Re: [CODE4LIB] orcid and researcherid and scopus, oh my

2014-06-05 Thread Stefano Bargioni
Thx Eric for sharing with code4lib-rarians what we started discussing during
Italian lectures on semantic web and linked data [1] and in following emails.

My experience about VIAFid and ISNI began when Paola Manoni (BAV) suggested me
and my cataloguers at Pontificia Università della Santa Croce to add standard
IDs to our authority records (personal names).
Since we are using Koha [2], I wrote a simple but powerful tool/plugin that
queries isni.org and suggests VIAFid and ISNI to store them in the authority
record.
It shows a comparison between ISBNs used in our catalog and ISBNs used by ISNI
to cluster works under the same name. A comparison with titles is shown as well.
Clicking a button, the cataloger adds ISNI and VIAF IDs to the authority record
(MARC21, 024 subfield 2 and subfield a).

We choose to store only VIAFid and ISNI because we consider them as important
IDs. Other IDs can be retrieved starting from them in many ways: viaf.org
offers a record view that contains only links [3] and services like Sameas [4]
or sparql endpoints like DBpedia can be used too.

When a good collection will be formed, we plan to publish our authority records
in RDF. Triples with VIAF or ISNI URIs and the property owl:sameAs will
therefore be very important to build links in the cloud of linked data.

[CODE4LIB] Job: Visiting Librarian, Open Publishing Fellow at Pacific University

2014-06-05 Thread jobs
Visiting Librarian, Open Publishing Fellow
Pacific University
Forest Grove

The Pacific University Libraries are seeking an Open Publishing Fellow (OPF)
to help lead the development and expansion of the Libraries' open access
publishing services. The OPF will be actively engaged in exploring digital
publishing models for open monographic content and in creating a strategy for
promoting the use-and creation-of open textbooks and open educational
resources within the Pacific University community. The OPF is expected to take
a leadership role in these areas; the fellowship is not intended to provide
training for the fellow, but rather an opportunity to directly inform and
influence the direction of the Libraries' publishing program. Applicants with
experience in digital publishing and/or the creation or use of open
educational resources are encouraged to apply. August-November, 2014 (exact
dates are flexible)

Opportunities and Expectations: The Libraries intend to expand their
publishing program to include the publication of scholarly and creative
digital monographs. This will include monographs in traditional formats, but
may also include multimodal texts and/or supplemental multimodal resources to
accompany traditionally formatted texts.

  * The OPF will explore, and provide recommendations on, formats, platforms,
and tools to enable the review and production of these types of works.
Implementation of platforms/tools during the fellowship is not expected, but is
encouraged.

The Libraries have also identified open textbooks and other OERs as a priority
for their publishing program. Developing and implementing strategies to
encourage faculty to integrate existing texts/resources into their courses and
to create original open texts/resources will be the focus of the Fellow's work
in this area.

  * The OPF will collaborate with the Library Director and other relevant
colleagues to develop an OER program with the goal of realizing student savings
and pedagogical improvement through the replacement of high cost required texts
with open resources.
  * The OPF will also develop recommendations for processes, technology, and
support services that will encourage the creation of open textbooks/OERS by
Pacific University faculty (to be published/distributed by the Libraries).
There will be significant overlap between these two areas-the exploration of
formats/platforms/tools for the review and production of monographic works and
alternative supplemental materials in general should be directly applicable to
Library-supported creation of open textbooks/OERS.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  * The Open Publishing Fellowship is open to any applicant who is legally able
to accept employment in the United States.
  * Applicants should have demonstrated experience with digital monographic
publishing and/or the creation or use of open educational resources.
  * Preference will be given to applicants with strong technical skills (HTML,
XML, Adobe products, etc.).
  * Experience working in academic libraries is not required.
How to Apply: Applicants should submit their materials electronically to
Debbie Pareria ( parer...@pacificu.edu), Assistant to the Director, Pacific
University Libraries. Please indicate Open Publishing Fellowship in the
subject line of email transmissions.

ALL APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE:

Curriculum vitae

Names and contact information for at least two references

One-page personal statement explaining your interest in the Fellowship and in
open access publishing.

Decision Timeline: The Pacific University Library Director and Scholarly
Communication  Research Services Librarian will review applications;
finalists for the Fellowship will be invited to interview (virtually or in
person) in June 2014. The Fellowship recipient will be announced July 1 2014.
The Fellowship will start in August; the exact start date is negotiable.

Compensation: The Fellow will receive a stipend of $3500 - $4000/month
depending on demonstrated experience. This is four-month, non-benefit eligible
position.

Re: [CODE4LIB] orcid and researcherid and scopus, oh my

2014-06-05 Thread Ben Companjen
Hi,

Of course there are more identifier systems (or domains, if you will).

