Re: [CODE4LIB] locking app for iPads

2013-08-01 Thread Nunez, Robert
I am currently experimenting with Meraki (http://meraki.cisco.com/) to help
with remote management and tracking in the event that an iPad is lost or
stolen. This mobile device manager allows you to use an Apple Management
profile in combination with an app to send notification, install apps remotely,
do location tracking, and remotely lock down or wipe the device. It's not bad
for a free service.

Most forums have tried pointing me to MobiControl for some of this, but it is
currently out of the projects price range.

Good Luck

Subject: [CODE4LIB] locking app for iPads

Dear Fellow Techs,

We're looking to create a circulation policy for iPads (gen 4) in the Learning
Commons, and were wondering about an app that will lock the device after a
specific amount of time (3-4 hours). The idea is if a student does, in fact,
steal the device, they will be locked out of actually utilizing it. Has anyone
heard of something like this?

Many thanks!
Cheryl

Re: [CODE4LIB] Stand Up Desks

2013-03-04 Thread Nunez, Robert
I have worked at a standing desk for a number of years and can attest that it
does help with back problems. There is one thing that you need to factor in
however, is your floor carpeted? I know it may sound trivial but at a previous
institution, I was moved from a carpeted office to a bare tile office during
repairs and it just killed my feet. It wasn't until I got an area rug that
things started to get better. Former colleges have also attested that using
exercise balls instead of chairs also help.

Best,
Rob

A bit late to the conversation, but there was a neat instructable this week
about making your own standing desk.

Thought I'd share for those who are handy.

Despite my best efforts of sitting up straight, getting an ergonomic
chair, making sure my desk is a proper height (I'm a tall guy, so my
desk is 'modified' to reflect this), and I make sure I stand up and at
least stretch every 30 minutes (or so), my back still bothers me some days.

I saw a Wired article a few months back hailing the benefits of stand
 up desks
 (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/10/mf-standing-desk/), and
also found an article in NY Times (
 http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/02/business/stand-up-desks-gaining-favo
r-in-the-workplace.html?_r=1) and wondered if there were any other
 developers/list members who used them.
In my mind, I'm trading one problem for another, and I'm not sure I
want to be standing up all day long. On the other hand, my back is
 killing me today.

 Suggestions?

 Mark
