Supposedly the Linux package MacUtil (
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/opensuse/11.1/ppc/ppc/macutils-2.0b3-153.22.ppc.html)
can unpack DiskDoubler files. I haven't used it.

[CODE4LIB] disk doubler anyone?

I figure someone here might know how to retrieve a file in an ancient 
format.  Anybody know of a tool that will uncompress a file compressed 
with disk doubler, that doesn't require dredging up an old Mac running 
OS 9 (or trying to emulate one?).

Topic Exploration with the HTRC Data Capsule for Non-Consumptive Research
Organizers: Jaimie Murdock, Jiaan Zeng and Robert H. McDonald
Abstract: In this half-day tutorial, we will show 1) how the HathiTrust 
Research Center (HTRC) Data Capsule can be used for non-­consumptive research 
over collection of texts and 2) how integrated tools for LDA topic modeling and 
visualization can be used to drive formulation of new research questions. 
Participants will be given an account in the HTRC Data Capsule and taught how 
to use the workset manager to create a corpus, and then use the VM’s secure 
mode to download texts and analyze their contents.

As a member of the growing Library Systems development team, reporting to the
Library Application Development Manager, the developer in this position will

Essential Qualifications

Demonstrated experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails plus one other programming

of activities depending on the department and projects, which may include
logging footage, translation, research, event planning, online outreach, and

Description

  
The WITNESS Media Archive is a repository of over 5000 hours of video, both
tape- and file-based, recorded and produced by human rights activists around
the world over the past 20 years. The Media Archive is also a leader in the
development of training resources aimed at non-professional archivists and
activists who are managing their own human rights video collections.

Interns train under the supervision of an Archivist, performing a variety of
hands-on tasks including cataloging, tape capture, digital ingest, research /
reference, access provision, documentation of archival processes, training
resource development support, and other administrative tasks for the archive.

  
Learning Outcomes:

  * By the end of the internship, the intern will have learned how to:
  * Create metadata for unpublished human rights video footage in a cataloging 
database.
  * Handle and identify various video formats in the collection.
  * Use software tools to capture, analyze, view, transfer video files.
  * Understand the processes and components of a digital archiving workflow 
within a small organization.
  * Liaise with content creators and program staff to acquire content for the 
archive.
  
Qualifications

  * We are seeking interns enrolled in a graduate program related to moving 
image archiving and preservation, archival studies, or library/information 
science. We also review applications from recent graduates who may be seeking 
the same type of mentorship and educational focus related to their career 
choice or educational background.
  * The following would be beneficial for entering our program:
  * Familiarity with foreign affairs and international politics
  * Strong written English skills
  * Experience or strong interest in archival work & setting
  * Experience with or strong interest in working with visual media
  * Experience or skills in video production or digital media
  * Fluency in Spanish, French or other foreign language
  * Familiarity with Filemaker Pro
  * Familiarity with metadata or cataloging standards or protocols
  
GENERAL INFORMATION

  
We require a minimum commitment of 2 months, for at least 16 hours a week.
Internships are unpaid. Preference is given to intern applicants receiving
credit at their educational institution. All internships are based in our
Brooklyn office, convenient to the Atlantic Terminal / Barclays Center
(2,3,4,5,B,D,Q,N, & R trains), LIRR, and the C (Lafayette) and G (Fulton)

[CODE4LIB] Distribution of collections by DDC or UDC?

This might be a bizarre question, but can anyone point to some analysis for a 
large general library, consortium, or even like WorldCat, a distribution of 
materials by class?  So say for example 10% of the collection is in the 700s, 
and half of that is in the 741s, a quarter is in 746.432...

Harvard University IT Library Technology Services (LTS) has developed and
deployed a large scale digital repository service aimed at providing web
access and long term preservation to tens of millions of digital images,
audio, books, web harvests, and other digital collections of the libraries,
archives and museums at Harvard. The digital repository is strategic to the
core mission of the Harvard Library. As the digital landscape changes, a
variety of new content types will added to the repository, and made available
for on-line presentation to both Harvard users and the general public. Each
content type presents unique challenges in preservation and on-line delivery.

  
LTS is seeking a creative java software engineer to enhance our digital
repository to support new content types, such as vector drawings, word
processing files, 3D objects and raw camera image formats. In close
collaboration with Harvard Library digital preservation staff and as part of
an agile development team, the software engineer will design, implement, test,
and deploy software enabling content deposit, preservation, management and
presentation, opening Harvard's diverse collections to researchers, teachers
and learners now and in the future.



**Basic Qualifications**  
  
• Bachelor degree with 3+ years java software engineering experience or
equivalent.

• Familiarity with XML as a data representation

• Development experience with the full stack of java web applications,
including web services, and front end javascript and MVC frameworks.
