Thank you very much the remainder [~xkrogen]. I was not aware of the
HowToCommit only of the HowToRelease.

Now I updated the HowToCommit page as well.

Hi [~elek], I appreciate the work done here. Can you please update the
committer wiki to reflect the new site repo? It still has references to the old
way of doing things. See the "Committing Documentation" section
[here|https://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/HowToCommit].

Sorry for the inconvenience [~djp]. I didn't notice this earlier.

Please try out the following command:

{code}
git clone https://gitbox.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop-site.git -b asf-site
{code}

(The asf-site is used and we have no master, which could be a problem.)

anyone playing with the hadoop-site SVN repo should know that when I checked it
out last week there were enough HTTP requests for all the javadoc files that
the ASF infra robot blocker kicked in & blocked my home IPAddr. It should be
fixed now, but for safety; don't do this from an office where your colleagues
might notice lost access, do it from home, some internet cafe, etc, just to
make sure all is well

Got pinged about this offline.

Thanks for keeping at it, [~elek]!

I think there are two road-blocks here
 (1) Is the mechanism using which the website is built good enough - mvn-site /
hugo etc?
 (2) Is the new website good enough?

For (1), I just think we need more committer attention and get feedback rapidly
on this Jira and get it in.

For (2), how about we do it in a different way in the interest of progress?
 - We create a hadoop.apache.org/new-site/ where this new site goes.
 - We then modify the existing web-site to say that there is a new
site/experience that folks can click on a link and navigate to
 - As this new website matures and gets feedback & fixes, we finally pull the
plug at a later point of time when we think we are good to go.

Thoughts?

[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-14163) Refactor existing hadoop site to use more usable static website generator

# Yes. It works exactly the same. I just attached the source, because the
generatted html files should be commited to a different branch according to
this proposal. But I uploaded them to here:
 # I found a very long comparison at here
[https://opensource.com/article/17/5/hugo-vs-jekyll] I used jekyll a few years
ago, so I am not so familiar with the latest version, but my biggest problem
was exactly the same what [~aw] is noted. It was difficult to maintain the
right version of ruby with the right version of gems when my blog is updated
only a few times per year (even if I used rvm). I think the two biggest
advantage of Hugo are:
 ## It is just a single binary for every platform, no dependencies. Very easy
to run even if the release manager is no familiar with ruby/python/npm any
other language/environment. Download and execute, nothing more.
 ## I also like how Hugo structures the content. Everything under the
content/release directory (eg. this file:
could be handled in a different way not just as a news entry. This is a very
easy way to handle releases. The release script/release manager should generate
only a simple md file with a header, nothing more. More scriptable, easier to
maintain.
 # Good question, I have never thought about it. I doesn't seems to be
supported (eg. [https://github.com/gohugoio/hugo/issues/1430)], but hopefully
it could be handled by an external tool. (Or during a pre-commit yetus check?)

happy to move on from Forrest. As for the cost of "one additional download", in
the land of maven that's moot unless the DL is a Linux VM.

* Spark uses the python Jekyll tool BTW, that local serve of files *as they are
saved* makes for a good documentation process. It sounds like Hugo does the
same thing. Is that right? I can see the served docs just by building?
* Out of curiosity then, how do hugo and jeckyll differ?
* What do we have for link checking of generated sites? Always something nice
to have, though not a blocker

Hi, let's continue the discussion forward to a new hadoop site.

I agree with you in many point. Let me summarize

Maven site:

 * PRO: Doesn't require external tool
 * PRO: yetus supports it out of the box
 * CON: more limited capabilities to do a modern site: only one good theme, no
support for different content type.

Hugo site:
 * PRO: Single binary, runs everywhere
 * CON: But requires one additional download
 * PRO: Easy to use, mainstream, well supported, many available themes, active
development
 * PRO: Supports automatic content generation (release announcement could be
generated during the releaseing process)
 * PRO: Supports sitemap/rss everything what a proper site needs

Forrest (existing solution)
 * CON: Hard to generate new content for every release
 * CON: Not so easy to use
 * CON: No modern responsive look and feel

I think this is the same what you said. The only differences between our views
that I think the CON of hugo (we need one external tool) is negligible compared
to the advantages (much more powerfull for site generation. See the proposed
example).

