We cannot avoid duplicating JMX beans but these are only thin wrappers of metrics. So I implemented an aliasing mechanism where the same metric is wrapped in different beans registered with different names. Because we have changed the type from ColumnFamily to Table, then each single table metric needs an alias, regardless of whether its name was changed or not. Users would have to reconfigure dashboards and reports. As a consequence this also makes comparing performance between 2.x and 3.x more cumbersome as you have to switch between the old and new naming scheme. It also makes it hard to compare historical performance data between the effected metrics. I'd rather suggest to create a new config option for this. By default, Cassandra would use the new naming. Users, who need to use the old metric names, can switch back in the config. See patch ([diff|https://github.com/apache/cassandra/compare/trunk...spodkowinski:feat/9448-newmetricnames]) for very simple implementation. A configuration switch is certainly an easier alternative except we have hard-coded names scattered in NodeProbe.java and other places. Also, there is a substitution that is hidden away, if one day we need to use the word Table or Partition for new metrics, they would get converted to ColumnFamily or Row (I swapped the conversions of your patch because in the code we want to keep the new names, not the old ones). I suppose we could live with this provided it's documented. If the only solution that allows deprecating the old metrics is to duplicate them, then perhaps that is too much overhead and the monitoring tools out there will just have to take that hit, but it would be great to avoid. First of all, isn't it better to keep old names as deprecated until we stop supporting 2.2? Agreed but how? I could not find a way to add a deprecated tag or alias name to metrics or JMX beans. Do you know a way to do this or did you simply mean to keep duplicated metrics and just deprecate in the documentation? bq. In StorageService, there are some operations referring ColumnFamily. We should rename these also. Could you be more specific and list the methods that feed the metrics? I merely renamed the methods feeding the metrics or their parents for consistency as otherwise it would be very confusing.
