[jira] [Created] (NETBEANS-1836) Out of heap space removing large number of nodes

2018-12-26 Thread Rangi Keen (JIRA)
Rangi Keen created NETBEANS-1836:

Summary: Out of heap space removing large number of nodes
 Key: NETBEANS-1836
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-1836
 Project: NetBeans
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: platform - Explorer
Affects Versions: 8.2
Reporter: Rangi Keen
 Attachments: RemoveNodeOutOfHeapSpace.patch

If you remove a large number of selected nodes (e.g. 10,000), you may run out
of heap space. Note that this does not occur when deleting nodes because the
nodes are first deselected, but it will happen if the nodes to be removed are
not first deselected.

This seems to be related to [bug
#193852|https://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=193852] designed to
attempt to maintain cursor position when removing a node from the tree. Prior
to the change for this bug, the node parent was set to null when the node was
destroyed and therefore was not added to the list of nodes to be deselected in
{{org.openide.explorer.view.TreeView.removedNodes}}.

One fix (in [^RemoveNodeOutOfHeapSpace.patch]) is to change the check in
{{org.openide.explorer.view.TreeView.removedNodes}} when adding to the removed
selection list ({{remSel}}) to avoid adding paths for the nodes that will be
deleted and only add the selected child nodes. This was put in place to avoid
leaking memory for child nodes (see
[JDK-6472844|https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-6472844]), so I think
this will maintain the intent and not result in further memory leaks.

[jira] [Created] (NETBEANS-1835) Difficult to choose from menu button in overflow toolbar

2018-12-26 Thread Rangi Keen (JIRA)
Rangi Keen created NETBEANS-1835:

Summary: Difficult to choose from menu button in overflow toolbar
 Key: NETBEANS-1835
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-1835
 Project: NetBeans
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: platform - Window System
Affects Versions: 9.0, 8.2
Reporter: Rangi Keen
 Attachments: ToolbarOverflow.patch

Do the following to reproduce the issue:
 # Make the main window small enough so that some of the toolbars with
associated dropdowns are hidden. This could be in the NetBeans IDE (or any
platform based application).
 # Invoke the overflow toolbar and then invoke the dropdown from one of the
buttons. For example, in the IDE, invoke the dropdown for the Profile Project
action.
 # Move the mouse to select an item from the menu.

If the mouse pointer moves outside the bounds of the overflow toolbar, even if
it is inside the bounds of the dropdown, the toolbar will close along with the
dropdown.

When there is a dropdown open, the overflow toolbar should remain open, at
least when the mouse is inside the bounds of the dropdown and probably also
even when outside the bounds as is typically the case for menus.

I've attached a possible solution (in [^ToolbarOverflow.patch]) that will keep
the overflow toolbar open when a context menu invoked from one of the
components in the toolbar is open.

[jira] [Created] (NETBEANS-1834) Possible race condition in ExplorerActionsImpl

2018-12-26 Thread Rangi Keen (JIRA)
Rangi Keen created NETBEANS-1834:

Summary: Possible race condition in ExplorerActionsImpl
 Key: NETBEANS-1834
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/NETBEANS-1834
 Project: NetBeans
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: platform - Explorer
Affects Versions: 8.2
Reporter: Rangi Keen
 Attachments: ExplorerActionsImpl.Race.patch

{{ExplorerActionsImpl}} uses a background thread to determine the enabled state
of its actions. The background thread calls
{{ExplorerActionsImpl.BaseAction.toEnabled(boolean)}} to set the target state
from the background thread and then queues up a call on the {{EventQueue}} to
be run on the EDT that calls {{ExplorerActionsImpl.BaseAction.syncEnable()}}
which calls {{setEnabled}} if {{toEnable}} is non-null.

However, since the check for {{toEnable != null}}, the use of {{toEnable}} in
the call to {{setEnabled}}, and the set of {{toEnable = null}} are all on
separate lines there is the possibility that another call to
{{toEnabled(boolean)}} will set {{toEnable}} after the call to {{setEnabled}}
but before it is reset to null. The end result is that if the new value of
{{toEnable}} was different from the one being acted upon, the action may end up
in the wrong state.

One solution (in [^ExplorerActionsImpl.Race.patch]) is to use an
{{AtomicInteger}} to get the value of {{toEnable}} and set it to null (or
{{NO_CHANGE}}) atomically, thus avoiding the race condition.

I don't have a reproducible case in the NetBeans IDE, but we encountered this
in our custom application using the NetBeans platform. The attached patch
solved the issue in our case.

Can not provide more than I have. Netbeans produces the reported message and
fails to launch. I get no further screens or messages.
The standard install for netbeans on ububtu 18.04 must leave some required
package out of the installation that may be required for ubuntu 18.04. I am not
familiar with netbeans and can provide no further information.

Please do not raise the priority to Blocker, as this is most certainly a local
issue affecting maybe only you.
Also if you can provide more information what is happening and how can we try
to reproduce the issue, then we can more easily help resolving your problem.
All I see from the description of this issue is that you have WARNING messages
during boot, I've replied that those are normal if you are using Java 9 or
later, regarding that we still have to support Java 8.

I know this is a 3rd-party plugin and gradle too (I think) but could it be smth
similiar? He has a similar problem with symlinks if I understand it right

> Often, while cloning, switching branch, merging, opening etc. etc. NetBeans
> starts Background scanning for changes, but it is not real background,
> because everything what you want to do then, like changing the branch,
> commit, push, pull, open project, delete or whatever, is blocking by this
> task and you can't cancel it, because it is essential.
> Either we need to rethink about this process like to make everything or most
> of the stuff doing things in parallel or the task should really be
> cancelable. It is a pain in the ass for big projects when they start to scan
> for changes.
> It is a real world case because you acan see it when you work on NetBeans
> modules.
> Cheers