First of all I would like to clarify: I propose to replace the forrest based
site generation and NOT the /docs generation. I agree with you that maven site
plugin is good for generating version specific documentation. I think the site
could be generated with hugo and the docs could be generated as before. WIth
both generation the results should be copied to the svn branch (which could be
moved to git).

(And just answer the question: locally it could be tested with "hugo serve"
command and checking the rendered version at http://localhost:1313/ It also
provides a much easier development experience than the maven site generation)

What do you think? Could you accept the proposed version with further
enhancement? We can create followup jira to check the site generation with
yetus. What else do we need?

Thank you very much to take the time and review it.

bq. Hugo is a static website generator, mvn site is for generating project
documentation.

mvn site is also effectively a static website generator. So that's pretty much
a wash. There are some big wins I don't see with hugo:

a) maven is already part of our build process and already very familiar to
pretty much the entire community
b) maven is cross platform and available on MANY OSes/chipsets without having
to compile it yourself to get there
c) maven is already part of our CI pipeline...

bq. to simplify the release process

Sure, everything is simpler if it doesn't have any sort of testing phase. A
mvn site-based install means we can actually use precommit to apply patches for
testing.

bq. With hugo it's very simple and easy to automatize thx to the flexible
content handling and dynamic menu generation.

To me, this seems like greatly overestimating the need and underestimating the
existing toolset. The main website rarely gets updated. Using a different
build and content management system won't help in that regard either.

Also, just to clarify "How does this integrate with the docs from a
release?"... I'm looking for "release manager takes the site tar ball and does
X with it." Right now, none of that seems to be covered.

bq. I think only the docs/downloads are using external links which are fine

I think this might be a point of confusion. The downloads are external. But
http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/ is supposed to be coming off this website.
Updating that needs to be part of this patch/documentation for this process.

Also, let me clarify the question a bit. If I build the website in hugo and
then browse the public filesystem with a browser, things fail to load and links
are broken. That's less than ideal.

about a) and b)

Until know we used mvn site for generating the docs and apache forrest to
generate the site. This patch just replaces the forrest part with hugo. Hugo is
a static website generator, mvn site is for generating project documentation.
For mvn site the reflow theme is almost the only one which could be used to do
some modern reponsive site, with hugo there are hundred of more powerful
themes. And the content usage of hugo is more natural. The final goal was (as I
wrote on hadoop mailing list at 03/24/2017 where I also proposed to use hugo)
to simplify the release process. With hugo it's very simple and easy to
automatize thx to the flexible content handling and dynamic menu generation. I
can imagine that it could be done with mvn site, but not in such an easy way.

My suggestion was to use the mvn site based documentation as before (but agree,
that long term we can switch to a reflow based better skin there as well)

c.) I think only the docs/downloads are using external links which are fine.
All the other links could be adjusted by the baseurl parameter of hugo (-b)

{code}
 grep -r "https://hadoop; .
./config.toml:baseurl = "https://hadoop.apache.org;
./layouts/partials/navbar.html:   https://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r{{.BaseFileName}}/;>{{.BaseFileName}}

Some initial questions/comments:

a) Why is this being built with Hugo instead of mvn site (esp when used with
something like reflow)? What does hugo provide that mvn site+reflow doesn't?

b) How does this integrate with the docs from a release? All of the links point
to the existing website.

c) What can be done about the absolute pathing in links? This makes it
extremely difficult to test since it assumes that / is the root of the tree.
(Yes, I know about hugo server.)

Hi, I updated the patch according to the latest modification on the svn site
(new commiters/pmc members + 3.0.0-beta1). Now it is up date date and can be
merged.

I suggested to commit the source of the site to a separated branch (eg.
asf-site-author) instead of trunk. We need one and only one version from the
site source at every time, and it would be more confusing the get different
versions on the different branches.

