One idea that gained some popularity after discussion is to introduce an
engine-less mode to MXNet, in which the operators are exposed in API and
dispatched in a similar way as pytorch.

Given that Naive Engine option should be quite close to this already, we
should verify the overhead in the Naive Engine mode and judge the necessity
based on that result. Since the target is to measure the overhead, we will want
to control the performance difference in operators.

cpu test on both v1.5.x and v1.6.x mkldnn + openblas, but no regression
issue was found.
So can you try to use USE_BLAS=mkl as Taolv said above and test again?

I have tried to use build.sh but failed for: CMake Error at
simd/CMakeLists.txt:41 (enable_language):
 No CMAKE_ASM_NASM_COMPILER could be found.
So for v1.5 and v1.6 I build use cmd:
   make -j USE_MKLDNN=1 USE_BLAS=openblas USE_GPERFTOOLS=0
and setting openblas include and lib directory.

Some flaky tests always fail in CI but cannot reproduce easily from local
even with docker env on EC2. So debug with the CI environment can be more
efficiency to find the root cause.

After digging a while, I found several confusing facts about this bug.

   1. @nickguletskii is correct, it's not about `ElementWiseSum`
   2. Duplicating same node with (1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10...) times, the loss and
gradients are always GOOD, however, with (5, 6, 7), the gradients will diverge
at the first iteration

   ## Description ##
(Brief description on what this PR is about)

   ## Checklist ##
   ### Essentials ###
Please feel free to remove inapplicable items for your PR.
   - [ ] The PR title starts with [MXNET-$JIRA_ID], where $JIRA_ID refers to
the relevant [JIRA issue](https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/MXNET/issues)
created (except PRs with tiny changes)
   - [ ] Changes are complete (i.e. I finished coding on this PR)
   - [ ] All changes have test coverage:
   - Unit tests are added for small changes to verify correctness (e.g. adding
a new operator)
   - Nightly tests are added for complicated/long-running ones (e.g. changing
distributed kvstore)
   - Build tests will be added for build configuration changes (e.g. adding a
new build option with NCCL)
   - [ ] Code is well-documented:
   - For user-facing API changes, API doc string has been updated.
   - For new C++ functions in header files, their functionalities and arguments
are documented.
   - For new examples, README.md is added to explain the what the example does,
the source of the dataset, expected performance on test set and reference to
the original paper if applicable
   - Check the API doc at
https://mxnet-ci-doc.s3-accelerate.dualstack.amazonaws.com/PR-$PR_ID/$BUILD_ID/index.html
   - [ ] To the my best knowledge, examples are either not affected by this
change, or have been fixed to be compatible with this change

   ### Changes ###
   - [ ] Feature1, tests, (and when applicable, API doc)
   - [ ] Feature2, tests, (and when applicable, API doc)

   ## Comments ##
   - If this change is a backward incompatible change, why must this change be
made.
   - Interesting edge cases to note here

   Merged.
It is a tiny change to modify the template type, and keep the original
variable name.
We can modify the semantic name in another PR : )
std::vector is not suitable in this PR, since it will allocate extra
capacity.

Currently the gluon Estimator has a LoggingHandler, which supports logging
per batch and per epoch. It would be good to have a configurable logging
interval (e.g. logging every 50 batches). Logging per epoch does not provide
enough information, while logging per batch is to verbose

Yes it requires changes in more places. IMO we should follow proper
progression by moving from 1.5->1.6->1.7 to keep the change history in master
clean and consistent.
