It depends on the audience. There are many who still don't know what Cassandra
is or how different it is from Mongo. The data practitioners or technology
leaders in an organization may now know what it is and what it does, but it
still has an uphill battle at the other 60% of the fortune 500.

Having a list of frequently updated cases however helps the overall public
relations for the technology, in which folks that use it feel proud to be
listed, and service providers who service Cassandra have the closest thing to a
partnership with the community.

A little bit of credit goes a long way.

[~KurtG], i added some feedback comments to your commit
[here|https://github.com/apache/cassandra/commit/f30a7dab7f2871fd4b88352f4b17129c02425484].

Can we please just remove the third-party-support page. A google search or just
asking the users ML is a fairer way to solve this issue.

I would also scrap the list of companies under the 'Proven' section. That list
is so old. Even back in 2016 it looked like
[this|https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CrxUyKSVMAAtax0.jpg:large].
Rewriting it could be done using the info at
https://db-engines.com/en/system/Cassandra (without using hyperlinks):
 - Key customers: Apple, Netflix, Uber, ING, Cern, Intuit, Fidelity, NY Times,
Outbrain, BazaarVoice, Best Buy, Comcast, eBay, Hulu, Sky, Pearson Education,
Walmart, Microsoft, Macy's™, McDonalds, Macquarie Bank, GitHub, Spotify,
Instagram.
 - Market metrics: Cassandra is used by 40% of the Fortune 100.

Otherwise the 'Proven' section is not needed IMHO. The technology is in a very
different adoption phase today.

An alternative could be to introduce this page to a community based website
(such as Rahul's idea from the ML), and keep the official C* site clean and
related only to C*. The community site would have to be pretty open in what it
accepts. However that's just an extension of the same problem, just passing the
responsibility on to someone else.

The only way I see this working is if we blindly accept anyone who wants to add
themselves to the list. Either that or we get rid of the page.

Glad to see Apache engaged in this topic Stefan.  Your suggestion unfortunately
would lead to a good ole boys club which is no good.  I now favor eliminating
the third party page completely.  We will show them love in other ways.  This
type of issue is going to keep coming up.  Doesn't ASF have a policy statement?

Here is another problem of the same type to consider: On the Data Modeling web
page for Apache Cassandra, I think we should somewhere on it say "A free course
in data modeling for Apache Cassandra in available from DataStax Academy (with
the link).  Does anyone object to that?

Here is another one: I was thinking we should have a web page maybe more than
one in a section called Learning Cassandra.  How do you do that without pushing
certain vendors maybe inadvertently giving them more visibility than other
deserving vendors.

Here are three more:

What about when there is a conference coming up or a call for papers for a
conference?  Should we let people announce on the mailing lists?  Should we
post information on the web site?

What about the MeetUp groups?  Can't we show them some love and mention at
least that people could look at meetup.com for a Cassandra group near them?

What about when individuals take it on themselves to organize a meeting for
Cassandra users - not through MeetUp but still legitimate leaders in our
community?

Stefan Podkowinski commented on CASSANDRA-14128:

I don't feel fully comfortable to promote companies the way it is proposed
here, just a single click from the homepage. We already throw around names of
lot's of companies on the homepage directly and we (the Apache org) need to
make sure to not present us as a collaboration between those, but as a
commercially independent organization.

My suggestion for a compromise would be to add a "Professional Services"
section at the bottom of the "Community" page and list companies in order of
number of contributions (patches). We can phrase it like e.g. "the following
companies are actively contributing to Apache Cassandra as part of the
community and may also be able to offer professional support", or something
like that. But just list and link them, without logos. Short line of text might
be acceptable. But we should present them as part of the community, that's my
main point here.

It's not that big of a change and I think the only thing that really needs

It's problematic for sure but two things:
 # Organizations like Last Pickle, InstaCluster and DataStax have been long
time contributors in the community, they are known to the community, they
present valuable information at Cassandra events that they freely give.  To be
unwilling to figure something out seems to swing us to much towards being
unappreciative.
 # Those organizations are actually providing services that help Cassandra
users.  They gained experience and made products and services that are very
useful to Cassandra users so we want users to know about them - it will help a
lot of them.

PR isn't really required here.

I do have to admit I'm also a bit uncertain about the third party support page.
I know it's in the old wiki, and I'm certain a lot of people would benefit from
having it exist (I've personally been asked about such a list more times than I
can count), but it also creates an opportunity for complaints about how the
list is sorted or criteria for being added.

Maybe hedge "Cassandra is in use at" with "Cassandra is (or has been in the

[~kenbrotman] thanks for the comments. I've already done a
[patch|https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12905220/14128-site.patch]
for the site that's attached to the ticket. Should remove all the dead links
and what not. Probably going to need to bring this up on the ML to get people
to actually look at it though. It's on my list of things TODO.

Dead links remain.  The home page is really bad.  This is substandard.  Lots of
bad links on home page.  Shouldn't the home page be a priority.  Ready for some
pain!  I am.  We'll knock it out Kurt.  What's the plan going to be for the
home page links now.  We have to make new version and submit to the group I
think.

Lots of good thoughts Kurt.  Regarding posting links to third parties directly
on the Apache Cassandra web site, what is ASF's policy on that.  That might be
seen by some as an endorsement of certain vendors.  I wonder if its permitted.
It will have its problems for example: Who decides who makes the cut and who
doesn't?

[jira] [Commented] (CASSANDRA-14128) Prune dead links from cassandra.apache.org

I like pain. I'll tackle some of this as part of filling in some much needed
docs. Going to do this incrementally:

1. Remove all dead links (these are mostly to blog posts)
2. Migrate links pointing to the old wiki to instead point to in-tree docs.
This will at least include moving the bare minimum docs from the old wiki to
the new where necessary (e.g hints page, read repairs, third party support, etc)

And after this, create new tickets for:
3. Updating doc pages migrated from the old wiki to be more accurate/relevant.
4. Tracking down blogs/videos that cover the old, removed links and adding them
back (+more).

If anyone knows how we approached linking to third party blogs and making
claims about users in the past LMK. I assume if they put it in the public
domain it's fine to link to it/make a claim about it but not sure what our
actual stance is on this.