As we discussed the rendered site also could be committed to the hadoop
repository but using a different branch (usually the convention is to use the
asf-site branch) and we can ask INFRA to switch to use the git repo
(https://blogs.apache.org/infra/entry/git_based_websites_available)

I created a more detailed plan, how can we go forward:

{code}

1. Migrate the rendered/published site from git to svn

git checkout --orphan asf-site
git reset --hard
git clean -dfx
#where the publish dir is a checkout of the
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/site/main/publish svn repository
cp -r /home/elek/hadoop-common-site/publish/* ./
#it takes a lot of time as it contains a lot of files
git add .
#also takes time
git commit -m "HADOOP-14163. Import existing published site from SVN"
git push
#Not that about 82MiB will be uploaded. The current size of my .git directory
is 3.2Gb in case of haddop, so most probably it's not a big change.

2. Open an INFRA ticket to switch from SVN to git

3. Commit the _source_ of the new site to an other branch

git checkout --orphan asf-site-author
git reset --hard
git clean -dfx
wget
https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12890692/HADOOP-14163.008.tar.gz
tar zvxf HADOOP-14163.008.tar.gz
mv hadoop-site-proposal/* ./
rm -rf hadoop-site-proposal
git add .
git commit -m "HADOOP-14163. Source of the new, hugo based hadoop site"
git push

4. Switch to the new site (until this point everything should be the same as
before on https://hadoop.apache.org):

For this, you need to have both the asf-site-author and asf-site author
branches checked out locally. It could be two different clone, or you can add
additional workdirs to your existing haddop checkout:

Assuming, you are on the asf-site branch:

git worktree add ../hadoop-asf-site asf-site

#remove old site:

#Please not that the first rm has no '-rf', the docs folder should NOT be
deleted.
rm ../hadoop-asf-site/*
rm -rf ../hadoop-asf-site/images
rm -rf ../hadoop-asf-site/skins

#install hugo binaries

#generate the new site according to the manual:
https://gohugo.io/getting-started/installing/

#generate the new site
hugo -d ../hadoop-asf-site
cd ../hadoop-asf-site
git commit -m "HADOOP-14163. Switch to a hugo based, generated site"
git push

+1. I will update the wiki pages about releaseing/updating the site

+1. We can setup an automatic jenkins jobs to generate the site in case of
changes on the asf-site-author branch

The patch is applicable with `git apply HADOOP-14163.007.patch`. Not sure what
is the problem on yetus side.

As 2.8.3 and 3.0.0-beta is comming it would be great to merge it before these
releases. I am ready to update the link on the releaseing wiki pages to the new
tutorial after the merge.

Elek, Marton commented on HADOOP-14163:

Also wrote the wiki page about the site generation:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/HADOOP/How+to+generate+and+push+ASF+web+site+after+HADOOP-14163

I think we can move to the new site even without the separated jenkins job. The
current site is also generated manually (but with svn not git).

Thanks [~elek]. After the discussion in common-dev ML, I'll work on the
followings:
1. Create ./asf-site directory
2. Add the content of https://github.com/elek/hadoop-site-proposal to the
directory
3. Generate web pages and push them to asf-site branch
4. Create a CI job to run 3. automatically when ./asf-site directory is changed

Allen said,
bq. commit an empty commit to asf-site to work around INFRA-10751. Recommend
comment be the git hash of the current hadoop/trunk
so I'll commit an empty commit to asf-site branch before doing 3.

Yes, I also checked other projects, for example
https://github.com/apache/incubator-openwhisk-website uses the same pattern:
asf-site is the rendered, master is the source.

I think it's a good pattern, even if it needs multiple checkout during the
release process (the master should be checked out to add the announcement
entry, the asf-site should be checked out to add the raw javadocs).

I think we need 2 INFRA requests:

1. to create the hadoop-site repository
2. to create a configuration to refresh the https://hadoop.apache.org with the
content of the asf-site branch of the hadoop-site repository.
(+1. later: to create a job which automatically commits the new rendered site
from master -> asf-site, as you wrote).

I am not sure if I can open these tickets as a simple contributor, but let me
know if I can do anything to achive this.

Thanks [~elek] for the comment.

bq. But I think it's important that we are speaking about two repositories. One
for the source of the site and one for the rendered site.
Yes, that is important. The following seems cleaner.

