Re: [CODE4LIB] newbie

2010-03-25 Thread Matthew Bachtell
As someone who uses PHP to do the small things I would recommend using
Python or another language. I am trying to transition away from PHP to
Python as it is not a panacea. PHP's great for web scripting but was never
intended to do all of the duct taped projects that I have put together with
it.

Yes, you can get a lot of stuff done with it, but I've had way too many
incidents where newbie coders didn't check their inputs, and we've had
 to clean up after them.

Another way of looking at this: part of learning a language is learning its
vulnerabilities and how to deal with them. And how to avoid security holes
 in web code in general.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Q: MARC formats in XML

2010-02-16 Thread Matthew Bachtell
Getting in touch with Nate Trail or Morgan Cundiff at LoC's MARC
Standards Office (http://www.loc.gov/marc/ndmso.html) may be your best
bet. The generic email for the office is nd...@loc.gov.

But I'm not sure schemas exist that will actually validate the semantic
 content you want validated.

are encoded in an XML format that one might use for processing/validation
of the leader, field tags, indicator codes, subfield codes, field and
subfield repeatability, and field and subfield requiredness.  Something akin
to the codepoint table in XML at:

Re: [CODE4LIB] Payment for code4lib 2010?

2009-12-16 Thread Matthew Bachtell
I was only charged the $25 for the preconference but wish to attend
the entire event. Should I also wait or reregister?

 Mads,

There was a glitch with the form (since fixed). I am waiting to hear
from Kevin Clarke if we should register again or if we will be billed
 some other way.
