[CODE4LIB] Job: Contract Positions: System Administrator and Application Developer - Gates Archive

2015-02-04 Thread Erin O'Meara
Hi,

Gates Archive has two open positions that may be of interest to the
Code4lib community. We’re hiring a System Administrator and an Application
Developer. Patrick Owens and I will be at Code4lib next week in Portland
and would love to talk to you if you are interested in learning more about
the positions. We’re a small but amazing group that needs a couple of new
technical teammates. If you aren’t going to be in Portland, but are
interested, feel free to email us off list for more information.

Here’s a bit more about us – we take an innovative approach to archives
development and management, integrating processes for born-digital and
analog information. The archive focuses on the preservation of the Gates
family’s personal and philanthropic endeavors including records of the Bill
Melinda Gates Foundation. Here’s a link to an OCLC presentation where I
share some insight into how we work,

Erin

Re: [CODE4LIB] what good books did you read in 2014?

2014-12-09 Thread Erin O'Meara
My favorite books from this year were Hateship, Friendship, Courtship,
Loveship, Marriage by Alice Munro and Redefining Realness by Janet Mock

For those who want some Oregon/Portland - relevant books for the upcoming
conference, a few that might be interesting:

Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter
A Hundred Little Hitlers by Elinor Langer
Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion

Ursula Le Guin would also be a good Oregonian read, as well as something
about Celilo Falls or the Columbia River.

Other code4lib readers might have more recent PDX books to add since I've
been away from Oregon for several years.

Great idea for discussion. I read a lot, but I'd suggest you check out
 God, Forgive These Bastards
 by Rob Morton

It's a nice, small book that has a very nice punk jazz album of the same
 name that accompanies it.

  My personal favorite song is

But, well, though I hate the expression It's all good!

Hey, code4lib! I bet you consume fascinating media. What good books did
 you

we're all digital, so feel free to include movies and video games and so
  forth.)

  Mine:
http://www.obeythetestinggoat.com/ (O'Reilly book, plus read free
 online)
  -
a book on testing from a Django-centric, front end perspective.
 *Finally* I
get how testing works. This book rewrote my brain.

_The Warmth of Other Suns_ - finally got around to reading this magnum
 opus
history of the Great Migration, am halfway through, it's amazing. If
 you're
looking for some historical context on how we got to Ferguson, Isabel
  Wilkerson has you covered.

_Her_ - Imma let you finish, Citzenfour and Big Hero 6 and LEGO movie and
Guardians of the Galaxy - you were all good - but I walked out of the
theater and literally couldn't speak after this one. Plus, funniest
throwaway scene ever. Almost fell out of my chair.

_Tim's Vermeer_ - wait, no, watch that one too. Weird tinkering genius
 who
can't paint obsesses over recreating a Vermeer with startling,
  physics-driven results. Also, Penn Jillette.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Job: Digital Technologist at Gates Archive

2013-03-12 Thread Erin O'Meara
Hi folks,

This posting is still open. We are a new organization and don’t have an
active website right now, so if you were interested in it but wondering who
we were, here’s more background information about the Gates Archive:

Gates Archive was formed in 2011 – we are capturing the personal and
philanthropic archival collections of the Gates Family (such as the
personal archives and the records of the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation).

A personal note about the archive – I moved from Chapel Hill (UNC) back to
the Pacific Northwest after several years at academic libraries. I have
been here for a little over a year and am amazed at how a program
management focus and a great organizational culture has created a unique
and special place to work. We are a new organization, but with this
position posting, we are moving into the next phase. I am very excited
about this job and think it will be a great opportunity for the right
person.

If you have any questions about the posting, don’t hesitate to get in
touch. I’d be more than happy to talk or email in greater length.
Best,

Erin O'Meara