* the source of the site -> master branch
* the rendered site -> asf-site branch

In the near future, I'd like to use some CI/CD tool to push the rendered site
to asf-site branch automatically when master branch has changed.

bq. Spark uses git (apache/spark-website) as the source but don't know where is
the generated site (was here 1 year ago: https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/spark)

Probably the generated site is
https://github.com/apache/spark-website/tree/asf-site/site and the site is
pushed manually
(https://github.com/apache/spark-website/commit/ee654d1f30dbd724ee21c2b6c0afb46309118882).

For me everything is acceptable. I would like to get it merged anyway...
Separated repo could be more cleaner.

But I think it's important that we are speaking about two repositories. One for
the source of the site and one for the rendered site. Spark uses git
(apache/spark-website) as the source but don't know where is the generated site
(was here 1 year ago: https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/spark)

IMHO for hadoop both part should be migrated to git (to the same or different
repositories) to avoid using different SCM just for releasing...

BTW, I refreshed the proposed branch at
https://github.com/elek/hadoop-site-proposal with 2.8.1, 3.0.0-alpha4 and the
new PMC/commiters. So it's ready to move to somewhere...

Now I'm thinking it's better to create a separate repository for web site,
which makes CI/CD easier. Some ASF projects such as Spark, Flink, and Kafka
have separate repositories for web site. What do you think?

Cool. Now Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-alpha3 is released. Would you update the document
as well?
When you update the document, I'll push this to asf-site branch.

Could you please somebody help me to finish it.

I migrated all the old svn content. The only things to do:

1. Go to a clone hadoop repository
2. git fetch g...@github.com:elek/hadoop.git asf-site:asf-site
3. git-checkout asf-site && git log (check it)
4. git push apache asf-git (depends from your remote name)
5. Open an INFA ticket to use git asf-site and publish directory instead of the
INFRA branch. (according to this blog item:
https://blogs.apache.org/infra/entry/git_based_websites_available)

Thx.

Thank you for your comment and updating the links. If the both are migrated to

Elek, Marton commented on HADOOP-14163:

Yes, we are speaking about two branches:

* One contains the source of the hadoop site
* One contains the rendered hadoop site and the generated javadocs

Currently both are in SVN
(https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/site/main/author and
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/site/main/publish)

There are two options:

1. Move only the author part to a dedicated branch, and create a jenkins job to
generate the site and commit it to the svn
2. Move both to git. They could be on the same branch or in two different
branch. But an automatic site generation jenkins job could also be useful in
this case as well.

PS: I fixed the links of the related projects:

Akira Ajisaka commented on HADOOP-14163:

Step 2 is also wrong. As HBase is doing
(https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-10722), we need to create a
jenkins job (e.g. https://builds.apache.org/job/hbase_generate_website/) to
push the web pages to asf-site branch instead of using some CI tools. If
jenkins job will do this, probably we don't need additional doc branch.

Thanks [~elek] for the update.

bq. But do we need it for the merge?
Now we don't need it, but I'm thinking it would be better to support relative
path because it makes testing easier.

One comment: Would you update the links for each project (such as Cassandra,
HBase, etc.) in
https://github.com/elek/hadoop-site-proposal/blob/master/content/related.md?

Now I'm thinking how to integrate the work. I'd like to
1. Create a doc branch and push the hadoop-site-proposal directory into the
branch.
2. Create a script (such as .travis.yml) to deploy web pages and push them into
gh-pages branch, and add the script in the doc branch.

That way when the doc branch is updated, the web pages will be updated
automatically. What do you think?

Unfortunatelly it's not enough. I changed the templates as well
(https://github.com/elek/hadoop-site-proposal/commit/f93f911b96060ed546a265966332707a6ce350fa)
but even with the changes there is one issue: at the index page the logo is
not displayed.

You can test it with

{code}
hugo -b http://your.base.url.com/withcontext
{code}

But do we need it for the merge? It works well with the apache site where there
is no context root.

