[CODE4LIB] Job: Digital Library Services Officer, Library and Learning Innovation, University of Hull

2015-09-16 Thread Chris L Awre
*** Apologies for cross-posting *** Please pass on as appropriate

Library and Learning Innovation (LLI) at the University of Hull has today
advertised for a new post of Digital Library Services Officer.

https://jobs.hull.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?id=1840=1

This post will be part of the new Student Engagement Team within Customer
Services, and help to coordinate and support the use of technology within LLI.
Libraries find it difficult to operate without technology today, and this post
is seeking a dynamic and flexible individual who can help us exploit the
opportunities that are available. The Student Engagement Team has been set up
to build on this use of technology in communicating with students, and the new
post will add to this and connect it to the Library’s core operations.

If you have any queries, please contact me (details below).

Re: [CODE4LIB] Cover pages and Google

2014-11-27 Thread Chris L Awre
Bernadette,

This issue was the topic of a paper from the University of Bath last year - see
http://opus.bath.ac.uk/34033/.

One outcome from this was a conversation with EPrints to make sure that
metadata was not affected by a coversheet and therefore shouldn't affect Google
crawling. So it seems to be something that can be addressed according to how
the underlying system is treating the coversheet (as you have noted by making
it an image instead).

Chris

Could you provide some examples of the resources that you're excluding and
searches that return those results (maybe with screen shots in case Google

I'll admit that my schema.orghttp://schema.org/ hammer is itchy, but I don't

The problem doesn't occur in Google Scholar, just the main Google

One way to avoid this problem is to have the cover page formatted as
an image PDF rather than a text-readable PDF. Can anyone recommend a
software that will convert a text-readable PDF to an image PDF??

Thanks, Daron. We don't actually run OCR over the cover page PDF. We just save
it in Word as an Adobe PDF, then append to the existing document, which is
already in PDF format.

We also sometimes create cover sheets via a batch process using MS Word; again,
just saving in default Adobe PDF format.

Perhaps it depends on how you are generating PDFs. If it is straight acrobat,
then it should be as easy as making a PDF of all but the cover, running OCR,
then adding the cover in as another page. As long as you do not generate OCR
again, the added pages should stay image only. I haven't tried it, but I'm
pretty sure that's possible.

If it is a question specific to your repository architecture then it might be
harder.

From:Van Mil, James (vanmiljf)

Subject: ActiveSierra - Gem for connecting to III Sierra db

My colleague Sean Crowe and I have written a simple Rails engine with models
for the Postgresql database backend to Innovative Interfaces Inc. Sierra ILS.
Within a host rails app, it can be used to spin up mediated access to the
database via Ruby objects. With a few additional controllers, it would also be
straightforward to enable the serialization of database contents over http via
json or xml. Though there is a pending release of API functionality for Sierra,
this gem offers broader and more granular access to the database.

See the github repo: https://github.com/uclibs/active_sierra/

We’re both primarily tech services librarians, and our first use cases for this
gem have focused on back-end workflow. For example, we’re developing a Rails
app to track and report lost, missing, or long-overdue items in Sierra. With a
rake task, a webapp will query Sierra monthly and build a local database of
targeted item record numbers and values, which will be served to a site for use
in making decisions about replacement. Other possible use cases could be record
quality control reports.

Out of security concerns, we've purposefully excluded models for patron tables
but we haven’t ruled out adding these once we can ensure the security of this
data.

We still have some short-term development planned, but we noticed that the repo
was getting some attention yesterday, and thought it would be a good time to
share. Some of our planned work includes:

- Developing tests for the models and methods
- Adding more scopes and methods to abstract the tables (we have a goal of
making our testing application backend as friendly as possible to other tech
services staff, and so we’d like the code to be readable to anyone who is
familiar with both MARC cataloging and III system conventions)
- Modeling additional tables

Please feel free to use, fork or contribute. We are very open to comments and
suggestions (especially from experienced Rails developers who may be able to
offer some perspective on our direction – we both started learning about Rails
at Code4Lib2013).

And of course we welcome any questions.

Thanks!
James

Re: [CODE4LIB] Discovery layer for Primo

2013-12-04 Thread Chris L Awre
We have recently had feedback from Ex Libris that they are not planning support
for third party discovery tools for a couple of years. We were asking about
using Blacklight. They seem open to the idea in principle, but are clearly
aiming to promote Primo as the sole means of access for a while yet. If anyone
has attempted to layer a third party tool over Alma, though, it would be
interesting to hear about.

Hello,

Alma does not have any sort of OPAC. If you run Alma, you search your
library records through Primo. So you could say there is already one in
place.

I'm not sure how patron empowerment works. I would assume that if there
is such a thing in Alma, it would use the Restful API just as in Aleph.
