[CODE4LIB] A Final Call for Sponsorships

2014-12-01 Thread Tom Johnson
We're coming down to the wire on when we need to finalize the draft budget
and set registration costs for Code4Lib 2015.

If you know of an organization that might be interested in sponsoring, now
is the time to do the final follow up. The host committee has been in
contact with the usual suspects and many others, so it's likely your
organization has a prospectus (attached). A little nagging from the
community members closest to them may push some organizations over the
edge. Go get'em folks!

The current confirmed sponsors are*:

Gold: Oregon State University
Silver: Penn State University
Bronze: LYRASIS, UC San Diego, Blacklight
Sponsor: Cherry Hill Company, ArchiveSpace

Scholarships: Equinox, Angel Fund (currently ~$1700), [an individual
community member who put up $1000!]

*conversations in progress excluded for maximum shame

[CODE4LIB] sitewide search examples

2014-12-01 Thread Joshua Gomez
Can anyone point me to some great examples of a well executed cross-campus (or
sitewide) search? And I'm not talking about the standard Google Search
Appliance or Site Search that most places use. I mean a really impressive one
that pulls in ALL the library/museum collections records, alongside the basic
campus website index, and all kinds of other data like cafeteria menus,
employee phonebooks, parking reservations and who knows what, then makes them
all searchable through a single search box and presents the results in a really
nice, intuitive user interface. Asking for a friend...

Re: [CODE4LIB] Update on Code4Lib 2015 registration info

2014-12-01 Thread Tom Johnson
I'll update the conference page to include all of the below:

1. The block rate for the conference hotel is $129/night for a single or
double. That rate is available Sunday through Thursday nights, and the
link/info for the hotel rate will be included in the registration form.

2. The registration will be under $200; hopefully substantially under.
We're busy finalizing this.

3. TriMet's MAX Red Line runs between the airport and a few blocks from the
hotel every 15 minutes from 5 am to 11:30 pm. There is also a downtown
shuttle that can be booked for extended hours right to the Hilton for $14
one-way or $24 round trip
http://www.bluestarbus.com/downtown-shuttle-schedule.php.

4. Registration is planned to open Dec. 8th (next Monday). I will include
a time in what I post to the conference page.

5. Beyond the vote link posted previously, the program committee is
scheduled to meet later this week to finalize the schedule and presenter
list. The local committee will work with them to get a final presentation
list up before the 8th.

We are capping the registration numbers higher than in previous years
(450-500), and our hope is not to sell out (or rather, to sell out exactly
and turn not a soul away).

Thanks for prodding us to get this information out!

[CODE4LIB] Call for Presentations: Metadata Services for Research Data Management, ALA Annual 2015 Virtual Preconference, ALCTS Metadata Interest Group

2014-12-01 Thread Thompson, Santi A
Reminder - deadline is this Friday, Dec. 5.

***Please Excuse cross-postings***

The ALCTS Metadata Interest Group seeks presentation proposals for the program
Metadata Services for Research Data Management during the ALCTS Virtual
Preconference Planning for the Evolving Role of Metadata Librarians prior to
the 2015 ALA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA. This program is scheduled to
take place during the week of June 1st (specific days during the week of June
1st will be determined at a later date in consultation with speaker
availability). Presentations are 30 minutes in total -- 20 minutes for the
presentation, 10 minutes for questions.

Librarians continue to engage in active partnerships with researchers who seek
assistance in describing and organizing their data to meet federal mandates and
to promote the discoverability and preservation of their work. This session
will examine different ways that librarians collaborate with researchers to
manage and curate research data.

Potential topics could include:

- Creation of metadata workflows or tools for discipline-based metadata schema
and repositories (internal and external)

- Utilization of emerging metadata schema, including the semantic web, to
describe research data

- Implementation of metadata consultation services for researchers.

Participants will gain awareness of the current issues surrounding metadata
services for research data management and identify different methods and
approaches for working with researchers and the metadata they generate.

The deadline for proposals is December 5, 2014. Proposals may be submitted