Most/many authors in The Netherlands have a Digital Author Identifier
(DAI), which is the record number in the GGC (Gemeenschappelijk
Geautomatiseerd Catalogiseersysteem), or Shared Automated Catalogue
system.
The DAIs are assigned by (university) libraries and in the case of
university libraries assigning/finding DAIs for their researchers, the DAI
is usually linked to the employee in the repository. Following
EduStandaard agreements [0] among all Dutch universities and some
service providers like my employer DANS and the National Library of the
Netherlands (KB), we can harvest the IRs and link publications to
researcher profiles and show them in NARCIS [1].

[0]:
http://www.edustandaard.nl/afspraken%20en%20architectuur/beheerde-afspraken
/
[1]: http://www.narcis.nl

Setup as a service by a company called Pica, the GGC is now hosted by OCLC
after Pica merged into OCLC [2]. The authority files for authors together
are called the NTA ([Dutch Thesaurus Author names]).

[2]: http://www.oclc.org/nl-NL/ggc.html

OCLC is also hosting the ISNI database and VIAF (of course). VIAF, as you
know, was setup as a crosswalk of authority files (including the NTA).
OCLC are working on crosswalking identifiers, AFAIK.

Please be aware that ISNI is a /name/ identifier. Pseudonyms and birth
names for the same person (should) get different ISNIs. And, as said
before, not only people can get ISNIs. Also, the business models for ORCID
and ISNI are different.

As a Linked Data aside, Eric, be aware of what an identifier identifies -
and then how you make assertions using them.
For example, ORCID doesn't use the hash or 303 pattern, so if you resolve
http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800 you get a webpage, i.e.
http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800 identifies a webpage (the same goes
for DOIs, btw). That is why I say about myself (in Turtle):

http://companjen.name/id/BC dct:identifier
http://orcid.org/-0002-7023-9047; .

instead of

http://companjen.name/id/BC owl:sameAs
http://orcid.org/-0002-7023-9047 .

… for I am not a website.

Linking me to things I make is done like so (Qualified DC):

#thing dct:creator http://companjen.name/id/BC .

In your example you used the identifiers as names for the creator(s); it
is as meaningful as saying (in unqualified/simple DC):

#thing dc:creator Eric Lease Morgan .

Hope this helps :)

Groeten van Ben

Re: [CODE4LIB] orcid and researcherid and scopus, oh my

2014-06-05 Thread Gary Thompson
I learned about ORCID at the VIVO conference last August, and followed
up by attending the ORCID Community Outreach meeting two weeks ago. At
UCLA, we see ORCID as a key service to name disambiguation.

The ORCID organization works effectively with all the constituents by
defining roles appropriately. First, each researcher controls her own
ORCID, and can limit the exposure of attributes on the orcid.org site.
When a research organization assign an ORCID to their community of
researchers (outlined below), each assignee can opt out if they so
choose. This feature alone will help us sell the program to our faculty.

Publishers have a critical role. An increasing number of them are
accepting ORCIDs and including them in the article metadata. When
publishers expose this metadata attribute, finding an author means
following a link rather than executing a disambiguation algorithm.

Finally, research organizations can pull these elements together for
their community of researchers. UCLA signed up for a creator membership,
which will allow us to bulk assign ORCIDs for all of our researchers. We
are starting with faculty, but may extend it to graduate students in the
future.

We are implementing a Drupal module to manage the process. We will
create Drupal accounts for faculty, and use a drush script (Drupal
scripting) to assign ORCIDs using a file of faculty campus IDs. The
script will create a Drupal account, call the ORCID APIs to search for
an existing ORCID, create a new one when necesssary, and add the ORCID
as an attribute of the faculty Drupal account. Faculty members will be
able to retrieve their ORCID from the Library's web site by
authenticating via Shibboleth.

We also plan to allow faculty and catalogers to add other IDs: Scopus
and Researcher ID, LC Name Authority, and more.

The point of all of this is to make these identifiers available to
campus partners. The first two are Opus, a faculty information system
being developed by the Academic Personnel Office, and CDL's
implementation of Symplectic Elements to support the open access policy.
I also hope to convince our campus Shibboleth IdP to add ORCID as a new
attribute.

I am writing this message from DrupalCon in Austin. Yesterday, our
contractor met with a programmer from Argonne National Laboratory who is
working on a Drupal lmodule with more complete ORCID API support. Those
efforts will be merged so anyone using Drupal will have a set of modules
to support their requirements.

At the University of Arizona, the campus is implementing an online system for

sources (as contracted/allowed by the data source). For obvious reasons of
researcher disambiguation having these different identifiers reported and
stored would be beneficial.

ORDID and ResearcherID and Scopus, oh my!

It is just me, or are there an increasing number of unique identifiers popping
up in Library Land? A person can now be identified with any one of a number of
URIs such as:

   * ORCID -http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800
   * ResearcherID -http://www.researcherid.com/rid/F-2062-2014
   * Scopus -http://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.url?authorId=25944695600

   * LC -http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94036700
   * ISNI -http://isni.org/isni/35290715

At least these identifiers are (for the most part) cool.

