 30 % -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:code4...@listserv.nd.edu] On Behalf Of Erik Hatcher Sent: Wednesday, February 17, 2010 10:05 AM To: CODE4LIB@LISTSERV.ND.EDU Subject: [CODE4LIB] exercising at code4libcon next week code4libcon is about here, yay! Hi Mike, the Thirsty Monk [1]. It's a half-mile from the conference hotel, so it's easily walkable/stumbleable. 1. http://www.yelp.com/biz/thirsty-monk-pub-asheville The Yelp entry has their address being 50 Commerce St, Asheville, NC 28801. However their website (http://www.monkpub.com/) has them at 92 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC 28801 (which is even closer to the conference hotel). Google maps now has Hookah Joe's at the 50 Commerce St address, so perhaps the Thirsty Monk has moved. They are not answering their phone (828-254-5470) this early, but I will try them later on to get clarification. I hope to run into some of you folks there. If you're into Belgian beer and a different pub atmosphere, do join me. Belgian beer is my favorite, so I plan on going (even if you are going to be there -- just teasing!). I didn't notice any Atomium on draft, though (previewing the beer menu is how I happened to notice the address discrepancy). -- Michael # Michael Doran, Systems Librarian # University of Texas at Arlington # 817-272-5326 office # 817-688-1926 mobile # do...@uta.edu # http://rocky.uta.edu/doran/ -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:code4...@listserv.nd.edu] On Behalf Of Michael J. Re: [CODE4LIB] Newcomer dinner reminder
I heard concerns from some vegetarians that all the slots are taken at vegetarian restaurants (maybe new restaurants have been added since I last looked though). Is there any way to make room for vegetarians at the vegetarian restaurants? Or maybe homeless vegetarians could put a new section for themselves at the bottom so some vets can see what kind of need there is for increased vegetarian dinner? Apart from the steakhouse, all of the remaining restaurants have vegetarian (and some vegan) options. Joyce, unfortunately the other veg restaurant I could find (Ophelia's World Cafe and Bar http://opheliasworldcafe.info/) is closed on Mondays. But, as others pointed out, most other restaurants have veggie options. If anyone else knows of a veg*n restaurant nearby that isn't on the list, by all means, please add it! Thanks, Becky

You might want to checkout Laughing Seed (which is most likely the best Vegetarian place in Asheville). My wife and I lived in Asheville for 7 years and ate their often. If it's too cold or treacherous out, I'll just hit the treadmill or rowing machine if they have it. http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/C4L2010_social_activities#Working_Out I'm still debating how many pushups folks must do at the Black Belt preconference, and which kata to teach ;) Erik -- Erik Mitchell, Ph.D. Assistant Director for Technology Services Z. Re: [CODE4LIB] Sunday in Asheville
Thanks for clarifying the address issue, Michael. And I think the Thirsty Monk has just the right stuff to help us puckheads deal with the lack of hockey being shown. Not to kick off an epic BEER VERSUS HOCKEY religious crusade. -Mike P.S. Beer.

[CODE4LIB] Atiz Pro Cameras?
Hi folks - any of you out there have an Atiz Pro? http://pro.atiz.com/ I'm wondering what kind of cameras to get for it. Of course, I want 5DMarkIIs, with a back up that I'll house in my camera bag, but that might be overkill... ;) Thanks! Declan

Re: [CODE4LIB] Sunday in Asheville
I sort of skimmed the emails in this thread and came to the conclusion that the Thirsty Monk and the Bier Garden were somehow the same place. They're not! So, if anyone's interested in BOTH beer and hockey, Julia's suggestion of the Bier Garden seems like a good one. I've added a link to the social activities page, if anyone's interested. http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/C4L2010_social_activities#Hockey_Pre-Pre-Conference On Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 4:32 PM, Fleming, Declan dflem...@ucsd.edu wrote: BEER -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:code4...@listserv.nd.edu] On Behalf Of Michael J. Re: [CODE4LIB] Sunday in Asheville
Ordinarily I'd join the Bier Garden crowd but I'm headed there for the Newcomer Dinner the day after. But maybe we can start a Tupac/Biggie Smalls kind of rivalry between the Bier Garden crowd and the Thirsty Monk crowd for the pre-pre-conference drinking? -Mike, a divider On Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 17:43, Andrew Darby darby.li...@gmail.com wrote: I sort of skimmed the emails in this thread and came to the conclusion that the Thirsty Monk and the Bier Garden were somehow the same place. [CODE4LIB] Van Departure list updated...
Hey Code4Lib attendees, Well I spend another day in Excel Hell seeing if we could squeeze anymore van runs..lol I'm sad to say, we could only add one van load to the list and it's early one.. I am very sad about it. ( But this does leave 4 slots open for those that want to leave extra early..so check it out to see if you want to do this...) We could really use 3 vans to get all the folks that seems to want to make that trip to the airport at same time on Thursday... But we don't. Sorry... :( Only thing I can do to help is recommend the following folks get together to see if they can share taxis or rides. Based on my calculation...I recommend that: Marquez, Stethers, Lamm, and Young see what they can do to share a ride at 12:15 pm on Thursday... Barrera, James, Rockliff, Reiss and Rochkind see what they can do to share a ride at 2:00 pm on Thursday... Hellman, Classen-Wilson, and Kome see what they can do to share a ride at 2:30 pm on Thursday And Gong, Ou, and Atzberger see what they can do to share a ride at 3:30 pm on Thursday. The rest is up to you... I'm going to look tomorrow to see if we can add a late run on Monday (I think I see a possibility there with those folks with a - in the ride share list last column...) Jill
