[CODE4LIB] Sunday in Asheville

2010-02-17 Thread Michael J. Giarlo
Folks,

We have a fabulous slate of social activities lined up for this year's
conference in Asheville (thanks to, well, y'all). But those of you
arriving on Sunday will notice there are no planned outings that
night! Oh noez! Well, I'm planning to spend my post-dinner time at
the Thirsty Monk [1]. It's a half-mile from the conference hotel, so
it's easily walkable/stumbleable.

I hope to run into some of you folks there. If you're into Belgian
beer and a different pub atmosphere, do join me.

-Mike

P.S. If you'd like to reach me via phone, my number is: the NJ area
code beginning with seven, followed by the numerically lower Santa
Monica (CA) area code, followed by the sum of the prior value added to
the number of the beast, padded with one zero.

[CODE4LIB] exercising at code4libcon next week

2010-02-17 Thread Erik Hatcher

code4libcon is about here, yay!

I'm kinda in a fitness craze right now, and will be doing some
training in Asheville.

Monday night, 6:30pm, I'm going to the CrossFit Asheville gym -
http://www.crossfitasheville.com/
I contacted them and they said that was a good time to come. I'll
likely go back on Wednesday night at the same time. (dunno if they'll
charge some fee, though). There were a couple of folks that mentioned
interest, and I can carpool up to 3 others. If you've never done it
before, now's not the time to start and I'm sure they'll only let
experienced folks partake, but I imagine those curious about the
insanity are welcome to spectate.

Jogging - what say folks up for runs meet in the hotel lobby at 6:30am
any day next week. I'm game for a relatively short run (2-3 miles)
both Monday and Wednesday. I fleshed out a daily signup on the wiki.
If it's too cold or treacherous out, I'll just hit the treadmill or
rowing machine if they have it.

http://wiki.code4lib.org/index.php/C4L2010_social_activities#Working_Out

I'm still debating how many pushups folks must do at the Black Belt
preconference, and which kata to teach ;)

Personally for me, there is no weather where you cannot jog.According to
the weather reports only two days look like rain (and I am sure it probably
will not rain the whole day), and the temp is fine for running-not cold at all.
So forget the gym. Also, I am up for a 6 to 8 mile run-get to see more of the
town. /Ray

I heard concerns from some vegetarians that all the slots are taken at
vegetarian restaurants (maybe new restaurants have been added since I last
looked though). Is there any way to make room for vegetarians at the
vegetarian restaurants? Or maybe homeless vegetarians could put a new
section for themselves at the bottom so some vets can see what kind of need
there is for increased vegetarian dinner?

 Hi everyone,

 please
look at the restaurant sign up
 list

 and
sign up for the restaurant of your choice.

Guidelines to keep in mind while making your choice:

   - Max of *8* per location
   - ID yourselves so we can get a good mix of new people and vets
   - New folks - n
  - c4l vets - v
   - One leader needed for each location (code4lib vets only - New people
   can skip this part)
  - Leader duties
 - Make reservations if required; otherwise make sure that the
restaurant can handle a group of 8 rowdy library coders
 - Herd folks from hotel to restaurant (know where you're going!)

There's at least one group that has people signed up but no one in the
leader slot. If there are any vets that want to step up and take the lead,
 I'd greatly appreciate it!

FYI - I have listed on the wiki to meet in the hotel lobby at 6 PM Monday
evening. People can meet up with their groups from there...

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll see all of you very soon!

Ooh! Ooh! I want to watch the hockey game! (As long as y'all won't throw

The Bier Garden is listed as a sports bar on Yelp, and their Web site says

[CODE4LIB] Thirsty Monk location solved [was: Sunday in Asheville]

2010-02-17 Thread Doran, Michael D
The Yelp entry has their address being 50 Commerce St, Asheville, NC
28801. However their website (http://www.monkpub.com/) has them at 92
 Patton Ave, Asheville, NC 28801

From Barry Bialik [ba...@monkpub.com]:

The addresses are the same building. The Pub is two stories
and each level fronts a different street with an interior
interconnecting staircase. The Belgian bar (50 Commerce)
opened first and then we expanded upstairs and opened the
American Craft part (92 Patton).

 Hi Mike,

the Thirsty Monk [1].  It's a half-mile from the conference

 it's easily walkable/stumbleable.

  1. http://www.yelp.com/biz/thirsty-monk-pub-asheville

The Yelp entry has their address being 50 Commerce St,
Asheville, NC 28801.  However their website
(http://www.monkpub.com/) has them at 92 Patton Ave,
Asheville, NC 28801 (which is even closer to the conference

[CODE4LIB] Van Departure list updated...

2010-02-17 Thread Jill Ellern
Hey Code4Lib attendees,

Well I spend another day in Excel Hell seeing if we could squeeze anymore van
runs..lol

I'm sad to say, we could only add one van load to the list and it's early
one.. I am very sad about it. ( But this does leave 4 slots open for those
that want to leave extra early..so check it out to see if you want to do
this...)

We could really use 3 vans to get all the folks that seems to want to make that
trip to the airport at same time on Thursday... But we don't. Sorry... :(

Only thing I can do to help is recommend the following folks get together to
see if they can share taxis or rides.

Based on my calculation...I recommend that:

Marquez, Stethers, Lamm, and Young see what they can do to share a ride at
12:15 pm on Thursday...

Barrera, James, Rockliff, Reiss and Rochkind see what they can do to share a
ride at 2:00 pm on Thursday...

Hellman, Classen-Wilson, and Kome see what they can do to share a ride at 2:30
pm on Thursday

And Gong, Ou, and Atzberger see what they can do to share a ride at 3:30 pm on
Thursday.

The rest is up to you...

I'm going to look tomorrow to see if we can add a late run on Monday (I think I
see a possibility there with those folks with a - in the ride share list last
column...)
