Hi everyone,

The StrepHit IEG project [1] is currently in the phase of curating a list
of reliable sources containing biographical data.
The mix'n'match tool [2] already maintains a list.

Can anyone involved in GLAM projects please suggest any more reliable
sources?
Thanks for getting in touch with me!
Cheers,

   Hello community,

could you please suggest me the best way to treat the following use
 case:

We have a lot of pdf files, which have in them a lot of links
(terms), referring to different pages in the same pdf, or to a page in
another pdf file. Noticed that links do not behave well, when opened
 for
example with the default google chrome's pdf reader. So my aproach is
 to
force download the pdf. So the situation is getting mixed: One has a
 pdf
stored locally, and all the links load again the pdf, to be read
  online...

Do you have any ideas, best practice i could follow, so as to make this
   work in a better way?

   Best

p.s. we are using drupal to serve the pdf files, but i guess this is
   irrelevant...

This is in an EBSCO Discovery Service bottom branding widget - if a match
is found, the viewer displays. That part works. The issue comes when I
hide the containing div via CSS and then, in the function that runs when
a match is found, change the ID to unhide the widget. At that point it
won't display properly. As a workaround I found that if I throw an error,
the book preview displays, but without the search box and navigation

 2) Everyone should understand the RDF meaning of classes, properties,
domain and range before beginning. (cf:
 http://kcoyle.blogspot.com/2014/11/classes-in-rdf.html)

 3) Don't lean too heavily on Protege. Protege is very OWL-oriented and
can lead one far astray. It's easy to click on check boxes without
knowing what they really mean. Do as much development as you can without
using Protege, and do your development in RDFS not OWL. Later you can
use Protege to check your work, or to complete the code.

 4) Develop in ntriples or turtle but NOT rdf/xml. RDF differs from XML
in some fundamental ways that are not obvious, and developing in rdf/xml
masks these differences and often leads to the development of not very
 good ontologies.

2014-10-07 Thread todd.d.robb...@gmail.com
Of interest to the initial discussion topic:

http://google.github.io/physical-web/

What is this?

The Physical Web is an approach to unleash the core superpower of the web:
interaction on demand. People should be able to walk up to any smart device
 - a vending machine, a poster, a toy, a bus stop, a rental car - and not
have to download an app first. Everything should be just a tap away.

The Physical Web is not shipping yet nor is it a Google product. This is
an early-stage experimental project and we're developing it out in the open
as we do all things related to the web. This should only be of interest to
developers looking to test out this feature and provide us feedback.

Does anyone have a suggestion for the free open-source Q/A board + easily

It is an option to use the SharePoint Discussion Board but I am looking

Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

graphic that I think this group will appreciate of how CU-Boulder sees
ORCiDs across their systems from a recent ORCiD event:

 [cid:image001.jpg@01CF79CD.64C36FA0]

Individual academics (especially grant-related folks) should get and use
ORCiDs, which either the individual can register for or their affiliate
institutions may assign in batches with an institutional membership. An
ISNI, in contrast, may be assigned to an individual, often for
rights-tracking purposes, as in the case of recorded performances. Also
ISNIs can be given to organizations (corporate bodies, in catalogerese)
while ORCiDs are only for individuals.

That's awesome. Any idea why Blacklight seems to be more discoverable? I
live in Seattle and the KCLS (public system) catalog is powered by
Evergreen but doesn't show up at all.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Local catalog records and Google, Bing, Yahoo!

2012-02-23 Thread todd.d.robb...@gmail.com
Karen,

I had a similar thought. How hard would it be, even as an experiment, to
associate geolocation to local records? Therefore the records of
institutions (I'm speaking of physical resources primarily) would be
relevant to a person's query based upon their location, which of course
would play out more fully for mobile users than desktop contexts.

Thoughts?

[CODE4LIB] LAMlab in Seattle

2011-10-06 Thread todd.d.robb...@gmail.com
Hello all,

I just formed a meetup/group/workshop/hackathon/hangout/et al for anyone
interested in innovating within the libraries, archives and museums space
for the Seattle area. It's just a few of us at this point, mostly MLIS
students at UW, but we'd love to have practitioners participate/lead. We
want it to be like barcamp, et al, where it's a project-focused approach to
moving the fields forward. Our first meetup with be about rethinking the
library catalog, hopefully before the end of October. Anyhow, more to come
on our blog: http://lamlabseattle.wordpress.com/

If you could let your Seattle people(s) know, we'd be thrilled.

Cheers,

Tod
