Routers and core infra we own outwright, our core has been in operation for
well over 5years, we replace servers every 4-6 years, our next major upgrades
will take place in 2019 and we expect to be on Windows 10 by 2018 because as of
15 days ago windows 7 is on life support.

Not in charge but I think MPOW pays some attention to Gartner. The articles
seem to map to "hardware refresh" (I tried a couple of different searches).

We're on a 3 year cycle for desktops and laptops - that's when the warranties
run out for us. I wouldn't know about switches, routers, servers. Projectors
we replace them when they die or we renovate what they're mounted to.

2015-02-02 Thread Andrew LIVESAY
Hi Brian,

There are a lot of IT Service Management (ITSM) frameworks available that
cover hardware asset lifecycle management in some way. Information
Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Software Asset Management (SAM) is
one. In my experience these aren't really effective approaches taken
piecemeal, and there's a lot of overhead in subscribing to the whole
approach.

For some general advice, this article seems pretty decent:
http://www.archstoneconsulting.com/services/it-strategy-opeations/white-papers/optimizing-it-technology.jsp

The points about taking a holistic approach and avoiding a
one-size-fits-all refresh policy are spot-on.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Encrypting EZProxy + SIP2 authentication

2015-02-02 Thread Dan Scott
Hi Jane:

Good choice of ILS!

We set up a tunnel between our SIP self-checkout client and the Evergreen
SIP2 server, as documented here:
https://coffeecode.net/archives/219-Setting-up-secure-self-check-connections-using-SIP-tunneled-through-SSH.html

One small difference being that we now use autossh. If your EZProxy
instance is on a Linux box, it should go swimmingly for you; the biggest
pain for me was setting up Cygwin on Vista (silly 3M self check).

Good luck!

That is the general feel I got, taking into account the idea that your tech
will be in pieces after 3-5 years (at least ours is), it is less about a "need"

[CODE4LIB] TCDL 2015 Call for Proposals - Deadline February 9

2015-02-02 Thread Violeta Ilik
Help to build the program for the 2015 Texas Conference on Digital Libraries!
The 2015 Texas Conference on Digital Libraries
will be held April 27-28 at the AT&T
Executive Education and Conference Center in Austin. The Texas Conference on
Digital Libraries is the premiere gathering of digital library and information
professionals across Texas and beyond. This is your opportunity to be part of
the program.

Submit a Proposal for
2015!
(Deadline: February 9)

TCDL addresses a wide range of topics including creation, promotion,
preservation and management of digital projects and assets, as well as the
software and applications that drive the digital library world. Through a
blend of interactive presentations, engaging speakers and informative
workshops, TCDL 2015 will be a great place to network and experience the latest
in all things digital.
What kind of broad areas would we hope to see covered at TCDL 2015? Here are
some ideas!

  * Unexpected finds: present new ways to use existing technology or
demonstrate a new piece of software that's really made an impact on your
workflow. Show off a new digital collection or project or present novel uses
of your institution's collection material.
  * Unexplained gaps: present ways the larger digital library community can
work together to solve problems; initiate dialogues to answer to difficult
questions that have faced your institution and to suggest solutions you’d like
to see offered at a state or national level.
  * Unexplored collaborations: discover ways to partner together to address
an unmet collecting need, novel partnerships that produced interesting results
or ideas for greater exposure for collaborative collections.
Whatever you choose to submit, topics explored can include project management,
intellectual property issues, deep explorations of software applications ...
the sky's the limit! Need more inspiration? Check out last year's successful
programs
to get your creative juices flowing.
How can you make your mark on TCDL 2015? Simple: submit a session proposal
today. Sessions can take a number of forms, including:

  *
Presentations:
General presentations on practical work, theoretical or speculative issues, or
ongoing or completed research.
  *
Panels:
Panel sessions should address a single topic from multiple perspectives and
should engage the audience for a full 80-minute session.
  *   24x7 Presentations (24 slides in 7
minutes):
7-minute presentations comprising no more than 24 slides.
  *
Posters:
Posters will be featured at the conference reception and through a “Minute
Madness” session, during which presenters will give a 60-second summary of each
poster.
  * Workshops, Tutorials & Demos, Birds of a Feather
Sessions:
These events provide venues for in-depth instruction in important areas of
digital library practice (workshops), demonstrations of new or useful tools and
technologies (tutorials), and gatherings of interested attendees to engage in
discussion about a particular topic (birds-of-a-feather sessions). Events in
this category can range from 1 to 4 hours.
How to Submit a Proposal
More information and the Proposal Submission link can be found at the
conference
website.
Important Dates
Be a part of TCDL 2015 by submitting your session proposal now. Deadlines and
other key dates are approaching quickly!

  * November 17: Call for Proposals
  * February 9: Deadline for all Conference Proposal Submissions

[CODE4LIB] Call for hosting proposals for Code4lib Conference 2016 (Reminder)

2015-02-02 Thread Francis Kayiwa
A gentle reminder for those considering to host a Code4lib Conference.
What follows is an echo of my message from last month and we still have
no submissions. If you are on the fence look my up in PDX if you need to
chat.

The Code4Lib Community is calling for proposals to host the eleventh
annual Code4Lib Conference in 2016. Prior to submitting a proposal we
recommend reviewing the conference hosting web page [0] and How To Plan
a Code4LibCon on the wiki [1] to learn more about the kind of venue the
community seeks and the responsibilities involved with hosting the
conference.

The deadline for proposals is midnight PST Friday February 20th 2015.
The decision will be made by a Diebold-otron approved popular vote.
Voting will begin on or around Monday February 23rd, 2015 and will
continue until midnight PST March 6th, 2015. The results of the vote
will be announced Monday morning on March 9th and emailed out to the
listserv.

You can apply by making your pitch to the Code4Lib Conference Planning
list [2] and linking to your proposal on the 2015 Hosting Proposals wiki
page [3]; attention to the criteria listed on the conference hosting
page is appreciated. Good luck!

Alternatively, you might just connect them witn an actual private network.
If they are next to each other, this could be effected with a crossover

[CODE4LIB] Code4LibMidWest 2015 planning kickoff

2015-02-02 Thread Terry Reese
Hi Midwest folks,

A heads up. I'm planning on setting up a breakout during C4L in Portland to
kick off the C4LMidwest 2015 planning. At this point, what we know - it
will be in Columbus, OH around the tentative planning dates of July 23rd and
24th.

Hope to see you,
