The Preservation Reformatting Division (PRD) provides access to at-risk Library serials, brittle books, newspapers, photographs and manuscripts by converting items to new formats such as microfilm, facsimile copies or digital reproductions. Reformatting is accomplished through programs for microphotography and digital capture. The goal of the internship is to provide Library Science and Information Technology students, graduates, and post-graduates with the opportunity to study and work with state-of-the-art digital technologies: those used for the digital reformatting of library materials; those used to document and model reformatting and related preservation workflows; and those used to ensure proper workflow execution by enabling statistical process monitoring and control. Interns have the opportunity to participate in the following key activities to plan, get, describe, sustain, and make accessible reformatted digital and/or microfilm formats for serials, photographs, manuscripts, brittle books, and other items. Digital Preservation Activities Plan: Processing management (e.g., assessing materials, processing brittle books, reviewing reformatting policies, etc.) in order to identify the functions and processes to be represented in a fashion comprehensible to library management and IT personnel. The Technology Consultant will be engaged to perform the following activities: 1. Prepare a technology environmental scan: a. Identify current technologies available in the ReCAP partner libraries and the ReCAP facility to support discovery, request and delivery, collections management, and collections development Describe the software systems currently in use to support these library functions at each of the three ReCAP partners and at the ReCAP facility. Include local and external systems that are used by these institutions. b. In conjunction with the Technology Architect, identify options for software systems to support those four required elements of the shared collection (discovery, request and delivery, collections management, and collections development). Based on research and domain knowledge, describe software systems (and related services) that could be used to support those functions in the context of a shared collection. Provide a general description of their functionality and their attributes e.g. propriety or open-source, perpetual license or subscription, and/or other attributes as advised by the Technology Consultant. Provide a preliminary assessment of the pros and cons of each system for use by ReCAP shared collections. Note: this activity is intended to describe potential technologies in general, not to recommend specific choices at this time. Qualifications: • MLS degree (or recognized equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program; • demonstrated large-scale project management expertise; • demonstrated experience with XML, applying metadata standards and schema, and controlled vocabularies; • demonstrated expertise with one or more metadata manipulation and scripting languages (e.g. XSLT, Perl, Python); • demonstrated applied web application development experience, including familiarity with development frameworks (e.g. Ruby on Rails, Django), and application programming language(s) such as Java, PHP, or others; • familiarity with semantic and linked data standards such as RDF and OWL; • familiarity with standards and best practices in data curation and preservation; • strong understanding of emerging trends and issues for research libraries in the areas of digital curation, digital preservation, scholarly communications and metadata; • excellent independent learning and problem-solving abilities; • excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work independently and in collaboration with others; • evidence of a developing research portfolio This is a continuing-stream (tenure track) appointment to be filled at the Assistant Librarian level and appropriate for a librarian with up to nine years of post-MLIS experience.
