RE: Release with PB and HA

2012-03-12 Thread Dave Shine
I apologize for asking a dumb question. I know what HA is, but what does PB
stand for?

Thanks,
Dave

+1, I agree we should do 23.3 ASAP with HA. There are a couple JIRAs
worth resolving before we do the release, but some time in the next couple
weeks we should be ready to cut an RC.

 Hey gang,

Now that branch-23 has PB and (almost) HA checked in, it would be good
to get these out into the wild so more people can start kicking the
 tires.

How about we cut a 23.3 release soon from branch-23? Or perhaps
 re-branch 23.2 if that's easier.

 Thanks,
 Eli

Re: Release with PB and HA

2012-03-12 Thread Harsh J
Dave,

As Uma expanded it, its Protocol Buffers
(http://code.google.com/p/protobuf/), we now use it for performing all
of Hadoop's internal RPCs. One good reason for the change, was to
introduce (and to simplify) IPC wire compatibility so that clients can
talk to different major versions of servers (which isn't possible
today).

You can find more information in Sanjay's document here:

associated JIRAs)

Where can I download these template files from?

[jira] [Created] (HADOOP-8162) Hadoop 1.0 has duplicate and conflicting conf directories

2012-03-12 Thread Eli Collins (Created) (JIRA)
Hadoop 1.0 has duplicate and conflicting conf directories
-

 Key: HADOOP-8162
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-8162
 Project: Hadoop Common
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: conf
Affects Versions: 1.0.0
Reporter: Eli Collins

In branch-1 and friends conf/* differs quite a bit from
src/packages/templates/conf*. Eg log4j.properties is quite different. I don't
think the package artifact needs different configuration settings, and
HADOOP-6255 should not have have duplicated all of these files, let's share the
files or at the very least make the files match up.

[jira] [Created] (HADOOP-8164) Handle paths using back slash as path separator for windows only

2012-03-12 Thread Suresh Srinivas (Created) (JIRA)
Handle paths using back slash as path separator for windows only

 Key: HADOOP-8164
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-8164
 Project: Hadoop Common
  Issue Type: Sub-task
  Components: fs
Affects Versions: 0.23.0
Reporter: Suresh Srinivas
Assignee: Daryn Sharp

Please see the description in HADOOP-8139. Using escape character back slash as
path separator could cause accidental deletion of data. This jira for now
supports back slash only for windows. Eventually HADOOP-8139 will remove the
support for back slash based paths.
