Is it big differences in specs and looks of the GTA02 and the now available

Evolution - Message Filters

2007-10-23 Thread Jonathon Suggs
Sorry to send this to the whole list, but I figured at least one person
out there is using Evolution. I just (well, still in the progress)
migrated my work desktop from XP to Ubuntu. I was using Thunderbird for
reading this list and had no problems having it move all OM related
email to specific folders. I've been trying several different
combinations of message filters to get it to recognize the OM mail, but
nothing is working and it is starting to become very frustrating.

So, for anyone using Evolution (and sorting OM list mail) please let me
know what you are doing.

-Jonathon

Side note, I was going to use Thunderbird here on Ubuntu, but I thought
that since Evolution was what was going to be used for the Neo I'd go
ahead and get familiar and hopefully have less troubles syncing the two.

Now what I really want to see is a candy bar form factor for an OpenMoko

interested in that form factor to develop for OpenMoko or QTopia and have a

Exact release date of GTA01Bv4?

2007-10-23 Thread Mark
 Hi Community

Hi, welcome!

When is the exact release date of GTA01Bv4? The new Neo phone

Do you mean the GTA02? There is no announcement yet.

And just for my curiosity: how do you define exact release date?

a) the first announcement that you can order
b) the first device did leave the production line
c) the first real shipment has started

He obviously meant GTA02, and just as obviously meant when it will be
possible to order. Anybody that's been following this at all knows
that there's a huge difference between ordering and receiving, but
the earlier one orders, the more likely one will actually receive...

As someone who has been waiting on pins and needles for months for
this phone, I too am wondering why there has not been an announcement
of some kind, since up to now they've been saying October and we're
3/4 of the way through the month. If it's going to be January or
later, that's fine (and that's probably still optimistic, considering
what I've been reading on the lists), but they really should keep us
posted. It's extremely inconsiderate to keep everybody in suspense
like this.

Hello Jonathan,

in den Add Rule window you can filter according to the Recipients is
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then you can move the email in a other folder.

Perhaps a better solution when the above not always works = Filter on

Phone Freaking

All the technology exists to build the super phone of the future, but
the carriers won't do it. You can.

by Clive Thompson

I HAVE THE MOST awe-
some mobile phone.
You wouldn't believe
the sick stuff it can do.
There's a webcam for
videoconferencing,
email, a full browser,
and instant messaging.
I can install whatever
apps I want--Rhap-
sody's music service,
SSH clients, document
and spreadsheet edi-
tors, even software
to access my desk-
top machine remotely.
Oh yeah: It also makes
free voice-over-IP calls.
It cost $400. It incin-
erates the iPhone.
   The only catch: I
had to build it myself.
   My phone is actu-
ally a pimped-out Nokia
N800, a pocket-sized
tablet computer. Tech-
nically, it's not a phone
at all, but because it's
Linux-based and has
built-in Wi-Fi, it can
run tons of great soft-
ware. I loaded Skype,
and presto--voice-call
functionality whenever
I'm near a wireless net-
work, which nowadays
is basically always.
   So why can't your
handset work this way,
too? If the hardware
and software are all
available to make these
incredible do-it-all
phones--how come the
wireless carriers aren't
rolling them out??

Because the wireless mobile industry is
the laziest and least innovative sector of the
entire high tech world, full stop. It's more
interested in preserving its old-school profit
mechanisms than in breaking new ground.
   Cellular-industry critics have been com-
plaining about this for years. As they point
out, phone companies rake in millions by
overcharging for things that cost little to
provide--a buck or two for a ringtone or TV-
show snippet here; a few cents for extra text
messages there. Much like the record labels
with CDs, they're wringing all the money
they can from these old economics.
Only a few high-end smartphones can be
customized with software you select. With
virtually every other phone, you're stuck
with those apps the wireless companies will
permit you to download via their network--
for a tidy fee, of course. Why would they let
you download freeware games when they
can ding you $7 to play a Tetris rehash?
This is also why so few phones have Wi-Fi.
If they did, you'd simply tap into free nodes
instead of suffering through your mobile
carrier's glacially slow data network. It was
a minor miracle that ATT let Apple put Wi-
Fi into the iPhone--though notice they're
certainly not letting anyone install Skype
on it. ATT's creaking, 1980s-era business
model must be protected at all costs, no mat-
ter how much it makes your phone suck.
Wireless executives have many excuses
for their paternalistic behavior. They need to
keep phones locked down, they claim, because
if customers downloaded all sorts of freeware,
it could wreak havoc with their network.
I don't buy it. Indeed, I could disprove it
with a simple hack. Verizon offers a laptop
card for $60 that lets you access unlimited
high-speed data anywhere Verizon covers.
I could rebroadcast that signal via Wi-Fi or
Bluetooth to my N800--and then use Skype
to make phone calls on Verizon's wireless
network. The only thing I'd be hurting is
the bottom line.
It's a kludge, but such a setup shows that
the various components for killer phones--
fast networks, free software, cheap hard-
ware--all exist. The sole obstacle to their
being assembled is the wireless carriers'
desire to protect an antediluvian business
that its consumers loathe.
So, is there hope? The OpenMoko project
is working on an open source, Wi-Fi?enabled
phone that works on any GSM network. That's
pretty cool. In my more feverish dreams,
the government actually grows a pair and
realizes that we, the public, own the air-
waves that the wireless companies so might-
ily abuse--and the FCC simply forces the
carriers to open up their services to true
smartphones. (Google's lobbying for this,
with no success yet.) Or here's an even more
delirious vision: A venture capitalist funds a
next-generation mobile-phone carrier that
blankets the nation in Wi-Fi, then uses that
as a backbone for truly PC-like handsets.
I can dream, I guess. Until then, if you want
a phone of the future like mine, you'll have
to build it yourself.

