For this year’s Spring Program, our speakers will address new technologies 
and new tools. Jefferson will discuss and provide examples of data 
visualization, a relatively new field of activity in which information, 
often in the form of large data sets, is communicated efficiently through 
graphical means. Jeffrey will speak about new technologies and their 
library potential in the context of his work as the Emerging Technologies 
Coordinator in Columbia University’s Science and Engineering Libraries. 
Jennifer will describe some of the challenges and opportunities in 
building services for digital scholarship at NYU.

E-resources/Systems Librarian
The New York Academy of Medicine Library

The New York of Academy of Medicine Library is seeking an energetic, creative 
and experienced librarian capable of managing and implementing the NYAM 
Library's e-resources, Integrated Library System (ILS), and web 2.0 based 
projects within the context of a rapidly changing environment.

The position will serve as the technical staff member of the Library's Grey 
Literature project  team as well as a resource to NYAM's Historical Collections 
staff as they leverage the web and web based 2.0 tools to promote the 
activities and services of that specific area.

This position reports to the Head of Technical Resources and supports all of 
the library's initiatives with primary emphasis on the Grey Literature Report, 
the Resource Guide for Public Health Prepapredness, and the Rare Book Room/ 
Historical Collections library technology needs. The incumbent will work across 
library areas on various issues including Library catalog maintenance, report 
generation, and web-related projects and maintenance. The incumbent must have 
the ability to be self-directed as well as to take direction and work in both 
individual and team environments.

Responsibilities are as follows:

* Manage and maintain electronic resources, including A-Z list, link 
resolver, and EZProxy

* Support the activities of technical services, including serials 
maintenance and cataloging, as needed

* May be asked to supervise work of one or more part-time assistants or 
interns

* Set up trials and assist in evaluation of electronic products; assist 
with pricing and licensing negotiations as needed; make recommendations to 
Library director and staff

* Take a lead role in data migrations and data clean-up for the ILS, as 
needed

* Act as a contact person for vendors ,as needed

* Provide technical support to other library departments, including but 
not limited to User Services and Historical Collections; may be asked to liaise 
with IT or Communications departments on behalf of library or library staff

* Provide technical support for the Grey Literature Report, the 
Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness, and other initiatives as needed

* Maintain and customize stylesheets for Historical Collections finding 
aids in collaboration with the Project Archivist

* In collaboration with other technical services librarians and the 
manager of document delivery, represent the library to WALDO and PTFS/LibLime 
regarding maintenance and development of library catalog (LibLime Enterprise 
Koha)

* Create reports on catalog as necessary using SQL; maintain custom 
reporting interface for library staff, currently written in PHP

* Assist professional staff with website updates in Convio  content 
management system

* Update library home page and other website content as needed

* Customize, configure, and generally support the use of online 
products including but not limited to library catalog, CONTENTdm, A-Z 
list/e-journal portal, LibGuides, Refworks, subscription bibliographic databases

* Stay abreast of current developments in library standards and 
technologies, and apply that knowledge to every day projects and recommendations
Qualifications: ALA-accredited Master of Library Science or related degree; a 
minimum of three years administering integrated library systems; knowledge of 
MARC and AACR2; copy cataloging and original cataloging;  experience with 
electronic resources maintenance, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, server-side 
scripting. Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing, and to 
commit to goals and identify and achieve established outcomes.
Preferred: PHP and at least one other programming language; familiarity with 
OCLC Connexion, Koha, Drupal, MARCEdit, and CONTENTdm; knowledge of  National 
Library of Medicine (NLM) Classification and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) ; 
familiarity with XML, XSLT, Encoded Archival Description (EAD), and finding 
aids; ability and willingness to represent the library at various committees 
and organizations as required; experience with Convio content management 
system, a plus.

Jim Neal is currently the Vice President for Information Services and
University Librarian at Columbia University, providing leadership for
university academic computing and a system of twenty-two libraries. His
responsibilities include the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and
Learning, the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship, the Copyright
Advisory Office, and the Center for Human Rights Documentation and
Research. Previously, he served as the Dean of University Libraries at
Indiana University and Johns Hopkins University, and held administrative
positions in the libraries at Penn State, Notre Dame, and the City
University of New York.

SPEAKER: Kate Wittenberg



As Project Director, Client and Partnership Development at Ithaka, Kate focuses 
on building partnerships among scholars, publishers, libraries, technology 
providers, and societies with an interest in promoting the development of 
digital scholarship and building and sustaining innovative initiatives. Before 
coming to Ithaka, Kate was the Director of EPIC (the Electronic Publishing 
Initiative at Columbia) a pioneering initiative in digital publishing, and a 
model partnership for libraries, presses, and academic IT departments. Some of 
the ventures produced by EPIC include CIAO (Columbia International Affairs 
Online), Gutenberg-E (a reinvention of the monograph as an electronic work), 
and Jazz Studies Online.

Consulting Systems Librarian
Description of Project:  5-8 hours, may be extended. The purpose of this work 
will be an initial exploration into possible methods of enhancing the 
presentation and functionality of the New York Academy of Medicine Library's 
Grey Literature Report 
(http://www.nyam.org/library/pages/grey_literature_report). In-depth interviews 
with the Grey Literature Report Team as well as an examination of the team's 
workflow and current technologies will be necessary. The outcome should be a 
written recommendation for a development strategy, including a recommendation 
for the qualifications of the future developer.

Qualifications:

* Good oral and written communication skills, attention to detail

* Working knowledge of Integrated Library Systems

* Working knowledge of current cataloging and metadata practices and 
standards

* Working knowledge of Z39.50, MARC, MARCXML, MySQL, HTML, CSS, 
JavaScript, and at least two server scripting languages and their applications

* Knowledge of AJAX and its applications preferred

* Knowledge of Java and its applications or other object-oriented 
programming language preferred

* Knowledge of Google Analytics scripts and RSS preferred

* Experience developing/implementing web applications and databases 
preferred

* Knowledge of current trends in mobile applications or interfaces for 
libraries preferred
