[CODE4LIB] Anyone with experience of SFX Rapid Service Indicator API?

2013-06-28 Thread Ronan McHugh
Hi all,

I'm working on an application that will interface with SFX via its Rapid
Service Indicator to check if full text for an item is available. I am having
trouble querying the API however. I scheduled the index build on our test
instance for last night. Today, I have tried querying the index with a number
of items that I know we have access to via SFX. However, I receive consistently
the response that the item was not found. I would like to be able to debug
this in some way, perhaps through looking at some log files, but I don't really
know where to start. Does anyone have any experience that could point me in the
right direction?

[CODE4LIB] same css, different servers, one breaks in IE

2013-06-28 Thread Ken Irwin
Hi folks,

I've been working on integrating some Bootstrap into our library website, and
I've stumbled on weird thing that I can't explain:

I'm using the basic bootstrap templates, straight out of the box with no
customization, and the CSS feature that compresses the header on narrow screens
doesn't work on IE(v9) on my library web server. But exactly the same code on
my personal server works just fine. Both sets of code work fine in Chrome and
Firefox. Both servers are some mix of Linux+Apache.

Why would the same css work on one server but not another?

I ran Fiddler to be sure that the css was actually being called, and it is.

I wonder if others will get the same results.

Working in IE:
Out of the box hero template:
http://alltrees.org/ken/bootstrap/docs/examples/hero.html
Just the responsive header (no JS, just relies on 2 css files):
http://www.alltrees.org/ken/bootstrap/docs/examples/top-nojs.html

Not working on IE:
http://www6b.wittenberg.edu/lib/test/bootstrap/docs/examples/hero.html
http://www6b.wittenberg.edu/lib/test/bootstrap/docs/examples/top-nojs.html

Any ideas? I'm mystified...

Thanks
Ken

[CODE4LIB] OJS Statistics

2013-06-28 Thread ago...@uic.edu
For those working on the OJS platform, how are you pulling your
monthly/quarterly statistics? I've just heard from my editor that he's
hand pulling download counts monthly, which is time consuming. It seems
like there must be an easier way.

I have not ever looked at the back end of OJS but post-ALA will be digging
around to find my log in, I'm sure it's here somewhere.

Appreciate any ideas!

Re: [CODE4LIB] same css, different servers, one breaks in IE

2013-06-28 Thread Josh Wilson
In looking quickly at your not working in IE example, it looks to me like
it does work in IE9 but not 8. So perhaps it works like you think it does,
only you're not seeing it because of IE's idiosyncrasies? Hope I'm
correctly understanding your question.

A few common IE gotchas, if you haven't tried these already or aren't
accustomed to messing with IE much (F12 for developer tools - actually lots
of good stuff here for checking the DOM, stylesheets, network):

*Be sure that IE is pretending to be the browser you think it is - check
the browser mode and document mode listed in the developer tools menu. IE
likes to switch modes for no good reason.
*IE can also be very aggressive about caching. There are cache settings you
can change in the developer tools but I find that they don't always work. A
full cache clear is sometimes what it takes to get the latest CSS update.

Another IE (8 and less, I believe) gotcha is it only processes 4095 rules
in a CSS file; you have to break large files into multiple chunks. More on

[CODE4LIB] Job: Applications Developer at University of Notre Dame

2013-06-28 Thread jobs
We are looking for another software developer to join the Digital Library
Technology Unit here at Notre Dame.

This morning I had 628 unread postings from jobs.code4lib.org. Now there will
be 1 more.

I have these job postings filterd separtely from the code4lib list. I largely
ignore them because I already have a job I love. Maybe you do too -- but I
hope not (for my own selfish reasons).

If you have any interest in or questions about this position please let me
know. [I'm all over the internets.](http://dan.brubakerhorst.com)

Here's the official job description:

preservation of unique library collections and campus research data. These
include areas such as research data visualizations, exhibit templates, image

foundation in creating polished feature rich applications as well as a high
aptitude for mastering new skills and technologies quickly. This position will
participate in cross departmental and organizational groups with partners from

directly from this partnership through solutions created for preserving data,
building rich discovery systems, managing descriptive information, and sharing
information across multiple groups and institutions required by research
projects and data management services mandated by grant funding agencies such
as NSF.

Other duties include:

- Coordinate front end solution design with other applications and digital
library infrastructure developers to ensure optimal integration with services
including metadata management, digitization workflows, image transformation,
etc.
-2nd line resource for development of digital library infrastructure services

As it is dependent on grant funding, this is a one year term position with the

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib 2014: Save the dates!

2013-06-28 Thread Tim McGeary
Hi all,

I am happy to announce that we have secured the venue and dates for
Code4Lib 2014! The conference will be held at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel
in downtown Raleigh, NC on March 24 - 27, 2014. Preconferences will be
held Monday March 24, and the main conference on Tuesday March 25 - 27.

The Sheraton Raleigh Hotel is working through a $6 million renovation that
will be completed this fall. Upon your arrival, you will find warm and
open lobby, great for informal meetups and relaxing. In the hotel will be
Jimmy V's restaurant, where 5% of the revenues are donated to the V
Foundation for Cancer Research. The hotel is always within easy walking
distance to many restaurants, pubs, parks, museums, and other attractions.

The Code4Lib 2014 Conference will be the only event using the meeting space
this week. The meeting space offers open foyers that will be excellent for
our morning and afternoon breaks, along with space for the project and
vendor table sponsors looking to build collaboration with the Code4Lib
community.

Finally, the hotel has the capacity to host all of the attendees, and we've
negotiated a rate of $159/night that includes wireless access in the hotel
rooms. Hotel reservations will be able to made after you register using
the information provided in your registration confirmation. We will be
publishing more details as become available.

Finally, we could not have reached this point without the effort of
CONCENTRA Conference Management Services. The contract negotiation process
took a great deal of effort and had a few unexpected turns. Having
CONCENTRA steer the process was just what we needed to get a contract that
is fair and appropriate for Code4Lib.

We are looking forward to hosting you in North Carolina next spring!

Cheers,
Tim
