Re: [CODE4LIB] API to retrieve scholarly publications by author

Possibly the Mendeley API?
http://dev.mendeley.com/getting_started/common_tasks.html

It might also make a difference to know the domain in which these authors
publish. Scopus indexes primarily scientific, technical, medical content.

I've used the arXiv API for a similar purpose: http://arxiv.org/help/api/index.

Hi list,

What are some good API options for retrieving a list of scholarly publications
by author?

I would like to be able to grab them and display them on a website along with
other information about each author.

Google Scholar does not have a public API as far as I can tell.

CrossRef metadata search does not allow to search by author.

Orcid seems promising. I would have to ask the users I have in mind to add or
import their publications to Orcid, as most of them are not on there already.
That's doable, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do what I described above
with their public (as opposed to their member) API.

Any other ideas or thoughts?

Best,
Alex Armstrong

Marshall Breeding's Library Technology web site has a nice search tool that
lets you explore what software different libraries are using. Not sure if it
includes a lot of museums and it may be heavily ILS focused versus other
content tools.

An interesting question. I am not sure if there is one great source for that.
You can get some idea of open source platforms from FOSS4Lib. I think Wikipedia
actually has a listing of software, but not 100% sure on that. It is slightly
more institutional repository focused, but the Directory of Open Access
Repositories has an interesting statistics section, which I think includes a
chart of what software is used in each repository. I can't speak to your
Greenstone question, I'm not aware of many that use it, but there could still
be a strong user group out there. Hope that helps a little.

Is Greenstone still heavily used or is it being phased out?

This has happened to me as well, but it was from registering for an athletic
event (I don't even remember what it was any more) not for anything code4lib

Hi everybody,

I hope this is the right place to inquire about this. I have
some information about a possible problem with the company
handling registration for code4lib. I recently noticed a
   suspicious charge on my credit
 card
   for
the amount of $64.95. The charge showed up as ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK.
  After
some investigation I found out this was from a company called
ACTIVE Network, LLC. Apparently this company handles
   registration for
 events.

To my dismay I found out that I had been charged for this
   annually
  since
   2013. I'm very embarrassed that 1. I didn't notice this during
the registration process and 2. I didn't catch the charges earlier.
  Anyhow,
after a quick email search I found something surprising; I had
  received
emails from this company at my /work/ email address. I never
   noticed
  the
emails because they looked like junkmail, however, upon
   reviewing
  them I
discovered that at some point I had supposedly registered for a
free trial that ended after a month, at which point I was
   automatically
 enrolled
   into
an annual subscription. Needless to say, I//did /not/ ever sign
   up
 for
   any
trial or subscription, at least not to my knowledge.

Since I have only used my personal credit card for work
purposes 3 times, it was easy to tie this to code4lib 2013. I
looked at my receipt for code4lib 2013 and saw that something
   called RegOnline (owned by
 Lanyon
Solutions Inc) was used to process my event registration.
   Though I'm
  not
sure this is the same company, RegOnline, Lanyon Solutions Inc,
and ACTIVE Network, LLC all share the same physical address. I
   suspect these
  three
companies are one and the same and will refer to them as ACTIVE
  Network,
LLC for the rest of this email.

I did a little investigating and found out that ACTIVE Network, LLC.
   uses
unscrupulous business practices to trick people into singing up
for their annual subscription. The crux of this is an
automatic opt-in they employ while processing enrollments for
   third parties. Though

Does anybody here know how to extract circulation statistics from an library
catalog? Specifically, given a date range, are you able to create a list of the
most frequently borrowed books ordered by the number of times they’ve been
circulated?

I have a colleague who wants to digitize sets of modern literature and then do
text analysis against the result. In an effort to do the analysis against
popular literature, he wants to create a list of… popular titles. Getting a
list of such a thing from library circulation statistics sounds like a logical
option to me.

Does somebody here know how to do this? If you know how to do it against Ex
Libris’s Aleph, then that is a bonus.

Re: [CODE4LIB] code4lib in San Diego?

Yeah, it's probably very unlikely that I would travel to LA for a meet up - I
commuted to LA from SD for two years for school and haven't quite recovered
from that. :)

I mainly was hoping to connect with some more local library geeks for informal
happy hour type get-togethers. Maybe we'll chat a little bit about library
systems, but maybe we'll just talk about local craft beer. Hard to say at this
point.

I'm not in San Diego but I am in Southern Cali and a part of the Southern Cali
group, so I feel I can weigh in on this:

If the people in SD want to meet and can find a convenient place to do so, for
goodness sakes, let them and don't worry about meetup vs local code4lib.
Just ask please Bee et al to keep in touch with the other Southern Cali and
other Cali groups so that we can have periodic joint events. If there's
confusion, San Diego can just call itself Northern Mexico group (just kiddin').

The LA area is so hard to get around that I would much rather have a bunch of
little offshoot local code4libs that occasionally get together for a larger,
longer meeting than to have no one meet at all because it's so damn difficult
to get to the place where the meeting is. I don't see the harm in many mini
groups.

I'm saying this as someone who commutes 42 miles each way to my job. I don't
think anyone else in the US who hasn't lived here can really understand what it
means to get around Southern California.

That said, if the SD folks want to go out one night without having to do much
planning or coordination -- think meetup here rather than local code4lib
meeting -- they should be be encouraged to do that too.

I would also encourage folks to keep these discussions on-list instead of
responding privately, if that's OK with Bee and other interested folks.
It'll be good for the broader community to watch the SD/SoCal crowd
self-organize, learn from it, and lend a hand where appropriate!