we can't tell exactly when it will be available for ordering because we

Right now we're pretty happy with the third revision of GTA02 (GTA02v3).

But as to exact dates, we can not predict that.

Everyone from the international media reporting on this seems to have
missed a few key points:
1) The Greenphone is a development platform / tool. It was never
intended as a phone / end
user device. Don't believe me? Check the old press releases from Trolltech.
2) Trolltech only produced 1000 Greenphones, as they said from the
start that they would do.
They have now sold all units, which is a good thing.
3) Trolltech will still support the Greenphones that are out there.
For more, see the Trolltech press release:

Actually, we did upgrade it.

When we first released the Greenphone, it came with Qtopia 4.1.7, The

What didn't get upgraded was the kernel. This is because it is out of

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GTA02

Scroll down to estimated time line.

Oh, yeah, there's a single place in the entire wiki that gives updated
information. It's so reasonable to expect everybody to dig through
the entire site to find it, amid the multitude of places that still
say OCTOBER...

All I'm asking for is the occasional update on the announce list
(what is that list for, anyway, if it's not for exactly this kind of
thing?). There hasn't been a post to that list for a month, and
that was only a request for help on the Web-shop. The last real post
to that list was on August 20, more than two months ago. Do you really
think that's reasonable

If this is the kind of attitude and customer service we can expect
after we buy the thing, I'm not so sure I'm interested anymore...

I gave you the wiki page SPECIFICALLY for the GTA02. You'd think that
would be the most likely place to find information about it. Michael
Shilo (if I spelled his name right) provides updates to the community
list all the time. Pay attention or quit complaining.

Exact release date of GTA02v4?

2007-10-23 Thread Mark
Since no one else has seen fit to make an appropriate post, I'm
pasting this from the one place on the site that has some information:

Estimated time line
* Sep 20 - GTA02v3 design finalized.
* Sep 25 - GTA02v3 serious flaw found, GTA02v4 needed.
* Oct 15 - GTA02v4 design finalized.
* Oct 30 - GTA02v4 design produced, and shipped to qualified developers.
* Nov 20 - GTA02v4 design verified through testing by developers.
* Dec 10 - GTA02v4 produced in moderate volume
* Dec 20 - GTA02v4 goes on sale
* Dec 25 - GTA02v4 arrives. See Santa's Sleigh Package Service.

However, I suggest everyone take this with a grain of salt and not
expect anything until well after the New Year.

Exact release date of GTA01Bv4??

Uh, no, who really cares what the revision of the the thing is? No
consumer does. The most logical place to disseminate projected release
information is on the Announce list. What part of Announce do you
not understand?

The non-developers who want these only want to know when _a_ (as in
any) version is going to go on sale to the general public. They also
are not going to feel like (or in many cases be capable of) digging
through the entire site to find the one place where updated
information is available, nor are they going to understand how a wiki
works. They are going to assume (reasonably) that the pages that
describe the minutiae of the hardware are static. An email list they
can understand.

...and, I HAVE been paying attention.

To quote Michael Shiloh:
You are partially correct, we are aiming for November, but the truth is
we can't tell exactly when it will be available for ordering because we
don't know what unexpected surprises we'll run in to.

Right now we're pretty happy with the third revision of GTA02 (GTA02v3).
We started the forth revision already and we should be our first units
of GTA02v4 so that we can start evaluating them any day now.

But as to exact dates, we can not predict that.

... which was only posted today, after the question had been asked,
and he never made any other posts that in the least bit addressed
dates until yesterday. And even this post is extremely vague.

I have been scouring the site all along, but the last time I checked
http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GTA02 that timeline information was NOT
there. Apparently I've been paying a lot more attention than you...

Considering that the alternative is for someone *else* to dig through
the site and report the same answer to you, yes, actually, it does
sound pretty reasonable for you to dig through the site yourself! :')

Re: Exact release date of GTA01Bv4?

2007-10-23 Thread Eric Johnson
It seems some community responsibility is in order. Being an open source
project, it's important that positive and respectful lines of communication
remain open. Those members who are close to the metal, so to speak, have
an obligation to send proper communications out via the lists (or
otherwise). Those members who are highly interested in project events and
status have an obligation to remain as educated as possible and have a
responsibility to fix any inconsistencies on the Wiki they find. By its
very nature, a Wiki is only as good as the community supporting it. As
well, the Wiki is, in fact, versioned, so rolling erroneous entries back is
trivial.
