We've received a number of Surface RT tablets which we'll be using in the
Fall. Right now, it's only staff trying them out but eventually students
will use them. We don't have a timeline for migrating our public computers

My biggest impression is it's probably wise to wait until Windows 8.1
brings back the Start button before upgrading. The lack of a start button
seriously frustrates users who have grown accustomed to routing all their
actions through it. The touch screen side of the interface would also work
best alongside touch screen monitors, so that's another consideration.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Releasing library holdings metadata openly on the web (was: Libraries and IT Innovation)

2013-07-24 Thread Karen Coyle

Thanks, Owen. This is interesting.

In the schemaBibEx [1] group we have for the moment punted on serial
holdings, in part because we don't have a use case for digging into
detail in that environment. (And we all know it will be very complicated.)

We're looking at actual library holdings statements [2] and trying to
imagine how to express those on the web in a way that will expose
library services. Since schema.org is intended to be simple markup for
web pages, it's interesting to think in terms of what services might be
useful when, for example, a library's holdings are linked to a Wikipedia
article for a person or subject. This could extend John Ockerbloom's
library resources box in Wikipedia.[3]

At the moment we're thinking in terms of location (library and shelf),
availability (on shelf, checked out, library use only) and services
(place a hold, download, check out ebook).

[CODE4LIB] Now Accepting Application: Digital Humanities Data Curation Institute (Oct. 16-18 @ MITH)

2013-07-24 Thread Senseney, Megan Finn
Digital Humanities Data Curation, a series of three-day workshops, will provide
a strong introductory grounding in data curation concepts and practices,
focusing on the special issues and challenges of data curation in the
humanities. Workshops are aimed at humanities researchers — whether traditional
faculty or alternative (alt-ac) professionals — as well as librarians,
archivists, cultural heritage specialists, other information professionals, and
advanced graduate students.

Applications are now being accepted for the second Digital Humanities Data
Curation Institute workshop, to be held at the Maryland Institute for
Technology in the Humanities, University of Maryland, October 16-18, 2013.
Visit the Institute website (http://dhcuration.org/institute) to complete an
application by August 7.

As the materials and analytical practices of humanities research become
increasingly digital, the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of
information science, librarianship, and archival science — which come together
in the research, and practice of data curation — will become more vital to
humanists.

Carrying out computational research with digital materials requires that both
scholars and information professionals understand how to manage and curate data
over its entire lifetime of interest. At the least, individual scholars must be
able to document their data curation strategies and evaluate those of
collaborators and other purveyors of humanities data. More fully integrating
data curation into digital research involves fluency with topics such as
disciplinary research cultures, publication, information sharing, and reward
practices, descriptive standards, metadata formats, and the technical
characteristics of digital data.

Organized by the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH),
the Women Writers Project (WWP) at Brown University, and the Center for
Informatics Research in Science and Scholarship (CIRSS) at GSLIS, this workshop
series is generously funded by an Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital
Humanities grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Our public and staff machines are controlled by IT. Some staff are still on
XP though most are Win7, public is on Win7.

At my former place, public was controlled by IT and on Win7. Staff had just
moved to Win7 over the last year. The move to Win7 + Office 2010 + Google
Apps was such a big change already that we didn't want to make it worse by
going to Win8.

In both cases, I believe a huge part is the campus-wide licensing.