I have a new-to-me hammer, and these identifiers can play a nice role in linked
data. For example:

   @prefix dc:http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/  .
   http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/07378831211213201 dc:creator

 http://isni.org/isni/35290715; ,
 http://viaf.org/viaf/26290254; .

How have any of y'all used theses sorts of identifiers, and what problems do
you think you will be able to solve by doing so? For example, I know of a
couple of instances where these sort of identifiers are being put into MARC
records.

We never handled let alone stored the name or address ourselves. We had

Re: [CODE4LIB] orcid and researcherid and scopus, oh my

If there is really an appetite to continue DAIs going forward, the
wikipedia support for identifiers is modula and there's no reason not to
add more identifiers.

/
[1]: http://www.narcis.nl

Setup as a service by a company called Pica, the GGC is now hosted by OCLC
after Pica merged into OCLC [2]. The authority files for authors together
are called the NTA ([Dutch Thesaurus Author names]).

[2]: http://www.oclc.org/nl-NL/ggc.html

OCLC is also hosting the ISNI database and VIAF (of course). VIAF, as you
know, was setup as a crosswalk of authority files (including the NTA).
OCLC are working on crosswalking identifiers, AFAIK.

Please be aware that ISNI is a /name/ identifier. Pseudonyms and birth
names for the same person (should) get different ISNIs. And, as said
before, not only people can get ISNIs. Also, the business models for ORCID
and ISNI are different.

As a Linked Data aside, Eric, be aware of what an identifier identifies -
and then how you make assertions using them.
For example, ORCID doesn't use the hash or 303 pattern, so if you resolve
http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800 you get a webpage, i.e.
http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800 identifies a webpage (the same goes
for DOIs, btw). That is why I say about myself (in Turtle):

 http://companjen.name/id/BC dct:identifier
http://orcid.org/-0002-7023-9047; .

instead of

 http://companjen.name/id/BC owl:sameAs
http://orcid.org/-0002-7023-9047 .

… for I am not a website.

Linking me to things I make is done like so (Qualified DC):

 #thing dct:creator http://companjen.name/id/BC .

In your example you used the identifiers as names for the creator(s); it
is as meaningful as saying (in unqualified/simple DC):

 #thing dc:creator Eric Lease Morgan .

Hope this helps :)

Groeten van Ben

Who is systematically cross walking these identifiers?

ORDID and ResearcherID and Scopus, oh my!

It is just me, or are there an increasing number of unique identifiers
popping up in Library Land? A person can now be identified with any one
of a number of URIs such as:

* ORCID - http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800
* ResearcherID - http://www.researcherid.com/rid/F-2062-2014
* Scopus -
http://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.url?authorId=25944695600
* VIAF - http://viaf.org/viaf/26290254
* LC - http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94036700
* ISNI - http://isni.org/isni/35290715

At least these identifiers are (for the most part) “cool”.

I have a new-to-me hammer, and these identifiers can play a nice role
in linked data. For example:

@prefix dc: http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/ .
http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/07378831211213201 dc:creator
  http://orcid.org/-0002-9952-7800; ,
  http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n94036700; ,
  http://isni.org/isni/35290715; ,
  http://viaf.org/viaf/26290254; .

How have any of y’all used theses sorts of identifiers, and what
problems do you think you will be able to solve by doing so? For
example, I know of a couple of instances where these sort of identifiers
are being put into MARC records.

If I understand correctly, what we need is ISNI added to the next
release of EduPerson, per
http://software.internet2.edu/eduperson/internet2-mace-dir-eduperson-201310.html

Then non-trivial numbers of service providers and identity providers can
interoperate using ORCID and/or ISNI.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Web Therapy full-day preconference at ALA Annual

2014-06-05 Thread davesgonechina
I can't help but point out that the examples for Web Therapy are mostly
organizational and not Web-specific problems.

   - “Our summer reading guides are totally out of control! How do we reign
   them in?”
   - “I was put in charge of our cataloging when a colleague left the
organization. How do I find time to manage it well in addition to my normal
   work?”
   - “Our Board wants patron statistics, but I don’t know what reports to
provide in a way that will make sense and tell them objectively what they
   want to know. Help!”
   - “Campus security won’t let us install book drops; how are we supposed
to provide a convenient way to return items for our students and faculty?”

Maybe not the best substitutions, but I read the originals as issues with
staff coordination, role management, internal reporting, and
inter-departmental conflicts. None of them, except maybe the LibGuides, is
really a technical problem, and I'm wondering if this panel will actually
be a forum for talking about organizational dysfunction that often results
when new technologies are integrated rather than discussing the
technologies themselves.

Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone! If you are headed to Las
Vegas for ALA in June, come join Chris Evjy (Jefferson County Public
Library) and Nina McHale (Red Rocks Community College) and others who work
on or manage library web sites for some Web Therapy!

Bring your web woes to the table--specific topics will be determined by a
survey sent in advance to attendees--and we’ll put our 20+ years of
combined experience managing public, academic, and special library web
sites to work to develop solutions. This is a great opportunity to work
through complex issues in a small group setting.