I suggested the following order:

1. git svn clone https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/site/main

2. Delete the content the author file and extract the content from the
HADOOP-14163-001.zip. (Commit)

{code}
cd author
rm -rf *
wget
https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12861716/HADOOP-14163-001.zip
unzip HADOOP-14163-001.zip
mv hadoop-site-proposal-master/* ./
rm -rf hadoop-site-proposal-master
{code}

3. Delete the old site and generate the new site. (Don't use the attached
rendered site. It's an older version. I didn't upload a rendered site, because
I think It should work for at least one committers, not just for me ;-)

{code}
cd publish
\ls -1 | grep -v docs | xargs -n1 rm -rf
cd ../author
hugo --destination ../publish
{code}

(Hugo should be installed with brew/apt-get or with downloading the single
binary)

4. git push the improved version to a new asf-site branch of the apache git
repository

5. File an INFRA issue according to the
https://blogs.apache.org/infra/entry/git_based_websites_available

[~raviprak] No. It's about the hadoop.apache.org and not the maven generated,
version specific documentation sites. But thanks the points, I will check that
issue as well...

Thanks Marton for your attention to this often neglected but very important
facet of Hadoop.
I'd also like to draw your attention to
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-8039 . In my experience, whenever
I have tried to build the documentation and stage it, the staged files are
replete with broken links. Is your JIRA going to fix this? Perhaps I'm using
the wrong command?

[~andrew.wang] thanks the comments, I addressed all of them

* Home removed
* bylaws, and community menus has been moved. ASF is no longer a menu but I
leave it as a link to the ASF home page. (Also added the logo to the footer).
Privacy policy is moved to the footer
* Pagination on separated archive page has been added.
* Documentation link has been fixed
* Sponsorship was under the Help, the "Who uses Hadoop" section has been added
back to the homepage.

* Regarding the news: I think we have not enogh content to fill up the main
page. So at least for now: I prefer to keep all the lists (Modules, related
projects) on the home page. As a first step I would like to convert the
existing site without too much content modification. But I understand your
concern, and reorganized the news section. With using separated panels and
display the full content of the latest news, it could be more visible now.

( + I totally agree about the getiting started: it could be refreshed,
simplified, or even extend with a docker based simplified version)

This looks great! I think this is something we can commit then iterate on,
thanks for doing the initial work [~elek]!

A few quick points:

* In the top navbar, the "Apache Hadoop" is already a link, do we need the
"Home" link too? Remove "Home" if not?
* Recommend moving the bylaws and committer criteria under "Community", since
they're Hadoop specific (not ASF).
* I think we can remove the ASF navbar links entirely, and have a link to the
main ASF site in the site footer, and somewhere on the landing page.
* Is it possible to display the latest few news stories right on the homepage?
If so, IMO we make it full-width and get rid of "Modules" and move "Related
projects" to a separate page (under "Community"?). "Modules" seems like filler
content and too dev-oriented, we should explain how HDFS/YARN/MR interact in a
more user-oriented way.
* For viewing older news stories, is it possible to paginate so you can view
e.g. 10 per page? Having to click each one to view is a bit unfriendly.
* I looked at http://hadoop.anzix.net/release/2.7.2.html and the Documentation
link is broken (and seems to point to 3.0.0-alpha2).
* We also lost some links from the old website, like "Who uses Hadoop?"
"Sponsorship" etc.

Things to all of us to think about for the future:
* We really should improve our "Learn more" and "Getting started" content, it's
not that user friendly and also jarring now that it links to the release
tarball docs with the old style.
* It'd be good to have some more introductory content (with figures) on the
main page.

Elek, Marton commented on HADOOP-14163:

I created a proposed version of the hadoop.apache.org site:

1. Instead of the patch I packaged all the contents as the whole content under
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/hadoop/common/site/main/author could be
replaced with the content of the hadoop-site.tar.gz.

2. hadoop-site-rendered.tar.gz contains the rendered html files.

3. I used hugo site generator (https://gohugo.io). It's not as popular as for
example jekyll, but it requires only one single binary for rendering. Jekyll
needs installed ruby environment, and the right version of gems.

4. The theme is just plain bootstrap.

5. The content just converted (with pandoc) from html to markdown. Except
http://hadoop.apache.org/version_control.html, which seems to be outdated so I
updated to use the git repository urls.

6. I uploaded a preview version to http://hadoop.anzix.net, to make it easier
to review. It will be removed later.

7. The big advantages of this structure that it's much more easier to add new
releases automatically/with scripts. For a new scripts just a new file should
be created (see this one as an example:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/elek/hadoop-site-proposal/master/content/release/2.7.3.md).
With the hugo command the new site will be generated under the public
directory.
